@Blackbeard28  I'm the only ARF member who lives (well, lived) on Sanibel.  We evacuated for the storm and are fine.  We're filing insurance claims now, but I don't imagine we'll go back to Sanibel for many months given the situation with the bridge.

Glad you guys are safe. Yeah, I don't see that getting fixed for a while.

Do you think that access will be blocked?  Your ID has your address, right?  I think they would allow it and I’m sure you have a tender that can put right up on the beach I have an 18’ center console that can if you don’t. Get there and secure the house and board up windows that have been broken, start removing anything waterlogged.

Can you get offshore and put up a drone anyways?

I have a hurricane pass and could get there if I really wanted to.  There will be no power, no comms and no help for a LONG time.  The causeway bridge is what carried power across to the island (in addition to aerial lines from Pine Island).  To go to the west coast in middle of all that noise and boat to the island would be quite an endeavor just to secure a house that's probably destroyed.  I'm going to wait a few days for my contacts to get comms and then make a decision then.

@blackfox there are multiple breaches in the causeway...boat/ferry or helicopter will be the only way on the island for a while

also is this pic is legit the entire end of sanibel has been removed.  The fishing pier etc.  you should not be able to see the base of the lighthouse from that angle.    Where are the 3 buildings that sat at the base of the lighthouse?

Pretty sure they're legit.

NBC keeps playing a video that is panning from there to the causeway damage.

The sad thing is that my wife and I were discussing heading there next month for our anniversary just over a week ago. That is not happening. There is so much unknown now. Like are there any hotels left? Will they be able to weather the lack of business. It would be good to get a ferry going soon.

What is a hurricane pass. I assume it's a pass that lets home owners go back to their property?

F off dude...people can be sad for all types of reasons.   I have a time share there that I use 2 weeks out of the year and I am sad that I might never see it again.    My wife's family has been going to Sanibel for over 30 years, they are all sad.   Leave it alone.

Simple: you get both a hurricane, but typically one is different than the other.

There's a pretty significant difference between this (Ian - a flood hurricane):

Probably smart. I'd expect Skyline's probably got a deeper draft than most things operating in that area, and who knows what was washed where. What was a safe channel days ago might have hidden hazards - then again I don't know what kind of gizmos and sensors you have to avoid that stuff. Not to mention picking a spot to anchor as there are almost certainly no spots to dock.

Any word from your other property? I hope you didn't lose many of those old oaks.

@taylorWhite

how are you making out? I know you said you were worried about what you'd find in daylight, but I didn't catch an update (sorry if I missed it). Hope you're OK!

They used to have a ferry service up to 1963 when the causeway was constructed.   I could see a movement by the greenies and tree huggers to go back to a ferry and limit cars on the island.  Traffic is an issue

If you need a place to put up on the west coast is Marco an option?  I have family in the area (inland on Collier Blvd) and the last I heard from them when Ian was about to make landfall was that they had not catastrophic damage.  (ETA- Just heard some surge about 14 of the streets on the island effected, island is without power).  Wind was not significant in that area yesterday.

I can't imagine that getting close to Sanibel with a large vessel would be anything less than a complete cluster as your navigation charts are probably useless.

Probably fine. I grew up playing the in the woods just south of there between 6 Mile and Plantation Rd. The area always had standing water from rain, but I truly doubt the surge made it there.

i used to live in fort myers. I looked up that address and it's just off colonial blvd.

fox weather had a reporter down the street opposite the racetrac station on colonial and Winkler/Ortiz. Looked windy and wet but no flooding. I wouldn't worry.

none of my texts are going thru to friends so I'm assuming cells towers are down.

Give banditman a break - he didn't mean it that way.  He's a good guy and a local.  In fact, he's the one that recommended I move to Sanibel over a decade ago.  Wait a minute, maybe all of this is his fault!!

Go to the 3 minute mark...multiple breaches of the Sanibel Causeway....

For those that don't know this - the Sanibel Marina is NOT on Sanibel.  It's on the mainland side.  I have seen zero aerial footage besides the few stills posted by USCG.  I'm kind of curious why they're not letting anyone fly over Sanibel right now....

you made me check flightaware.

Nothing in the air over Sanibel or Captiva itself.

Give banditman a break - he didn't mean it that way.  He's a good guy and a local.  In fact, he's the one that recommended I move to Sanibel over a decade ago.  Wait a minute, maybe all of this is his fault!!

LOL

If you (of all people) can cut him a break, I certainly can.

His post just seemed a little callous.  I have not posted any updates from our situation (3 days of rain & 30+ MPH winds) because it pales in comparison to what you guys down there are dealing with.

Steering back into my lane.

Thanks for the info!
Is this something they do every time there is a hurricane? Just curious.

If it's anything like ours used to be further up the coast, you get them when you register your vehicles/change addy on driver's license, and you have to have them and an ID proving you live there before you're allowed back in.

The county here (Citrus) is doing away with the passes and just using DL's to verify you do or don't belong somewhere, post-evacuation

Crazy that a section of the Sanibel Causeway is gone. I've been on that bridge a thousand times. Anyone on Captiva and Sanibel is going to be stuck there for a long time. Any members live in the area?

@Blackbeard28  I'm the only ARF member who lives (well, lived) on Sanibel.  We evacuated for the storm and are fine.  We're filing insurance claims now, but I don't imagine we'll go back to Sanibel for many months given the situation with the bridge.

The sad thing is that my wife and I were discussing heading there next month for our anniversary just over a week ago. That is not happening. There is so much unknown now. Like are there any hotels left? Will they be able to weather the lack of business. It would be good to get a ferry going soon.

People talking about losing their houses there and your vacation plan is "the sad thing?"

Thank you BlackFox. I love going there and am genuinely concerned for the local businesses and locals.

What is a hurricane pass. I assume it's a pass that lets home owners go back to their property?

Yes.  Nobody without a hurricane pass that matches their vehicle registration or photo ID will be allowed on the island.

They issue hurricane passes annually at the Sanibel recreation center to residents.  It's been a thing for as long as I can remember.

i used to live in fort myers.

So, this may be odd, but my GF has a friend down in Fort Meyers that we can't get a hold of.  Their address is:
4430 Dutchess park rd
(By the CalUsa Nature center)
Anyone have an idea of how that area fared? We cannot get any comms in or out and she is worried now.

Much appreciated! I passed on what you said and I think it did help her a bit. Not too surprised nothing is going through,  but she is stressed.

She wanted to drive down, but that just doesn't make sense right now. .
