Liberal talking heads kept saying that even the police couldn't stop a AR15 armed active shooter and that a "good guy with a gun" was a myth.

Well take this incident at the Greenwood mall and this one in West Virginia and make them stick that argument where the sun don't shine.

Jesus, some of you really need to shoot more.

I shoot at 45 yards regularly off my deck with all my pistols.  I ring headshots on the steel silhouette without a problem.  If you're the type to stand in one spot on the firing line and shoot at 10 yards, yeah you probably think 40 yards is really fucking hard with a pistol.

It's not an "incredible" distance. It is an unusual distance.

I'm not sure where the idea that you have to be near superhuman to make a hit a distance with a pistol comes from, but it's not true. Hitting a man(let) sized target at 40 yards is not supremely difficult if you have good command of the fundamentals. Useful practice helps you recall those under stress. Hunting and competition help you build familiarity with delivering on the fundamentals under stress.

It seems like this young man came up in a family that took the use of firearms seriously and invested some time and effort learning how to do it correctly.

Everyone doesn't just spazz out and start acting like an idiot when presented with the need to make a shot under stress. Distance and not being directly under assault can actually make it easier to think more clearly in the moment than if you are the one directly taking bullets.

Having the drop on the bad guy...which was almost certainly the case here...is an enormous asset.

This.

I do walk back drills/comps on steel silhouettes out to 100 yards with my peeps regularly. It is a good confidence booster and shows you that hitting at distance with a pistol isn't a far fetched fantasy.

I've got about 80' from that furthest column in the eating area with the good line of sight to the rough spot where scumbag died, which is further back in that vestibule.  If first engagement was at the vestibule opening then it's about 60'.  If Eli was braced at the column nearest the Subway then it looks to be about 36' to the restroom vestibule opening.  120' is still plausible from within the dining area, but not much that jives with the report that he braced against a "post".  Guess we'll just have to wait for an official report, a reenactment, or a video leak.

Still very good shooting to draw, steady, and fire within 15 seconds and hit 8 out of 10.

I can agree it was great shooting regardless of the actual range.  No doubt he was under considerable stress.

Here's something else to consider. He's a relatively young man, and if the reporting is accurate, he's carried for less than three weeks. Barely past the "wally walk" stage.

Indiana doesn't have CCW permits. We have handgun permits, which former Governor Mitch Daniels (Bush's numbers guy) created a lifetime handgun permit circa 2006.

Basically, you need a permit to buy a handgun (all LEO heads sign them without question) , but there are no CCW or other restrictions on how you carry.

I've been out of the country and that handgun permit might have been ammended into our constitution, I believe I heard a few years ago.

I have have some doubts about that.

3 of 4 in my office can carry.  One is a Defender who has a G19 he has never shot yet carries. A damn .mil cop!  Another has 70a and shoots, sometimes and carries less.  Then there is me who shoots every two weeks, dry fires daily, practices my draw and presentation with my carry gun daily.  I am the only gun nut of the 4 of us.  The fourth doesn't give a shit and can't hardly walk because he falling apart physically.

There is this weird movement to infantilize anyone under 30 these days.  Spelling out  "22-year-old", like that matters or that's some kind of low threshold on how old one should be to own a firearm, use a firearm, protect people, eliminate threats, what???

Why the stress on the age of the ccw?  Like 22 years old is a child or something?
View Quote

I like that his age is being stressed. If it was a 55yo ex mil, ex cop they can mentally justify that it's not something your average person can do (remember that liberals tend young) Decades of experience and training is required or something, that's why he could do it and they wouldn't have been able to.

His age hammers home that he's just a regular guy. Hence the backlash from people that know they would have been found lacking and have nothing to point at as to why he's different other than their own shortcomings. The meltdowns over this are glorious.

Even if the range is misquoted, and is 40 feet, 13.3 yards - for a guy who has been carrying for only 3 weeks, against someone less than 15 yards right in front of him firing an AR somewhat in his general direction as fast as he can would rattle the best civilian shooter. This MIGHT be a case of he didn't know enough to BE scared, and went for it, with fantastic results. What do people say who have actually been there about the distance from the columns to that restroom door?
That guy better not have to buy a drink in any bar for the rest of his life.

Weirdo or absent parents, violent video games, and unfettered access to the internet including pornography starting at a young age.

These boys never develop the skills necessary to exist in the real world, and when they come of age and are rejected by the world, a small percentage of them lash out in a murderous, suicidal rage.

I truly believe that is what the current epidemic of mass shootings is all about.  Every one of these shitheads fit the same damn profile.

Seems like the powers at be are more than happy to stand by and watch it happen, as there’s no other greater driving force for their ambitions than mass shooters.

Same accuracy, a snub, revolver, LCP, Glock 42 (less than 10 round capacity) would have been out of ammo and required a reload.

It's absolutely a great idea to shoot targets at long range.  It isn't "train as you fight" because standing stationary and shooting at a nonmoving target that isn't shooting back at you under stress is nothing like "the fight".  If he'd have left that phrase out, I wouldn't have said shit.

What setup did you buy?

You seem to feel attacked, I just want to know what target setup you're using.

Here's something else to consider. He's a relatively young man, and if the reporting is accurate, he's carried for less than three weeks. Barely past the "wally walk" stage.

Another image of the food court I saw posted, with a more normal camera focal length lens

There should be a square column off this pic to the right and the cookie store he shot from is behind and right of this pic. I’ve been there 100s of times. The pics of the food court that have been posted people keep thinking it has to be a column with-in the pic. It’s not.

Train as you fight, cites a steel gong that doesn’t move and doesn’t shoot back.  ROFL.

100% truth.

we shoot steel gongs at 100 yards routinely with our pistols.

train as you fight
fight as you train

Because no one trains with targets that shoot back

This incident as should shut down all the point shooters, and snubby from the sweatshirt pocket posters... but it won't.

I didn't build one, I bought it

It's absolutely a great idea to shoot targets at long range.  It isn't "train as you fight" because standing stationary and shooting at a nonmoving target that isn't shooting back at you under stress is nothing like "the fight".  If he'd have left that phrase out, I wouldn't have said shit.

What moving target setup do you use?

If you built it yourself, please post a thread with instructions.

It's working on fundamentals while shooting at distance.

The fight is the top of the ladder. Every ring you grab is in preparation for that fight.
