After shooting my buddy’s 1301 tactical I ordered one off gunbroker

I haven’t touched my Benelli since

A 1301 or similar with an extended mag is lot of ‘fuck you’ in close quarters.
A supplement to the guys with AR’s or whatever, but a useful tool I’d think.

Federal discontinued 8 pellet which was more common on the civilian side due to tighter groups.

Only 9 pellet now which kinda sucks. 8 pellet was 4x4 with buffering material, the 9 pellet isn't as tight.

That reminds me. I need to clean my 930 from the back to back classes I took with it. It wasn’t running so good towards the end of the 2nd class.

I want a 590 as well, op. And an A300. And a 1301.

In full disclosure I wouldn’t mind a 1301 as well.

And don’t mistake me. For 8 rounds the shotgun is a monster with a reliable semi-auto.

I like shotguns but they have their place. Outside of shooting flying targets and home defense I think a carbine is the better tool. They do mostly fly under the gun grabbers radar which is nice.

I don't see a reason to get a pump action today as an established adult.

The Wingmasters aren't nearly the hand polished guns they used to be, and the 590 is a meme with a terrible safety location. Of course, you could always go with the ever terrible Nova.

1301 or M4 or go home. I'll probably grab a 1301, I just can't keep ignoring it and my S12 keeps breaking. It's cool I can hold 20 but random parts just keep breaking, to include the dust cover.

Sometimes in the gun community there's no levels. Like not great, good, great and optimal.

Shotguns are somewhere between good and great because they do a lot of things well. Your not going to be reloading in a self defense/home defense situation.

We often act like the optimal SHTF/WROL/GTW gun is the only gun for self/home defense.

When in reality the gun someone is really good with is the right gun. So long as the caliber is adequate.

So starting from scratch with guns and skills yeah get an AR. Have 2k rounds through a pump shotgun and getting talked into your first AR? Not an enthusiest/hobby shooter? Buy more shotgun ammo.

There was a time when I was much better with a shogun at what shotguns can do than I was with an AR. I would have been fine sticking with a shotgun between the time of being good with a shotgun and getting good with an AR.

Lets see.  I have 8 rounds in the 12ga. magazine, 9 00 buckshot per shell.   I can put 72 projectiles in the air before you can.   While you are reloading 2 more 30 rnd [rnags  in your ar and fire a total of 72 rnds I have already reloaded 8 more rnds and fired another 72 projectiles.
My house is at it's longest distance is 75 ft.   I can cover center mass from the top of the head to the belt buckle.  A door way at 7 yds will allow the 00buck to expand to cover the chest or head.
At 25 yds my shot will shatter my patio doors, however no shot will leave my property so injuring my neighbors is not a problem.

I keep my shot gun.

I've been having the same thoughts myself lately about my shotguns. I have a Stevens 620a because it is old, slam fires and looks cool. I have a Mossberg 590A1 wearing Magpul furniture for "home defense" and a Mossberg 835 for hunting.

I'm thinking about selling everything except for the 835 because the other two are really only good for buckshot. My small framed wife can't shoot them, rather she won't because it hurts her. The 620a and the 590A1 are both cylinder bore without chokes so you can't hunt birds with it.

In fact, I had a firmer friend that wanted me to shoot the pest birds on his property, I used the 590A1 and couldn't figure out why I was missing birds all the time. Then I stuck a Monster can on top of a stick and unloaded a full tube of shells into it and not a single pellet hit. The shot spread at 30 to 50 yards was literally making bird sized holes that no pellets would hit.

I changed out my shotgun to one with chokes and started dropping birds left and right. So for those thinking that you can hunt birds with a cylinder bore, you're more likely to waste shells than you are to hit anything.

So my combat shotguns don't do anything that my hunting shotgun, pistols or rifles can't do better. They look cool and are scary but I would rather have just about any other modern semi-auto gun if I had to fight with it.

Being second best isn't stupid.  Some of us shoot shotguns better than ARs, though shooting birds isn't directly comparable to combat shooting.  The older I get, the more I prefer my carbine over my shotgun.  Still I have kept the Benelli, and trust it.

Got complimented by Bill Jeans while running a pump during a several day Morrigan Consulting LE Shotgun Instructor course.

The things have a purpose but to deploy them well takes training and practice.

Otherwise they are typically a fucking club in only 5-7 rounds.

Rather have an AR in many situations.

Killed plenty of small furry critters with both shotgun and AR alike.

/edit

About the only thing I like about a shotgun is the idea of a Forster/Breneke slug removing roughly 1 1/2 inches of spine out of a criminal rendering their legs all floppy like Joel Swanson on Family Guy.   If the guy lives let him drag himself out of the house and crawl out to the gutter to die.

A shotgun is good for a self defense situation where you are facing a limited number of attackers, at short range (but not too short because shotguns are long), and are not wearing body armor. In that situation I'd say they are equal to or perhaps superior to a rifle. In every other situation...nope.

The problem is, in the very limited number of situation in which a shotgun shines, a carbine is still better, and not just marginally, and I say this as a shotgun lover.

The only time a shotgun outperforms an AR is hitting flying targets within 75, maybe 80 yards and being able to get a beater off the pawn shop floor for under 2 bills.

I like martial shotguns but would never recommend one to someone else.

User induced malfunctions, catastrophic compared to rifles, low capacity, crappy balance compared to rifles, not ergonomic, not as easily user configured, adjusted, or repaired.

The only two reasons to own one are; you want a specific loading for a specific martial purpose, you live somewhere where you can't own a full on rifle.

But I've never not had fun shooting one, and I've never gotten my panties in a twist over a bad group with one either.

combat shotguns, yea, I'd agree with the OP.
However everyday run of the mill shotgun made for hunting has more uses that an AR.
The list of what you can hunt with it is long and varied while an AR is short.

So instead of sitting in the basement waiting for SHTF with your AR get a good hunting shotgun and go hunting, shoot some sporting clays its all a lot more fun.

Shot is capable of going further than you think it will. Your idea of it not being able to leave your property is false. At a mear
27 degrees, #8 shot can travel ABOUT 230 yards. 00 buckshot ABOUT 66o yards, and a 12 g slug ABOUT 1200 yards.

Took my son shooting. AR, Ak, c93.  I had alot of cases of bird shot i used to buy for doves and skeet.  Blasted at the end with a 870 police magnum and laughed the whole time.  Blowing stuff up in the air watching clumps of grass launching up in the air.  I enjoy shooting shotguns.

I like like shotguns, I have several. But they have their drawbacks.

Body armor has become common. I prefer a firearm with the ability to defeat some common body armor.

They are heavy. Holding someone at gunpoint until the police arrive sucks. It really sucks when you are using a shotgun with an extended mag, flashlight and side saddle.

The best semi automatic shotguns are expensive. $1,300 to $1,800. A lot more expensive than an AR.

A shotgun is much faster at dropping bad guys.

You don't need a 30 Rd mag if you only need one shot per bad guy.

Under certain situations an HD shtgun can be very effective at stopping a threat.

But I can't argue with lots of recoil, slow to reload, and smaller capacity.
