Touche on the cheap part

Fast is relative - throwing bodies at it to do things in parallel will help but there is only so much that can be done to minimize the overall time line.

Go to some auto detailing sites. There are a lot of really good products that dealers use to bring paint "back from the dead."

You might be able to bring it back to a nice look without painting.

Just sayin'

A decent paint job costs. $5K isn't unusual at all.

You can't just mask the car off and spray it, well you can, some places do, but you don't get factory results that way.

My girlfriend  has a 9 year old Hyundai Tiburon with 30,000 miles on it.  The paint is going bad, and I suggested that she look into getting it repainted since it has such low miles.  Two different shops in our area quoted 4,000 to 5,000 for a decent paint job.  Seriously?

When did prices for getting a car painted go so sky high?

Does that sound right to you guys?

that is the cheap part, price out a EPA legal spray booth.  OH, and deal with the waste as well.

Yep. Spokane PD changed their cars from white to black and white. They went cheap and wrapped the black instead of painting. 2 years later, most of the units have leprosy.

We used to say that a case of beer and a good stereo also required equipment. Last car I painted (assisted) was my Coastie neighbor's 81 Caprice. Dirty job was accomplished in his front yard with two gallos of discounted mismatch paint mixed in a trash can. 27 years ago. Good times! Actually didn't look too bad.

Seems like most body shops don't even bother painting in a booth. I took my wives one year old impala in to get the bumper painted at a dealer- told them make it right whatever it takes.
Shit looked like orange peel and dust. MOST body shops don't give a shit.  You're better off doing a vinyl wrap on the car.
Even the local 'high end' shop quoted me $6K for a final seal/sand/shoot if I bring the car in stripped and ready to go. I told them I wanted a dust free, mirror like job like the last time the car was painted in the 80's and they said they couldn't guarantee it even at $6K. Been looking for a shop to paint the hood on my car and NOT ONE will guarantee a dust free, error free decent job.
Fuck body shops- all the "car guys" have retired and now its just swapping bumpers for people who don't give a shit for insurance money.
Damn, if I knew this would be a rant I would have used more profanity.

Get a vinyl wrap instead.

A good part of that reason is we don't make money on complete paint jobs.  Insurance work can be done faster and we book more hours. I don't wanna do repaints, motorcycles, custom shit, because it takes too long and I don't make as much doing it.

Regarding the MAACO $99 jobs they used to offer:

-they paint right the fuck over name plates, badges, window trim, etc.

For that price it's a miracle they didn't paint over the headlights, tires and windshield.

I hung around with a guy that did full blown custom paint jobs for show vehicles. It's very meticulous work if it's done right. I helped him prep a few vehicles that ended up in magazines and DVDs. I loved the work but our schedules weren't the same and I haven't seen him for years. I have what was at one time a show truck project and for a single color repaint of the same color he quoted me around $4k. That was with the friend discount and with me doing some of the prep work.

Depending on how good you are at block and detail sanding, you could do it yourself.

I have a friend that painted an old jaguar with rust oleum. He took off all the trim, had the paint tinted to match his car color, taped up the windows, and went to town with a roller and a detail brush. After he finished sanding, buffing and polishing it, and touching up some low spots, it was so perfect and shiny you could read the newspaper in the reflection. Materials cost him about $150.

Lol. Some dickhead brought in a car that he 'painted' with a roller when I was in body shop school. Wanted us to strip it and paint it right.   Keep in mind that it was a tech school, so I was pretty much paying money so I could go work for free. The instructor laughed him out of the parking lot.

Come to find out the real dickhead was the instructor himself. Fucker had us strip his corvette which was resprayed every course for the last 5 years. It was like literally sanding through a Fuckin rainbow. Damn that guy loved some shitty colors.

Painting a vehicle isn't cheap that is for sure.  My wholesale guy at our dealership said minimum would be $2k...unless you went really cheap with MAACO.

might as well grab a roller and a five of house paint if you're going with MAACO

Self leveling tractor paint, a roller and wet sanding acutally turns out sort of decent.

So everything in your shop had a kind of red tint to it after that, right?

Bumper doesn't match, I'm not paying for that. Re-do it....

I had a customer bedline an entire 1985 or so Bronco 2 shitbox inside and out. Thing wasn't worth 500 bucks before he spent the $2500.00 on bedliner. Worth even less afterwards.

No way would I pay several K for a paint job.  It's purely cosmetic.  Just deal with it.

Just my personal opinion.  It's your money.

That's kinda what the dealer said when my wife's car was done and the bumper was orange peel and dust.  No biggie.
That's what a booth is for.

everything is toss and replace

manufactured goods nowadays are so cheap a few man hours will completely eclipse  the value of most items anymore

Exactly it amazes me how it is a foreign concept to some people

Mainly people who have never been in an ownership or supervisor position

I'm 52 and it amazes me to see the bland acceptance of the hyperinflation in automotive paint jobs. Just goddamned ridiculous. It's fucking PAINT. and they treat it like a magic elixir. EPA, labor, materials, NONE of it justfies $10k+ for a paint job. But fools pay it.  It's akin to worthless liberat arts gender studies degrees going for $200k+. The prices have creeped up rapidly in a market full of bullshit artists and people PAY becaue their skillset has dwindled so far that they think they have no choice. And in various markets the government tries to ensure they don't.

And yes, I've done my own bodywork, prep and paint. Can't legally in CA now, but fuck those socialist tyrant bastards anyway.

/shakes fist at clouds

Never mind that the guy who repairs your has $20k invested in his tools to do the job correctly.  Or that the cost of liquids and dry products he uses increase 8-10% per year, every year.  Or that a guy like you expects show car quality, and at least a 5 year warranty.  That just the disassembly and organization is a day and half...reassembly two days.  Nib/buff/clean is a full day.  There is nearly 5 days and we haven't even started repairing anything...But hey, as you said, "Its fucking PAINT" right?

I paint cars for a living.  I deal with idiots like RichNoman all the fucking time.  Assholes like him bring their busted shitboxes in for repairs and always expect something for nothing and bitch about the cost.  It's not "just paint," dickhead.  I've got years of training and experience, thousands in tools, and EPA regs to follow so I don't get fined.  You want a cheap paint job then do it yourself or go to Maaco.  Either way, it'll look like shit and then you can go to a professional and have it done correctly.

We hear that one probably once a week.

for those prices it's not that hard to learn to do it yourself.   You'll just need a clean room and the metal needs to be about 72 degrees.  Rent a gun and compressor.

I know a guy who pays his painter $20 an hour. Good painter, he is reliable, does not drink or use drugs, shows up to work on time everyday, cleans up his work area and cleans his tools. His paint jobs look good and he does not dick around, no customer complaints after the job is done. Other Shops pay about half that much and go through painters faster than most people buy new socks, missing tools, dirty work areas, and numerous complaints.

Even for a full interior pull and paint that is a lot of money. Was it a special color and lots of body work.
