I know that feeling. On the west coast of Florida they hail,us as “big blue boat.”  We know we’re on the east coast when the radio lights up with “little blue boat” .  We’re officially classed as a super yacht, but the tan colored mega we had just passed in the picture below was kind of like that.

Here is/was my 1989 Hydrostream Vegas XT with a 3.0l OMC Looper on the back. Awesome boat.....would hit right at 85mph on smooth water...I sure miss that boat.  Probably one of the nicest Hydrostreams I've ever seen.

Then a few years ago I switch to this "family" Type pig of a ski boat. It's a 2000 Crownline 248 BW w/ 7.4 MPI and Bravo III.....cruises at around 30mph, might hit 55mph on a good day, but it uses a lot less fuel than my Vegas did....a lot!

@Pirate-50 - there are three primary options for a non-trailerable vessel when faced with a storm:

(1) Shelter in place.  This typically involves finding a “hurricane hole” that offers some shelter from wind and surge and spider tying the boat in place.  That usually involves tying many lines to structure (with chafing gear) and dropping multiple anchors that will allow the boat to rise in the storm surge.  Be aware that marinas with floating docks in particular will require you to leave in the event of a storm.

(2) Haul out.  What it sounds like - a marina will lift you boat out of the water and put it on land above the flood line on blocks.  Many marinas offer a storm haul out contract where you may pay thousands a year for a “reservation.”  I’ve witnessed that “reservation” get lost when a storm arrives, though, and yards fill up very fast when a storm is projected.  Most marine insurance plans cover the cost of a haul out, because this is their preferred option (over sheltering in place).

(3) Don’t be there.  Most yachts leave the southern US during hurricane season and either go far south (ex: Virgin Islands) or far north.  Those that don’t may run from a storm if one heads their way.  This can be dangerous, as a minor mechanical failure may leave you stranded in the path.  People have died that way in every storm I’ve seen.  I’m heading up north this summer and will run to the Great Lakes if something like Sandy happens again.

Since this is a picture thread, here’s my little boat getting hauled out about two weeks ago:

My dads 1981 Hatteras 48MY when he bought it 6 years ago.  Looks much better now after a complete overhaul but I can't find any pictures of it.

He enjoys having a project to work on more than anything so next on the list is a 1975 Hatteras 31 we will use for some fishing offshore.

Last but not lease is my little sailboat.  Hauled it at the beginning of the year to do some work to it which is badly needed but will hopefully get it back in the water for next season.  It is a 1968 Soverel 28.
