My wifes car is a 11 cruze with a 1.4 turbo. So far from the dealership, 2 new turbos, new turbo oil feed line and a bunch of other parts. All while under warranty.

Now it has 120k and so far its has had

New starter (expected)
New battery (expected)
New intake manifold after the plastic nipples cracked
New evaporator after some codes thrown
Head skimmed after broken return line (this return line has been replaced 4 times. Once by dealer and 3 times by me.they just seem to rot away at the plug
Turbo return line broke, new head gasket again and new head
New water pump
New thermostat
New water inlet housing
New front main seal since it was opened up
All new rubber
New coolant reservoir
New ignition
New plugs
2 sets of new head bolts
2 new main crakshaft pully bolt
New turbo oil feed pipe

Now for the second head job. Get it back together, after a few beers. Forget that the oil plug isnt tight. And have a broken turbo oil feed pipe and all my oil pissed out, then the return hose after the thermostat pops off and coolant everywhere and its starting to get up there in temp. 240* and i shut it off. Refill the coolant and bleed it, new oil.

Starts right up. No over heat. Drive a few miles at 25mph no issues.

Get back and see check engine light on, look up codes. P0016 and P0017.

I am hoping that they are due to no oil but am afraid my chain jumped a tooth. The car runs fine and starts fine.

This car was supposed to go to my oldest but am afraid to let her drive it while she is away at school. I dont want her to get stuck.

A lousy vehicle I admit.

But there is a heck of a lot of competition for worst car ever made.

I mean, take a look at this.

I have an 11 cruze.  Non turbo.  Zero problems. Not a cruze or chevy fan boy I only bought it because I drive 150 miles per day for work and I got a good deal on it.

Now my Chevy Traverse is an absolute pile of garbage.

Go buy a "lifetime warranty" Dodge second hand.  You'll learn all about shitty vehicles.

I like GM but even I wouldn't buy their cars or SUVs.

I drive a Subaru Imprezza I bought new in 2015. Almost 4 years, only 40k miles but nothing but routine service items. It was 20k new.

I reckon you've never had a 2002 F-350, 7.3 Powerstroke.

OP, With the money I've put into my '02 F-350, 7.3 Powerjoke for repairs over the past 17 years
I could have bought many Chevy Cruze's.

Your complaint is lame and you should feel bad.

My Fiance's 2012 cruze hasn't been that bad; I did have to fix the stupid plastic thermostat housing, and the coolant reservoir that had a plastic pipe bung (upgraded to one with metal reinforcing); and early on Chevy had to replace the water pump that they put a rubber plug in and it started leaking quickly.

Other than that, basic maintenance such as battery, brakes and tires, oil etc which I do all myself. Sometimes the dealership says you need a bunch of shit done, when it's actually something much simpler and you end up with a LOT more issues. The turbo on her car is in great shape, it's been on synthetic since 30,000 miles and there is very little shaft play at 115,000 miles.

We came real close to buying one of those in 2012, probably would have been a 2013 model.  We stopped by the Ram dealer first to see what deal we could get for a truck and it was so good we got that instead.  Our plan was if the deal was not good for trading a 2005 Durango for the truck, we would go buy the Cruze with no trade as we need a 4X4 that can tow a water tank on a trailer.  The truck was a far better vehicle for us.

Yeah, try a 2001 Honda Civic; my Mom has has this thing for 18 years and just the other day a TPMS sensor broke!

What kind of BS is that !

Nothing else has gone wrong in 18 years - but I'm so pissed about her having to pay $89 in unscheduled maintenance in 18 years!  POS!

Wow, that does sound like a complete POS.

I have a 2010 Equinox for daily driver with the 2.4 LAF engine.  About 185K or so on it.

So far, outside of oil and filter:

One battery. - Maintenance.

Couple sets of plugs. - Maintenance.

Set of Coil-On-Plugs. - Maintenance.

One throttle body.  The motor in it died so it went into 15mph limp mode.  About 200 bucks IIRC.

A few brake jobs.  Maintenance.

That's it.  Overall I've been quite pleased with the Equinox and replacing with another new Equinox is a distinct possibility.

ETA:  Forgot about the transmission which died shortly after getting a fluid replacement (maintenance schedule).  It was replaced free of charge though at about 120-130K.

P0016, P0017 after head work means you got it out of time.

And Cruzes are really bad. I love them, they are easy to work on and they are always broke. But I work in a Chevy dealership.

Ah, I might have gotten a wire crossed on that.

All I know is that the Norks made a Mercedes knockoff that was exported to China and a few neighboring countries that was of shockingly low quality.

Though I suppose in terms of notoriety the products of British Leyland are hard to beat.

My former neighbor has one.

-Crappy oil drain plug that is easily stripped and far under-sized
-Has also had to replace a turbo
-Onslaught of radiator problems, including cracking of cheap plastic parts
-Who designs oil filters to be horizontally mounted?

Not a car I would recommend to a friend. I'm not sure about the new style, but I know for a fact his 2013 is a pile

@CSAkuklos

Do i have to take it all apart again to adjust timing? Or can i do it from the top of the head with just taking off the valve cover?

Oh and that valve cover was replaced due to some vacuum valve or something that is built into the cover.

Gm just sucks. Atleast the cruze is easy to work on. I’ve done 2 timing chain sets on gm suvs. A terrain with 70k miles and a buick enclave. 1800 dollar job. All because of a crappy pcv system.

Anyone from back in the day remember that guy who assembled Chevy Cruze vehicles at the plant somewhere and was constantly here in GD posting about how the Cruze was going to single handedly save GM in the car market.

There was a period where that dude would not shut up about how great the cruze was going be and how it would replace Toyota in dependability. The rest of us just kept saying "dude, it's a low end Chevy... It's more likely to be a POS than anything else, please stop."

Maybe we can find that guy and you can discuss your customer experience with him?

The chevy equinox is the cruze's older brother who also has down syndrome.

I have heard that recent chevy trucks are very competitive but god have mercy on the soul of anyone who buys a sedan/crossover from that garbage brand.

No clue about the WRX.
One thing to think about with all-wheel-drive:
You can’t replace one tire, or 2 tires (nobody will do it).  All tires have to be the same and within so much tread wear or nobody will touch it without replacing them all.  Pain in the ass.
Only way around that is to leave the car on blocks at home and bring the rim to the shop.

Another annoyance I found was the CVT fluid.  Granted, you may never have to change it (I don’t know?), but if you “accidentally” pulled the wrong drain plug under the car while changing your oil, you’re fucked.  Nobody sells the “special CVT fluid” except for a Subaru dealership and the only way to get it back in is with a pump.
