Looks pretty cool. Great cast, right director, I'm hopeful.

And, most importantly, not demanding it meet every facet and detail of the book...as no film based on fiction like this can, or should.

I'll watch it, because it's Dune.
But I'll call it now -- if it bombs, it's the casting director's fault.

I'll take a SWAG and assume Herbert was a westerner. Back decades ago, when the western world eclipsed all others, it was all the rage to romanticize other cultures. Stories of Alladin, the Orient, etc. were popular. I recall a common saying among old people was: "If you can't bring Mohammed to the mountain, bring the mountain to Mohammed".  The foreign word "jihad" was also romanticized.  Now that our weekness is fuelling actual, bloody Islamic jihad, it is not as distant, mysterious or romantic as it was in more innocent times.

I'll cut Herbert some slack and let his estate gather a bit of royalty money off my movie ticket for this.

Looks good, but I'm just not convinced you can condense the book into a movie with good results.

Its not about it being super high brow literature or anything, there is just a lot going on. This might have been better suited to a netflix series.

That assumes that there will be movies beyond the two for Dune.  Duncan Idaho as a Mentat only becomes an issue for Momoa if they do the books after. And then if he can't, they can just replace him and say it was a change resulting from how he was....found. (not going to spoil)

I have liked Momoa since SGA but i am skeptical he can fill the Mentat role Duncan becomes later. Duncan becomes more integral later in the series. Momoa's acting will be stretched if the directors are true to the Duncan caracter. This is especially true if they continue on with the series. I hope Momoa can do the Mentat side.

How is Duncan Idaho a mentat?    Unless he later became one as a ghola(clone).    I don’t recall that.  I never read much past the first four (?, first three for sure). He was more like a personal bodyguard I thought.

I am so fucking in.

That looks great. Dune is a top 3 movie and book for me.

I have seen the 80's movie more times than i can count. I've read the book several times and many of the other books.

Casting seems solid. The Beast, the Barron, Gurney, Stilgar, etc. Duncan might be a reach, but Momoa looks the part.

When the book was written jihad was just an exotic word for war. In today’s context it means much more.

The term Jihad still fits IMO.

The original Dune film is one of those rare films that stuck in my mind long after i left the theater. Also one I've seen more than once, or even desired to. Guess I'll start that series after seeing this version.

I'm excited about it. Big fan of Frank's Dune books. There is some woke ass casting and woke ass comments from some of the actors, Rebecca Ferguson made some woke ass comments about woman power and how she didn't like women being subservient in the dune universe or some shit.

Did she even read the damn book, Jessica was powerful and the Duke knew she was a great partner and asset to his house. The Bene Gesserit were all women and had been controlling mankind for thousands of years.

Edit. Not to mention Alia of the Knife and her story, some of them didn't read shit.

Eta 2. Jessica beat up Fremen men with her weirding way techniques, and the Fremen were the fiercest warriors in the galaxy. In their first encounter with the Fremen after escaping the Harkonnen. Didn't. Read. Shit.

ETA 3. Total Dune Nerd. Jessica's training of paul in Bene Gesserit and weirding way techniques is just as if not MORE important to what Paul becomes as Halleck, Hawats and idaho's training. DIDN'T READ SHIT

Dune really calls for a longer treatment than a 2 hour movie, but we'll see.    I honestly think they could split it into a 3 part trilogy:
Part 1 - intro to Dune, and everything that happens up to the Harkonnen attack
Part 2 - escape, hiding, etc.
Part 3 - Paul turns into a man and comes back to defeat the Emperor

There's absolutely no reason to deal with any of the later books. To be honest, they're just not that good.  (And I say that as somebody who re-reads them every 5-10 years, with the mistaken hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised).

God Emperor isn't too bad, but the rest are tedious reads, with a few tidbits here and there.   By the time Chapterhouse comes along, it's just hundreds of pages of scheming nuns.

I agree that the 1st book should be multiple movies. When the scifi channel did their adaption it was a miniseries and they still had to cut a bunch.

As for the rest of Frank Herberts dune I love all of the originals and would love to see the golden path to the God emperor on the big screen.

The expanded universe written by Brian Herbert and K.J. Anderson is hit or miss. Some of the house books are great but others are just a cash grab. I do enjoy the ones that happen thousands of years prior regarding the machine crusade and the buttelarian Jihad which are heavily based on Frank Herbert's notes.

There are some pretty bad ass women in the Dune series I agree she did not read it. Pauls very existence, the war, and the eventual collapse of the empire is because Jessica decided to not be a puppet to authority and had a son instead of a daughter.

From some of the earlier comments, the Bene Gesserit are basically going to be Jedi.  It's one of many clues that have me nervous about the movie being overly woke.  And it completely misses the point.  In Dune, women are strong because of their femininity, not in spite of it.  The Bene Gesserit are so powerful because of their breeding program, and their capabilities as seductresses among their other talents.

I must not hype. Hype is the joy-killer. Hype is the over-excitement that brings total disappointment. I will face my hype. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when hype has gone past I will turn my outer eye to the screen to see the actual product. Where the hype has gone there will be critique. Only it will remain.

Paul Atreides is supposed to be a rather slight ~16yo in the books IIRC.

The Bene Gesseret plan was for him to be a daughter to wed to Feyd, who is a lot more of an athletic chad-looking dude.

It is not that the Bene Gesserit are like the Jedi but vice versa. George Lucas based much of the original trilogy and some of the 2nd trilogy off Dune. Much of the Jedi was based off the Bene Gesserit. He even jacked names Princess Alia became princess Leah. From sand worms, trade federations, space Messiahs determined by a mystical force to much more, SW's success has its origins from the mind of Frank Herbert.
