I stopped a guy the other day for a minor equipment violation, brake light out.  Explained to the gentleman why I stopped him and per policy I couldn't simply release him with a verbal warning, that I would have to write him a written warning.

Well after I got finished and handed him his warning, I politely asked him where he was going.  He politely told me he didn't wish to answer any questions and asked if he was free to leave. I told him yes, and watched as he made a left turn onto a road that's about 15 miles long on an island with no side streets that was closed at the 14mile point because of a bad accident Troopers were working.

Could have saved the guy 30 minutes as well as some gas.  All well

So he exercised his rights, and you were a dick to him. Awesome.

where was he a dick to him?

By not reading his mind and warning him, obviously.

Wait.  Is mind reading a violation of his rights?

So far I have yet to be shown how taping someone in full public view obstructs them from doing anything. It aint physics and you aint Heisenberg

If it's anything like the idiots on Worldstar it'll be some schmuck hovering six feet away getting the iPhone as clode to the cop's ear as they can.

THAT is obstructing. The guy across the street isn't doing anything wrong.

So...   There is a proximity limit to our Constitutional rights...  arbitrarily set by whom?  You?

Here's the thing...  when things start going bad societally, Police who have lost their true purpose will be the first ones to be turned on by the masses.

Yep. My father is former LEO and told the sheriff just that a few months ago. A friendly 'be sure youre on the right side' reminder.

My patrol car video system records video at two sources and audio at three sources as well as lighting, braking, speed and location. My patrol area has city owned cameras at most major intersections.  I've had the Lt comment after that fact that he was watching me on live video as an event unfolded.  Im used to and expect to be recorded. Someone else wants to record me thats fine, why should I even care?

Taping in and of itself doesn't obstruct them, and no one says it does. However, as my example above explains, video taping does not allow you to do other stuff that does interfere. Its the other stuff that is the obstruction and interference. Claiming "I was just recording the cop", does not mean you get to do other stuff that IS interference.

Yup, there are folks that figure that since they are video taping the cops, that gives them the green light to do things that does interfere with the cops. When the cops arrest the guy recording them for interference, the claim "all I was doing was recording them" is made. Oddly enough, the video shows different.

There have been several examples we have seen posted here where the video recorder claimed "all I was doing was recording the cop", when the video clearly shows them doing something else as well.  I think the incident last month when the guy in LA (?) got his dog shot when he started blasting loud music at an incident where the cops had an armed robber surrounded. The initial claim was that the guy was arrested, and his dog shot, just for taping the cops. When the rest of the story came out, he specifically harassing the cops and interfering, and refused their requests to "turn it down already". Other folks quietly recording the scene weren't even approached by the cops.

Smartphones haven't been around that long either. Back in the '80s I don't remember one single person whipping out a video camera or still camera on a stop or other interaction. No audio recording either, although it would have been interesting to see someone haul out an old reel to reel to record me.

Criminals are happy that LE resources are diverted to deal with video trolls so they can victimize people with impunity.  Good job, cop blockers!

"Take my phone, I don't care. The video is already gone to the cloud along with your career, asshole."

Rarely does it work that way.

I really don't see why the fools believe that, it's never happened in my almost 30 years of LE experience.

So in the almost 30 years you've been a cop, not one smartphone uploaded content to the cloud? Not one? Not in 30 years?

Reminds me of this movie, dumb, dumber and dumb as fuck.

I think he meant the career ending part of that quote.

That would be a waste of text. Everyone knows the only grounds for firing a cop in Austin is slapping a woman strapped to an ambulance gurney.

In your dreams.

Police officers approach prima donnas like this like most people approach stepping in dog crap.  Annoying, but not important in the scheme of things.

Incorrect.  She was fired for lying about it.   She was PROSECUTED AFTER she was fired.

This is true. There are so many videos posted and page after page after page of comments about how someone got something over on "the man", where the cop just thinks "asshole" and goes about his business.

Most of the videos I see recently are more cop baiting than anything useful. No points get made to anyone other than the people who are already anti cop. No points get made to the cops- they just see someone trying to make their job more difficult. These videos accomplish nothing.
There are many many more good cops than bad, but there are bad cops- ask any cop if he knows some.
There are people making videos than do make a point, but most are just annoying. They do nothing other than make noise.

Wait.

YOU of all people are accusing someone of being an internet badass?

Is it just "contempt of cop" when someone who is stopped for something petty, like jay walking, decides to assault the cop rather than produce ID?

Is it just "contempt of cop" when someone follows a police car around video taping them, and then throws a fit when the cop asks them what they are doing?

Taping in and of itself doesn't obstruct them, and no one says it does. However, as my example above explains, video taping does not allow you to do other stuff that does interfere. Its the other stuff that is the obstruction and interference. Claiming "I was just recording the cop", does not mean you get to do other stuff that IS interference.

I'm videotaping, so I can obstruct and distract you, and encourage the guy being arrested to "kick your ass", and block traffic, and push officers off the guy being arrested.

Right?

So far I have yet to be shown how taping someone in full public view obstructs them from doing anything. It aint physics and you aint Heisenberg

the TX law for obstructing states that it must involve actual, physical, obstructing.  also, anything involving only speech is not obstruction

You may want to look that up.  I can point to several court cases  that involve  verbal only.  It's not Obstructing BTW>

All well

So, you are an ......  If you were a considerate guy, you would have volunteered that info to him, saved him hassle and save congestion at the accident scene.  But since he disrespected your authority by reasonably assuming you, were justjust going fishing or flexing your badge which is what cops are doing 99.99999% of the time when they askwhere you are going, you kept that helpful info to yourself.

Google  "copblock"   it's a  techinique they hold seminars to train for.   Just scumbags hoping for a payday.

He didn't know the guy was going down that road until after the guy left. What did you want him to do- chase him down and stop him?
