Sometimes what’s old is new again….
Old model Python next to a new one. I appreciate the elegance of classic revolvers as well as autos. When it comes to defense? My daily is a Sig 938, truck gun a Glock 31 and in the nightstand sits a Glock 17.

The easiest way to spot an "elegant" pistol (in general) is to look for curved surfaces where one is not needed. For example, on the OP's sample SIG, the concentric steps of the front of the muzzle of the slide are strickly for appearance. The same function could be done with a flat surface (a la Glock), but the steps invoke "styling" and that invokes an art form.
The same can be said for the rear surfaces of the slide, or the top surfaces. Modern pistols are all very slab-surfaced, and this is predominately because they are CHEAPER TO PRODUCE. Art has given way to practicality on modern designs. |

Quoted: Some guns just ooze elegance & class. The Sig P232 is indeed one of those pistols. Sig took design cues from the Makarov and Walter PP/PPK and created a pistol that’s better in every regard. Better trigger, perfectly shrouded hammer, fewer sharp edges, and a frame mounted decocker that’s vastly superior to the slide mounted safety. Sadly, Sig Sauer stopped manufacturing this model in 2015. With the new wave of micro 380s and subcompact 9mms, I can certainly understand the business logic behind that decision. Compared to my Shadow Systems CR920, the Sig is heavier, slightly larger, and carries 3 fewer rounds in a weaker chambering. My last pic below shows the Shadow Systems sitting atop the Sig for comparison. That said, there’s something about this pistol that puts a smile on my face. First and foremost, it’s flat out gorgeous. I have fairly large hands, yet it seems to fit me perfectly. It’s beautifully manufactured, attention to detail is evident at every turn. Simply put, it has soul. OP is correct.
S&W, Colt, Marlin…all the big US gang cut down on polish for profit. S&W in particular used to “show off” with counter-boring cylinders for rimmed magnums, barrel pinning & custom orders. The only US-made Interarms Walther I owned was a horrible, dangerous POS; I only own West German & Thuringia Walther pistols. SIGs from West Germany had their own panache, too. |

As a former 1980s Honda Civic owner—I miss the 45 MPG highway elegance…but it was loud to drive vs a Porsche & wasn’t meant to be driven above 70 mph. Once you own an Audi, Porsche or equivalent quiet, quick, responsive car, it’s like putting the genie back in the bottle. I regularly accidentally “cruise” above the speed limit in my Porsche & Audi, simply because the haptic feedback including car vibration & road noise from an inexpensive Honda or Toyota is absent. But I do miss 45 MPG on the highway, I will admit…. |

A piece of plastic with a rectangle shaped slide is cheaper and faster to make. We are in the age of consumerism. Quantity one quality. Up until the late 90s early 00s companies were content on making products and just making any profit. Now it's solely about beating last quarters numbers. If you don't have record sales and growth every reporting period the street treats you like a failure.
