My worst firearms mistake was selling my US Firearms Gunfighter. :(

Blue is prettier, but carrying it around in the woods, go stainless. Of course nothing  looks better than a well worn blued revolver.

Lol yeah, that was my experience as well. Just had to get one. Took it to the range once or twice but never really loved it enough to stick with it. Sold it a few years later.

A box of 50 rounds of 44 SPC at my LGS is 65. 50 for 45 colt. Just sayin...

Just bought a Taylor's Smoke wagon in 44-40 2 weeks ago. 5 1/2 barrel. Shoots great right out of the box with my handloads.

I currently have a Taylors in .45lc with a matching caliber Rossi.  They scratch my large bore cowboy itch, and I have a .22 lever and revolver for cheap fun plinking.

I'm terrified to go to a cowboy action shooting event, because I KNOW my life will be incomplete without a brace of SAA's and a rifle in .38/.357 and a shotgun.  However my restraint is beginning to wane.

Go play Red Dead Redemption 2 and you will have your answer.  My wife stopped me from buying a horse, but I really wanted one after playing that game for a year.

ETA:  Most of the Cimarrons are Ubertis.  Cimarron and Taylors are importers; Uberti and Pietta are Italian manufacturers.

If you have the money for a range toy, go for it.  There's no reason to NOT own one, anyway.

There's nothing wrong with a .44 Spc single action, but, a .44 Mag SA is still cross compatible ammo wise AND if you develop a need for more horsepower you're gun will do it.
Of course .44 Spc in modern guns and modern brass can equal some .44 mag loads. But for me, I'd opt for a .44 mag revolver even if only shooting .44 Spc. because of the upper end power possibilities.
Just a thought. Either will be nice.

I always default to blue but I don't sail on saltwater.
If the gun fairies magically replaced all my blue revolving pistols with SS models in the middle of the night I'd be irritated, but I'd soldier on happily.

I have a Jones for one of the Bisley 44 specials in 5.5 inch also. I really want the same gun in a 44 magnum, but i can make the Special suit my purposes.

A few years ago I discovered that I really enjoy revolvers. Since then I’ve been made it a point to buy every “old” revolver that strikes my fancy, so long as they aren’t stupidly overpriced and are in good shape.

I figure they’re not going to be around like that forever, and will only go up in price. I have not been disappointed using this approach.

I offer my ~$300 semi-EDC Model 38 as exhibit A:

Exhibit C is this $450 J-frame. I don’t even recall the model off the top of my head, and It’s probably had <100 rounds through it in its life. The most recent 50 of those were from my and a couple of buddies.

And when not if, you get ahold of a carbine in the same caliber (it's just common sense dude no way around that logic) the .44 Spc/Mag have a more substantial rim for the extractor to grab onto.
That means nothing to 99.9% of end users but it matters to me , we all have our little hangups.

For any serious use (aside from hunting and that’s debatable) SAO revolvers were long surpassed in utility and usability on multiple fronts. In terms of just fun range toys though, and especially as project guns to customize and tinker with, they’re excellent.

This, several times over.

My last range trip was an impromptu thing with about five friends. We all met out at one of their family’s farm to fly drones and decided to shoot a few rounds over the pond to close out the day.

I brought the nickel j-frame I posted above, the Model 38 above, and a Marlin 1895SBL in .45-70. I also brought a 50-round box of .38 Spl, a 20-round box of .45-70, two Lee Loaders (.38 Spl, .45-70), a pound each of rifle and pistol powder, a box each of cast bullets, a box of large rifle primers, two boxes of small pistol primers, a short length of 2x4, and a wooden mallet.

We shot all of the prepared ammo and I sat in a folding chair and reloaded on the front bumper of my Jeep while some of us were bullshitting and the rest were shooting. By the time we left we’d shot probably 80 rounds of .45-70 and 150 rounds of .38 Spl - and all my guns and boxes were still full.

If you’re not a reloaded, here’s some unsolicited advice: either go big, or stay very small. Don’t try to make a “bench top” affair out of it. You either need to buy a really efficient progressive press setup and tune your loading process until you can churn out hundreds and hundreds of rounds in very little time… or stay small and cheap enough that you can throw it all in a toolbox and take it to the range/line with you.

The Lee Loader is the absolute simplest way to get into it. It’s $40 and includes everything you need to reload except a wooden mallet, something to sit it on when you’re smacking at it, and consumables. It’s so dead simple you’ll quickly learn what you’re actually doing when you use those big fancy turret presses with all the bells and whistles.

A variant of this would be the Lee Hand Press. I’ve not used one but I plan to pick one up when I end up with a set of hard-to-find or custom dies for my turret presses that I want to be able to take with me to develop a load at the range. The Lee Loader doesn’t use separate dies, so you have to get a “whole setup” (all $40 of it) for each caliber. If you’re to the point that you’re working up loads for accuracy for a benchrest rifle or something, you’re going to want to use the exact same dies to work up the load that you use for producing the whole batch, to eliminate as many variables as possible. The Hand Press will let you do that, and let you load in the field for calibers that you can’t get (or find) Lee Loaders for.

I had a Lee “Classic” kit. It’s sufficient, and has everything you need to reload from the bench… I just found that all of the tooling that came with it was only “adequate”, and realized that I was going to end up upgrading one piece of it at a time until I was left with nothing from the original kit. I gave it all to my dad, bought some Lee Loaders for the calibers I shoot less often, and put together a progressive setup for .223/.300/.45/9mm - basically anything I shoot in quantity in a semi-auto.

I’ve yet to find “practicality” to be a requirement for owning, using, or enjoying firearms.

That’s exactly my point. I have some guns that are more for practical defensive purposes. My NAA and Schofield are fun impractical side projects

My son in law has killed more deer off of our property with his .44 magnum SuperBlackhawk than he has with all his rifles combined.

This is a wise man. Very few of my guns would be considered practical. I bought them for various reasons, the most common reason was that as a history buff,  I wanted to try it. Next most common reason is that it looked like fun.

Probably not there anymore, they sell fast.  A friend bought one and I loaded .45C for him.  It shoots to point of aim and is an excellent firearm.  I lust for one in .38 spl.

Now, I want a .45C, real Colt, 4 3/4" 1873.  I should never have bought those dies.

I would recommend getting the .44 mag so that you can shoot either it or .44 special.  It's a fantastic revolver.

I just bought a Taylor's in 45 colt. It is fun to shoot and no regrets buying it.

I will more than likely go in that direction……… and the open top and conversions from Cimmarron and Uberti will probably be the 2nd one I get
