Gen X'er checking in...

Ass whippin' with Hot Wheel tracks
Drank from the hose
Played outside until the street lights came on
No bike helmets
No seat belts
Realistic toy guns
Steel playground equipment over concrete
Eating whatever was put in front of you (or starving)

Great time to be a kid.

That was my life as a kid. Side effect of growing up in the midwest I suppose, since I was born in 85. Everything used to be behind the curve.
Shit on me all you want, I still grew up free and dangerously.

To be fair, we Gen-Xers had no reason to learn to type. The internet hadn’t yet rounded the corner when typing classes were a thing. I remember my school counselor talking to me in the hall to suggest typing classes for an elective.

I threw him an “Are you fucking high?” look and said, “No... I don’t plan on being a secretary” as I walked away.
Whoops.

The only good advice from a HS counselor I ever got was to take a typing class. I did squeak by, despite 4 stitches in my right hand index finger, the Friday before we did b's.  I still type them with my left hand.

As an early millenial, I have to ask; can you blame him?

Personally, I look at the Corvette as an indicator of generational variance.

In the year you were born, did the Corvette have the big swoopy front end that looked like two bananas?  Yes? Gen X.

In the year you were born, did the Corvette have a shorter front end that basically made it look like a front-engined Fiero?  Millenial.

Were you born in 1983?  You're fucked either way.  There was no Corvette.

I was born in 1983.

That's funny. My youngest brother was born 8/1/81. He claims that he's not a millenial b/c Gen X runs thru 82; the rest of us responded, "You know who says that shit? People who don't want to be associated with millenials."

The C2's were pure sex.  The C3 was ugly.  The C4 was much better than the C3.  There I said it. I grew up in Bloomington, IL, home of "Bloomington Gold", ie, the biggest Corvette show.  Still not a big fan of the 'vette.  For reference, my younger brother was born in town in '71.

This thread is awesome! Thank to everyone for pulling me out of a tough time with all this BS going on right now.
@KampusKop @CarmelBytheSea
In our mall that store was called Keyhole. Ninja stars, Rambo knives, handshake buzzers, whoopie cushions, stink grenades et al.

Speaking of malls. I was fortunate enough to see Tiffany live 2 times in 2 different malls. She was hot AF then and I'd still rack her today.

Debbie Gibson, Belinda Carslile, Molly Ringwald. Lawd.
Playboy magazines were worth more than hard currency.
School teachers would still whoop your ass in the 70's.
I remember my dad's favorite ass whoopin' method was to grab me by the cuff of the arm and kick me in the ass so hard he had to keep hold of me to keep me from flying away.
Atari 2600 and those damned joysticks with one button. The cover of the joystick would always eventually come off and you'd be playing with a sharp ass piece of plastic.
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start
BB gun wars without even sunglasses on.
Red Dawn, Red Dawn and Red Dawn
First Blood, M*A*S*H*, GI Joe
Watching the original Star Wars in the theater (4 times)
Sleeping on the back window shelf of a Grand Torino while driving on family vacation to Disney Land.
TV Dinners with tin foil on them.
Pull tab cans.
Everyone with a truck in high school had a stocked gun rack in their back window in the school parking lot.
Tote Goat's.
Vuarnet sunglasses with the leather shields.
Those sunglasses with the mirrors on the edges so you could see behind you.
Women with hairy beavers.
The emergence of the woogit.
Losing my virginity with Bobby Brown singing in the background.

Dam fellas thanks for the memories. I fkn love you guys for this.

You missed the point entirely. He's saying that Gen-X couldn't vote in the 1980 election, since even the oldest gen-xers, being born in 1965, would have only been 15 in 1980, and too young to vote. Ergo, if you had voted in that election, you technically meet the age definition for being a Boomer, nothing "narrow-minded" about it.

Actually the point is generations overlap so it can go either way. There is no strict rule. I was born in 1962. Late boomer or X-gen.

A point lost on many in this thread; generations are fast and loose, that's why you have people argue over where the boundaries are.  Generally speaking those in the middle of the bracket are most defined by and define the generation with those towards the gray areas towards the beginning and end of the generation have many of the characteristics of both, they are known as "cuspers".  Late 70's born are an example, they're Gen-X but were young enough to experience both events from both i.e. young enough to have played without supervision before dark and analog phones, but still young enough to be impacted by the digital revolution such as the Internet which most Gen Xers were already adults by the time that hit, and most Millenials were still children.

As for Gen X I think being born in the 80s really blows past that gray area; many people I know born in the 80's don't remember Gen X defining events from the 80s like the Challenger Shuttle explosion, MTV when they actually played music videos, or the fall of the Berlin Wall.  Some have really good memories or was exposed more than others which is why hard drawn lines don't work with generations.  Some people are more plugged in or exposed to defining events, others less so.

If you couldn’t see Star Wars in the theater...

If the Cold War was over before you learned about “duck and cover”...

If Red Dawn and Threads are just movies...

If cable TV and computers have been ubiquitous your whole life...

If you never spent 20 minutes fucking with a pair of rabbit ears on a crappy 13” TV so you could watch Sesame Street on a UHF channel...

If you never made it a life goal to find the secret room in Adventure...

If you never shopped at Chess King...

You’re probably just a Millennial with delusions of grandeur.

I am thinking that tweaking the channel knob on the cable TV box to be halfway between channels so that you see a staticky, squiggly pair of tits should be on that list, too.

A Millennial once asked me if we had porn on the Internet in the "old days."

I explained how we would log into a service provider using our dial up analog lines and find alt.binaries on a Usenet server. After downloading all the text files associated with a specific picture, we would use UUDecode to convert the text files back to a graphic. Opening it, you'd finally see what you got, which was usually a shitty flatbed scan from a Playboy.

He just looked at me with his mouth open.

Kids these days don't know how easy they got it.
Going further back than that, I had to download them from a BBS (uphill, both ways). A text description of the picture was all you got. A single B&W gif took a good 3 minutes to download on a 2400 baud modem, before you could see what you got.

And we was thankful, because some folks didn't have it so good.
