This is a terribly mournful song, and it has gotten to me a few times. This is Colin Vearncomb, or as he used to go by, Black. He's known for having one of the best voices around, incredible range and tremendous power. He's an old school crooner type, which I appreciate. He's also known for being a masterful craftsman at song writing, and this one is a master class on how to build a song, It's a two minute ride before it starts to get going, but it builds into a crescendo of emotion and soulful playing and singing. Give it a listen, let it develop.
Black - Water on Snow (Water On Snow) Did I sleep? Do I dream of cold, silent water So deep and dark And the wires are singing our song? Our song As we lay back and stared into cloudless skies And the stars up there The wires are singing our song The wires are singing our song Your face, now so plain, once was so lovely A beautiful refrain, dust with stars But your smile now in disguise became a flat line And to never love again like you did before Was all Why go on with it, why go on with it? Why, to let it flow, like water on snow? I know what you want, what you are thinking To drift beyond the pain and out of reach To sit, be safe and warm inside your sorrow And listen to the slow, slow morse tapping of the rain But it says: Why go on with it? Why go on with it? Why to let it flow like water on snow? The song he had a big hit with here, he wrote while his mom was nearly dying in the hospital, he lost his recording contract, got hit by a car, and wound up in the hospital himself for weeks, and, lost his home. He said, in this one, he decided to look at the good in everything, even the bad situations in his life at the time. While it's not a sad song, it certainly makes you consider the effects of positive thinking. Black -- Wonderful Life [[ Official Video ]] HD |

This one, I'm sure most of us can relate to, especially recently, and though it never made me cry, it stirred my soul to sadness. I'm not a big crier. I didn't cry when my mother died, until the end of the funeral when they were lowering the casket into the grave. It's not being tough, it's just not how I react very often. Anyway, I had a very good friend for 20 years, that went completely left wing. We were tight up until then. When I got engaged to my wife of the time, in 2000, I called him. He told me to drop everything and head to Myrtle Beach. He was the manager and head chef at the California Dreaming restaurant there. He was going to put us up in his condo with him and his girlfriend, and to meet them at dinnertime at California Dreaming. Now, I was close to being broke at that time so I wasn't going top go, but he convinced me. We got there, and he had a dozen long stem roses waiting at our table for her with a card from me, with a box of fine chocolates. He waited on us, and told us to order anything we wanted it was on the house. The meals ended up around $70 each, plus her wine. That's one story, and I did do things like that for him as well, like friends do. But, the politics got really bad, he got really nasty about things, so I cut ties with him, and haven't talked to him since.
This song sort of speaks to that. Morten Harket, from A-Ha Morten Harket "Brother" Official Video |

Quoted: Quoted: Was going to post this. My daughter got married 18 mos. ago and this was the song she and I danced to. I used to sing it to her when she was little and she’d hold my hand and tell me she’s never leaving her daddy to get married. It’s getting dusty in here just thinking about it. Lucky you, brother, lucky you. Well said. |

TAPS, gets me during funerals, in person or on Tv. I may be dead inside, have a stone face but there will be tears in my eyes. I do not apologize or feel less a man because I have tears when TAPS play at a funeral. I didn’t even cry when my mother died, but TAPS gets me.

The song Elämänperhonen by Jenni Vartiainen can get me a little misty. It tells the story of a mother in the hospital at the bed side of her dying little girl. She’s begging her to hang on a little longer. It ends with the line, “Don’t go, I'm right here, don’t go, not yet, not yet…” ending with the sound of the heart monitor alarm.

Amazing Grace, mostly ingrained from every mil memorial service I ever attended.
O Come, All Ye Faithful, my mothers Christmas favorite. We were raised in an Episcopal church that had a huge Flentrop organ and brought in a Duke chorus to supplement the congregation for Midnight Mass. It was very moving, and always makes me think of her. |

Holes In The Floor Of Heaven I didn't like this song when it came out. Thought it was too sappy. After 30 plus years and too many funerals later it takes on a different meaning. ETA: Holes In The Floor Of Heaven by Steve Wariner. |

Quoted: Another great example! Are you familiar with the film The Broken Circle Breakdown? It's a movie from Belgium where the protagonists fall in love because of their passion for American Bluegrass music. There's more going on in the plot but the actors were actually the performers for the soundtrack. The Wayfaring Stranger was done in the film. It's a great rendition of the classic American folk song and the actress sings it with such soul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LprqBP0JTw View Quote . This version gets me sometimes. There are several versions out there but this is the only one I feel carries the gravity of the song. The preivous poster's version is not bad by any means but listening to the song without the visuals, the vocals don't grab me the same it the same way as is done by Hayde. |
