Hybrid electric makes sense for some transportation & agricultural applications... EV motor, reasonably sized battery pack, and diesel (or even gas) generator running on demand.

That being said, replacing your currently running equipment would make absolutely no sense.

Million dollar tractors everywhere....

Look what's happened to commercial lawn mowers.  A $40 mow will turn into an $80 mow here real soon.

A regular diesel powered school bus cost around $115,000.  And EV school bus cost between $350,000 to $400,000.

Same increase for a JD tractor.

EV is not sustainable

A lithium battery for a combine that can last as long as a farmer needs to is going to weigh, what, 3 tons? Nobody is making a quick change 3 ton anything.

And when the tech is there, the farmers looking at paying through the nose for diesel, or charging on (maybe?) cheaper electricity will clamor for the stuff.

Until then, while I have seen videos of pre-production stuff, like one tractor, and one skidsteer, those are certainly still niche.  I'm guessing the skidsteer will find a home with anyone doing work entering buildings.  Kinda like how electric forklifts are fantastic for working around inside a warehouse.  But you still see ICE forklifts if they are out in a field.  Which are cool machines, if you've never seen them.

In another discussion forum I frequent, A friend of mine posted that a farmer she knows that does work on a test form for John Deere is being pressured to switch to electric tractors. They want to do this within a year.

Anybody on here heard of this being implemented within such a ridiculous deadline? She said her friend stated that the growth and harvest cycle requires tractors to be running nonstop for a week or more. How can they possibly create a tractor capable of running on battery power for 24 hours, little alone in under a year?

If what the John Deere rep reportedly said to the farmer is true, it sounds like Biden's administration is smoking some good stuff. This is reminiscient of the Soviet Union's central planning fiasco under Stalin, with impossible goals and resultant failures. Of course, starvation was the plan then... is it the plan now?

You are not replacing 500 hp tractors with electric.

Like the 3 phase power running to every farm pivot?

I'm not saying that it's practical but it's certainly not impossible either.

Tethered equipment with a small onboard battery for short distance transport would work.

I was close to a pivot all of one time when I was cutting wheat this summer.  Not even close to practical.

What will actually happen is the small farmers won't be able to afford either option, their ground will be bought by large corporate farms or Bill Gates, and the powers that be will continue their long (but nearly finished) march to full control of the ag industry.

Eat bugs and soy paste and like it, peasants.

So on an average 12hour harvesting day, combine burns 250 gallons of diesel, how many kWh does that convert to?

Gallon of diesel has 37.8 kWh equivalent.

Standard Tesla model 3 battery is 50 kWh and weighs 706 lbs and is equivalent to 1.32 gallons of diesel equivalent energy.

So you would burn through 15 Tesla batteries per hour, 181 tesla charges per day.  You would need 127,786 pounds worth of batteries to run a day.

Battery power for heavy constant loads at this point of technology are retarded.

and the kicker is you have to scrap a diesel bus to even be considered.   you have to provide VINs for the diesel buses that will be scrapped.

Low effort click bait.

It’s United’s venture capital group.

Also:

United would not disclose the value of the order, which is conditional on the aircraft's meeting safety, business and operating requirements.

Meaning, the order is on paper only.  As everything about the plane is speculative at best. And conditional on the FAA approval of its flight. Which, is doubtful.

All hype.
