I employ 200Ish people. Probably equal dollar wise, payroll to Benchmade. You get a snow ball of cancellation of orders or just small dealers not ordering... It adds up quick. All while you still have payroll going out, material bills going out, overhead costs, r&d costs... Line of credits start getting hit fast. Becomes bad publicity when you need to start laying people off. View Quote http://archive.is/Bn9cO They operate with minimal inventory (unremarkable) but everything is assembled to order. 4-5 days from order to ship. Plus they are getting returns from dealers (as noted in the big thread). The JIT guys are designed to operate on a pretty much continuous flow, sometimes staffing up or down for seasonal trends. Now he's the talk of the industry, and it ain't good talk. Most knife guys who occasionally drop by knife forums are well aware of it. Collectors are aware of it. Nobody wants to invest in a brand that smells like a skunk. His shop is either gonna coast building inventory (which they can't do much of, since customization is a big % of sales) or build the most popular models, which is what is being returned from PO'ed dealers. Distributors will throttle back on buying and cash flow is gonna take a hit. When distributors tell him about accounts giving up the brand, sales & marketing will scramble for new accounts, many of whom they had told to pound sand (per the marketing guy's core-dump to Portland "entrepreneurs".) If they try big box or Amazon they'll get beat up on margins. So what do you do with a couple hundred people and a major hiccup in orders? Dip into revolving credit to keep em around doing... something, or lay em off? Depends on the owner and his recognition of the problem as being fundamental or temporary. Look at Dick's sporting goods. The boss is an idiot. Has no idea what his customers want, who they are. He's a billionaire. His company takes a major hit and he's still a billionaire (a smaller one tho). Can the Benchmade guy ride out a week? A month? Till the Holiday shopping season? Nope. Layoffs. Even if only a handful, even if temporary, nothing spooks the herd (employees) like the L word. The best people often go of their own volition first, as their talents are in demand. So now he has to hire (maybe an engineer, maybe a cnc guy or two) while laying off $10-15/hr assemblers. There goes morale, productivity and quality (which BM can't afford to lose). He's in a bigger pickle than he realizes and he is absolutely clueless why. Since his competitors now know his marketing research and planning, they can anticipate his response (although the blabbermouth marketing guy moved on to another company in early 2018). TV picking it up caught everyone by surprise. Business schools will use this as a case study (and misinterpret why things went sideways). This is a fascinating evolution to witness for old guys (like me) and a great education on business and knowing your customer for younger guys. They can learn a lot from this. |

Didn’t watch but from what I’m gathering from posts is that it was as chopped up as a Mosin Nagant in a Po-Po weapons disposal PR stunt. True?

Can you imagine what it's like in the HQ right now? Everyone sitting in the dark around a table, going "What the fuck do we do now? Boss, you've got to make a statement. You've got to walk this back." "Ok, but I'm going to be very noncommittal and it's going to need heavy editing so I don't say what I really mean." "We can work with that." View Quote |

Wow.
He must also be a micro manager that does not empower those in his employee to make decisions and/or speak up. Not a single person at that company would have told anyone honestly that video was effective. The only place I have seen shit like that is when leaders are either not respected or completely micro managing a business to the point that theirs is the only opinion in the room. I will keep what I have but will not order another. I will also be contacting a few vendors I do business with and let my feelings be known about one of their top selling brands. What a shit show. He really could have made it better by owning it but he did far more damage with the video. He had terrible body language when talking to the 2nd amendment and by the end of it I am not even sure he made any point at all. I really thought it was a stupid mistake they made but that video is convincing to me that he is absolutely not a supporter of gun rights. |

Right now they are in a pile on the kitchen table, waiting to be sold. My virtue signaling is complete, and I'm just here for the gifs |

I just feel bad the employees got stuck with this shitty company because they’ll be out of jobs when benchmade dies

Weak as fuck response. Barely touches on the issue and when he does, needs an edit (at 1:12) because he even fucked that up. Comments disabled...because he is a fucking coward. As they say, how you respond to an adverse incident is more important than the fact that it took place...and he reacted like a blustering nervous fucking coward. Fuck him. With one of his overpriced knives. That he uses to stab all off us in the back. Fat fuck. And how pathetic is it that he actually had to move two "I love me awards" into the left half of the frame? The body language here was very telling. Constant blinking, fidgeting right hand, cuts in the video....
It got so bad they cut it and had him put his hands behind his back. Watch it from a higher altitude and you'll see. |

My son has been hinting he wanted an auto-triage for his birthday.
That's not gonna happen. Such is life. There's lots of other good quality knives out there. |

I think a cutlery company is in the perfect position to be 2A friendly but still not incur political wrath based on their products. For the life of me I can't understand why Bitchmade decided to throw that away, either by hubris or they just didn't think anyone was paying attention.
