My girlfriend  has a 9 year old Hyundai Tiburon with 30,000 miles on it.  The paint is going bad, and I suggested that she look into getting it repainted since it has such low miles.  Two different shops in our area quoted 4,000 to 5,000 for a decent paint job.  Seriously?

When did prices for getting a car painted go so sky high?

Does that sound right to you guys?

New paints aren't cheap. Neither is the clear-coat.

Shooting a car used to be a lot less involved.

I just got a quote (from a non-Maaco type auto paint shop) to have just the tailgate on my F150 painted for $500.

A good paint job is worth way more than a 9 year old Hyundai.

If she insists on getting it painted, she needs to do the prep work herself. Strip it, prime it, mask it. Drive it to the shop and get a cheap spray.

Otherwise just get it dipped. Or leave as-is, sell it and buy something worthwhile.

That Hyundai isn't worth the quote for new paint.

Painting a vehicle isn't cheap that is for sure.  My wholesale guy at our dealership said minimum would be $2k...unless you went really cheap with MAACO.

MAACO used to offer the $99 special.

Checked it out once.

The special only applied to "special" colors.  They had a choice of 5.  Iirc, they had: baby blue, tan, baby-puke green, etc.

I passed.

The prices have creeped up rapidly in a market full of bullshit artists and people PAY becaue their skillset has dwindled so far that they think they have no choice. $1200.00-1500.00 just for materials alone.

Plastic bumpers, fender vents, door handles, exterior mirrors, rear spoiler, lower rocker mouldings are all body color. You are wanting them painted as well, correct? All of that has to be disassembled and reassembled. Quarter panel glasses have mouldings that contact the painted surfaces. Some cannot be pulled back and the glass has to be removed for painting unless you want a crap job that depreciates the value of your car. Labor to disassemble and reassemble 20 hours. Labor to prep and refinish if the current finish is in good enough condition to support a new base/clear urethane finish 40 hours minimum. Door dings? Chalky peeling clear? Front bumper have a million divits and bug marks from getting blasted on the highway? All extra. Color change on a unibody car? Forget about that, total disassembly of vehicle required.

So, a minimum of 60 hours labor at $58.00 per hour, $3480.00 plus 1500.00 materials is $4980.00 plus tax and any clips , fasteners or required parts. Minimum 5 grand. My advise would be to sell or trade the car along with the additional 5 grand and get a nicer, newer car.

And how many hours did all that take?

Repainting a car is a manual labor project - not sure it could be automated to reduce/eliminate the human labor costs.  Body work and painting are skills that most people have never needed - just not stuff that most folks undertake unless they are true car people doing multiple vehicles.

Fucking PAINT has changed in our lifetime (I'm 46) - some for the better, some not so much.

I did my Scout for about $600 in materials.  Was a good learning experience.  I'd do it again.

For a 10 year old Hyundai, I'd take it to Maaco and call it good.

There are too many variables, but that price could be low or high. GOOD paint is not cheap, and even the color affects its price. Single stage? Clear coat? How much sanding and how much body work? All these things matter.

Prep work takes time............ lots of it.  Time that they'd rather spend making gravy on insurance crash work.

Anything that is getting painted needs to be scuffed at the very least or it's going to peel in those areas.

Most body shops around my area don't want anything to do with anything other than insurance work, it's like a license to steal.  Customer pay jobs always take a backseat and wait and wait and wait........

I have had two cars painted.

One for $1300  (small shop - one man operation) and one for $289  (Maaco).

On the Maaco job - they told me - look, we shoot it one color, no base/clear, and will look ok.  They took a pen and marked all the places on my car that need work.  He explained they wont fill/blend/feather ANY of that stuff for $289 - they simply wet sand the whole car, dry, mask, and shoot.

I did some of the prep myself, they did the rest.  Sure, it had plenty of orange peel, and I could find all sorts of defects in it.... but it looked PERFECT from 30 feet.

The $1300 job was better.  I had to look harder for the defects, but I could still find them.  Places where it wasn't filled and sanded enough, or showing sand marks where it needed to be smoother out more with a finer grit, etc.  Plus the occasional piece of dust under the paint raising a small spot you can feel and see.

To do a quality base/clear, with all prep work, multiple coats, and then block sand out the orange peel.... and removal and reinstallation of emblems, lights, panels where necessary,  I can absolutely see that being $5000.  I could easily see 10-15 % of that being materials alone.

A quality paint job in this area starts at 2K, that is going to get you similar to the quality of factory paint on a US or Japanese car. You can get a $500 job at Maaco, Peach or Economy, but it will be fading and peeling in a year or two.

A really nice paint job is going to be 5K and up, you don't have to spend that much on a daily driver, but much less than 2K and before long you are going to be disappointed.

Prices can and will vary by market. I would expect to pay more in NYC, and less in Los Angeles, Florida has a lot of old wealthy people who like shiny shit, so expect it to be more.

Doing paint right, takes time. Time = money. If she wants to keep the car, I would suggest that she put a wrap on it. If it was a rare car or limited edition performance car, then I could see spending the money to have it painted. For a Hyundai? Go cheaper.

The paint job will exceed the blue book value.
What's wrong with the paint anyway? Can you get some close up pics of the defect?
Is the whole car flat when it should be gloss?
Is the clear coat delaminating?
Do you see rust?
Are there dents/dings?
Will you be doing a color change? If so you'll be painting underhood, in door jambs etc.

A higher end job will require all trim to be removed, then reinstalled. Bumper covers are removed, painted, then reinstalled; emblems are removed and reinstalled. Some low end shops will charge a lot less, and do a lot less. I suggest finding a lower end shop, or doing it yourself.

It depends on where you live. Some counties require you to use waterborne basecoat and low VOC clearcoat. Others just require lower VOC. EPA doesn't approve booths to my knowledge, but each jurisdiction may not like it. VOCs leak out of the paint booth even when it's on. The booth captures lint and dust on air entering the booth with tacky air filters so it won't ruin your paint job.  Then it filters out the overspray so you don't have all those solids going everywhere. The gas/VOCs however evaporates and enters the atmosphere.

If you think they are making all kinds of money then by all means you should open up your own shop and put them out of business. It has to be that easy right?

There's no insurance issues, health standards to meet and disposal regulations to meet. Just spray it out in the yard with no mask and dump the extra down the storm drain when you are done. Good enough.

OP I painted my motorcycle a couple years ago. I work at a car dealership with a body shop so I got all my stuff at cost. I went with a yellow bc that's what color my bike was. The paint was $90 a pint. A PINT. I did a half fairing motorcycle and just the materials were almost $400.

Paint shops have tons of regulations they have to meet and tons of overhead. People that have been out of the marketplace for even 5 years have no idea how much things have gone up. Your estimate to do a whole car doesn't sound out of the ballpark for a whole car. I have seen rear bumpers that don't even look that bad cost over $1500 to fix .

For a nice job that is very reasonable, OP.

When folks call my shop for an "all-over" I tell them before they come it will start around $5500-$6000 and increase from there.

Never mind that the guy who repairs your has $20k invested in his tools to do the job correctly.  Or that the cost of liquids and dry products he uses increase 8-10% per year, every year.  Or that a guy like you expects show car quality, and at least a 5 year warranty.  That just the disassembly and organization is a day and half...reassembly two days.  Nib/buff/clean is a full day.  There is nearly 5 days and we haven't even started repairing anything...But hey, as you said, "Its fucking PAINT" right?

The $1300 job was better.  I had to look harder for the defects, but I could still find them.  Places where it wasn't filled and sanded enough, or showing sand marks where it needed to be smoother out more with a finer grit, etc.  Plus the occasional piece of dust under the paint raising a small spot you can feel and see.

To do a quality base/clear, with all prep work, multiple coats, and then block sand out the orange peel.... and removal and reinstallation of emblems, lights, panels where necessary,  I can absolutely see that being $5000.  I could easily see 10-15 % of that being materials alone.

Good, fast or cheap - pick two.

Not on auto paint.  Pick one.

ETA - well you can have fast and cheap.  Just not good and cheap or good and fast.

I recently asked a shop that I trust what it would cost to change the color and repaint my Dodge Dakota.  I always seem to get a friends and family discount  and was quoted $2,500 plus any extra time for body damage repair.  That's for a color change.  Keeping the existing color would obviously be much cheaper.

Right now I'm fighting off the rust in the rear wheel wells using Duplicolor automotive spray paint.  It matches very close to the factory paint and you have to be within 10 feet or so to even tell.  I'm ok with that.

I'm 52 and it amazes me to see the bland acceptance of the hyperinflation in automotive paint jobs. Just goddamned ridiculous. It's fucking PAINT. and they treat it like a magic elixir. EPA, labor, materials, NONE of it justfies $10k+ for a paint job. But fools pay it.  It's akin to worthless liberat arts gender studies degrees going for $200k+. The prices have creeped up rapidly in a market full of bullshit artists and people PAY becaue their skillset has dwindled so far that they think they have no choice. And in various markets the government tries to ensure they don't.

And yes, I've done my own bodywork, prep and paint. Can't legally in CA now, but fuck those socialist tyrant bastards anyway.

I paint cars for a living.  I deal with idiots like RichNoman all the fucking time.  Assholes like him bring their busted shitboxes in for repairs and always expect something for nothing and bitch about the cost.  It's not "just paint," dickhead.  I've got years of training and experience, thousands in tools, and EPA regs to follow so I don't get fined.  You want a cheap paint job then do it yourself or go to Maaco.  Either way, it'll look like shit and then you can go to a professional and have it done correctly.

I didn't care about jams or anything b/c its just a work truck, but there really isn't a better option for the money.
You sure the before and after tags are right?

Less in L.A.? In Southern California?

Ever heard of CARB or AQMD.......................................
