Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Official Trailer | Comic Con 2022 |
|
Saw many monsters from Monster Manual 1.
Black Dragon is spitting acid at the beginning. |
|
For the longest time I thought D&D was a cartoon I watched as a kid.

Stronk female. Slightly effeminate white male lead that looks like he auditioned for a New york city based RomCom movie with Emily Blunt but somehow ended up in this movie. Black badass combat male dude. Little 87 lbs red headed teenage girl that can change into an owl bear and wreck 6'7" 250lb males with ease. What could go wrong?

|
Sets and costume look like shit.
CGI looks like shit. Story is gonna suck. Looks PG13. Skip |
|
Looks like it could be fun!
Been forever since I played D&D... back when 2nd Edition was the latest! |

Looks terrible. Like cringe throughout the entire movie terrible. Playing Led Zeppelin in the trailer made it even worse. I guess at least they didn't have rap music, that's a plus.

That's the most Marvel treatment I've ever seen given to a non Marvel movie. Apparently that's presently the best recipe for box office success.
I guess Guardians of the Dungeons and Dragons or Dungeons and Ragnarok just don't roll off the tongue. |
|
Looks like fun. Some monsters look a little odd, but whatever.

I’m going to watch it and hope my soul get possessed by a demon like the church lady said I would.

Chris Pine is a pretty accomplished actor and has been in a lot of big name movies/franchises. Either he got a massive payday for this flick, his agent lied to him and said it will be The next Lord of The Rings or Game of Thrones, or he was contractually obligated to do a multi-movie deal for a studio and this steaming pile of garbage was all they had on their plate to put him in before his contract expired and he didn't have to do a movie.

|
The next CGI-riddled hero blockbuster. I’ll pass unless I hear it’s good.
The owl-bear is cool though |
|
Ill probably wait for streaming... but I'll watch it. Looks like fun and I like bad movies anyway.

Someone's trying too hard to copy the James Gunn/Takia Waititi Marvel vibe. |

That kind of light-hearted approach could work. Usually D&D movies get derailed by being too serious. AD&D is generally not a serious world.

This looks like it will be "not good" and yet a lot of fun. Panned by critics, not understood by mundanes, but enjoyed by all of us DnD nerds.
Good cast. |
|
I wish they would do an Icewind Dale Trilogy...as a starter for Drizzt. As long as they would keep it from being woke...that would make some bank. R.A. Salvatore has a gift for words. You can get a perfect picture in your. Head of.the fight.
Elminster's story would also be engaging. Ed Greenwood has a knack for the same type of writing and subtle humor that is also contemporary. |

Bumbling male protagonist for comedic relief? Check
"Strong Woman" characters to save the bumbling male(s)? Check Absolute shit ton of CGI? Check Predicting a 4-5/10, probably will be as good the recent Thor/Jurassic Park; AKA, terrible. |

I've always wanted to try dnd, but that would involve having the right kind of nerdy friends.
|
|
Youll all be disappointed.
Side note. The current tactic for suckering audiences seems to be an accompanying soundtrack of 80s rock largely pioneered by marvel gotg. |
|
I like the music & the trailer - so it is going to suck balls.
|
|
That looked bad. I'm not HUGE into D&D. I understand the underlying principles in how the game works, as I've played computer games based on the ruleset, but I've never actually sat down and read D&D lore books. That being said, it just looks bad from a visual standpoint, which makes me assume it'll also be bad from a storyline standpoint. That was some really bad CGI for 2022.

Did that group jump straight into a gelatinous cube? That'll be hilarious to watch if so.
Owlbear is cool. Probably wait to stream it unless my group wants to go for shits and giggles. |

Jesus, that looks terrible but amazing. Not theater-worthy but if I can find it on streaming, I'd watch juat for the nerdery

View Quote Considering they're basing the movie themes on stuff that was popular in the 80s (comics, games etc.), the logic seems to follow. Not to mention that Hollywood is all about making money, and will follow a successful formula until it's shown to be beyond played out (Fast and Furious 87: modded mobility scooters). There are a tiny number of folks who may be visionary (the ones who first try something, eg. The whole found footage thing with The Blair Witch Project), but once something is proven to make money, EVERYONE in Hollywood tries to jump on the bandwagon. It even happens when something is rumored to be the next big thing (i.e. when a movie is being filmed and word gets around, there will be multiple low budget movies based on the same general theme, or merely rumors of the one movie's theme/concept). |

It doesn't look horribad. I like seeing the D&D monsters (displacer beast, mimic, owlbear, gelatinous cube, black dragon) depicted correctly AND doing things they would do. Even if the Black Dragon spraying acid was practically a frame by frame of Danny attacking the Lannisters on Wyvernback. But that might be a totally intentional Meta thing, cause every D&D game borrows, or steals, inspiration like that! And yeah, the tiefling druid wild shaping is pretty good.
But as a lifelong D&D Nerd that has been burned many times, I'm going in with very low expectations. And I'm taking my wife. Who is playing a Dragonborn druid and just did her first wild shape the other night in our game! I'm cautiously optimistic. (Like, did you know there was a Dragonlance animated movie? dear gawd....pure garbage) |
