 A TikTokker who used to work at a Cracker Barrel in Arizona has revealed a “code word” that she claims some of her coworkers used to refer to Black customers. @cinnamnhoney shared her experience as a hostess at the popular restaurant chain in a video that has been viewed over 237,000 times. “A waitress used to complain SO MUCH if I sat ‘Canadians’ in her section & I was so perplexed bc i thought canadians were stereotyped as nice,” she wrote in her caption. “Me, a hostess at cracker barrel, wondering how every employee knew a table was full of canadians even though they didn’t have a telling accent,” the on-screen caption reads in the video. Employees at Cracker Barrel use a “code word” to refer to black customers, according to an ex-hostess. |

My friends that worked as servers introduced me to the term "spoda."
As in they don't know they "spoda" tip. Used in a sentence, "I just got seated with a big party of Spodas." |

Must be a FOH thing. I worked there off an on for 3 years, mostly as a Sunday morning church crowd mercenary cook. Never heard that in BOH.

Not at all uncommon. I worked at a restaurant back in the day and we had words for foreigners, Karens, the Saudi immigrant students, etc.
They weren't derogatory but these situations manifested after COUNTLESS similar encounters. They didn't just randomly create themselves. They were earned. I mean, it's part of being a waiter. The movie "Waiting" wasn't far off but we never spit in food (or any of what they did). But the games, code words, having fun with inside jokes...all part of it. |

I've heard it used but back in the '80s when I was in high school and worked in a couple of restaurants the waitstaff, black and white, just referred to them as non-tippers and none of them wanted them in their sections, especially on Sundays after church let out. The black waitstaff used to make comments about how the black customers treated them like "house...", well you know the rest. Constantly complaining, eating half their meals then expecting them to be replaced or comped, etc. Yeah, I worked in a Red Lobster for a couple of months- I haven't been in one since.

Same here. I waited tables far too long, at several restaurant chains in several states. Everyone referred to Canadians. The funniest part were the black waiters and waitresses who refused to serve other black people because they were all shitty tippers.
You will NEVER stop evolution. Generalizing about types of people will never go away. It's a trait we inherited millions of years ago like Jordan Peterson's Lobster reference. |

Theres a reason for that. And if you ever worked in a restaurant you'd know why. Unfortunately, i worked for years as a waiter outside of DC to get myself through college. EVERYONE at EVERY restaurant used some sort of code word.
And i hate to say it; but without exception they would live up to the stereotypes. |

Big deal. You should of heard the way the management and wait staff talked to my wife and family at a “Blacks Only” chain Resturant outside of New Orleans. The Black manager asked us to leave.
