Thought this was an interesting article.  The Chinese never seem to slow down.

China has launched its largest and most impressive aircraft carrier to date. The Type-003 carrier rivals U.S. Navy carriers in size, the first non-American carrier to do so.

10 years after China commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the Type-003 Fujian will further expand and mature the Chinese Navy’s capabilities. It is part of a shift to a true blue water navy, operating in the Pacific and, if called upon, globally.

The Type-003 is comparable in size to the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz and Ford classes. And it’s design is similar in many ways.

By coming late to the game, Chinese designers benefit from decades of research and development by others. Bypassing intermediate steps, the new carrier incorporates much of the latest thinking.

Like the U.S. Navy’s Ford class carrier, the catapults will be EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System). This uses electricity instead of traditional steam, which should confers some advantages. The system takes up less room and should be able to launch aircraft at a higher rate.

In recent months the first carrier Liaoning was operating in the open waters of the Western Pacific. Japanese defense officials noted that over 100 aircraft launches were undertaken. This shows a significant operational tempo.

Of course it’s of ‘similar design’ to our  carriers.

Our politicians have been giving China military and industrial secrets for 30 years or more.

A decade ago Many on arfcom assured me that China would never have a blue water navy capable of doing carrier operations.

It's scary how quickly they advance by stealing technology.

Cool, makes it easier for us to sink.

That is, if it doesn't turn into a submarine on its own.

What's the power source? Every article I can find lists it as "probably conventional."
Does that mean fuel oil, or what? Is that a range limiter?

BS, it doesn't " compare" to our stuff, the ship or the aircraft it carries.

It would be interesting to have an "EMALS" expert who knows the details of the Ford system, be able to see the Chinese system and see if it's pretty much a direct copy.

Yes, either boilers with steam turbines or gas turbines or a combo drive system.

Range limit compared to our nukes but China will be fighting much closer to home than we will

That one (Type-003) is an oil burner.  Their next one (Type-004) is nuclear.

Yep. Looks like ours.

When I was in Thailand I took a speedboat ferry between islands one time. As the boat approached it looked like the old Cobalt (a really nice boat) my mom used to own.

When I boarded, I saw that it wasn't nearly as nice as the worst Bayliner (a budget boat) ever to hit the water. Point being, what it looks like from a distance and how it's built on the inside are two radically different things, sometimes, and I hope this is one of those times.

For the people going on about how many we have v theirs, ask how many we have in theater now v what they will have in a few years. Modern war won't be what you have across the earth that will take months to arrive, but what you have there immediately at the time of crisis. Conflict won't last long enough to mobilize and reallocate from other theaters.

It's not just a carrier question either. Look at their cruisers and destroyers (that are all in 1 place) v what we have. Then look at the trend over the next few years. It's not good and getting measurably worse.

The real story is the trend line. It's not in our favor.

Shipbuilding and ship repair is an advantage for China which is why I’m so fixated on the S-500. Dies it actually work? If so China could prevent us from damaging those facilities.

Some here think that the invasion of Ukraine and thousands of murders isn't any of our business, and supporting Ukraine is a waste of taxpayers money.  They probably say the same thing about Taiwan.  Maybe this will wake some of them up.
