The guy is doing it the right way. Keep is simple as possible. Over 10 years ago, did something similar. Took a DRZ400 across Siberia and Mongolia. Think about that trip every day. Afterwards, was going to take off a year a travel around the whole world. Unfortunately, it was 2007, the economy took a dump, and I got married. I would do that.
Did Portland, Or. to St. Louis, Mo. on a CL360. Took my time and managed a few mechanical hiccups along the way. Would have liked better MPG, but it was a 30+ year old bike. Did St. Louis, Mo. to Wash. D.C. up to Boston, Ma. and back to StL. on a 1988 HawkGT(650cc). That was fun too but even worse mileage but better ride. I want to try some longer treks on smaller bikes. I have heard of people using a CT90 for the slow and easy style ride. Seems like it would be a little too slow, much like the ruckus. I think the Grom is a good option. Fuel efficient, but enough get up and go in a pinch. Would need some mods for carrying gear though. Might just fix up my XL100 and see if I can do some short(~1000miles) trips around locally. I just don't have the time. View Quote Time is your most valuable possession. Make the most of it. |

I wish I would've done something like that when I was younger in my 20's.
Never even occurred to me until watching videos on YouTube and reading trip reports on forums. Now I have a young family and other obligations so it'll have to wait till who knows when. A bit of advice to to youngsters - you have a dream - Do it before your life becomes more complex. |

I am going to talk the wife into one of these. She keeps telling me she wants to get a scooter, we will get a scooter. My wife actually wants one. Talked to the wife before she left to get her hair done. We are going to get one when we get back from vacation next month. Talked into it with the idea of loading it in the back of the Ranger, and taking it with us when we want to do a long weekend at the beach. Driving a car at the beach areas around here sucks ass trying to find places to park and stuff. Much easier to get around on a scooter. |

Because it takes him ten hours to cover the 300 miles he does in a day, and that assumes riding flat out and not stopping to eat or rest at fill ups. There's something to be said for being able to ride without having to listen to a bike at redline for hours at a time...a Grom will do 50-55 all day long and doesn't struggle with hills. Also has enough power to get ahead of traffic to move over a lane, something a ruckus won't do with a clean haircut and fresh shave. Still don't see the problem. If I was doing this, it would be to see everything, not just get to the next destination fast. That'll sound great until you hit Kansas and then you'll wish that you had rocket boosters on that thing. |

Can 2 people ride on a Rockus?
Wife is small, and could she legally ride on back behind me with out a motorcycle license? |

Wondering about the suspension travel on a Ruckus or Grom.
I moved from a Honda 250 XL dual sport to a Kymco scooter to get a lower seat height and the magic button aka electric start. (I got old and could not get a leg over the Honda.) That scooter was very good except for the ride, it felt like I was beating my kidney's to death. Now I ride a Yamaha XT 225 dual sport, it has a good ride, is easier, but not easy, to get a leg over and still gets 65 mpg. I wanted a TW 200 but could not find one, besides the seat height is the same as the 225. I'd love to do that ride, but on a comfortable ride. Perhaps the Ruckus or Grom would have an OK ride but they don't look like it. Besides that, the Ruckus looks like it would have high centering problems. Every even year there is the Scooter Cannonball, it crosses the US or goes from Alaska to New Orleans and things like that. People do that ride on Ruckus, other scoots, even old two stroke Vespas and Lambrettas. |

Just went and looked at the Ruckus.
Honda dealer had a nice black one I would have bought on the spot if not for the wife bitching me out if I came home with it. Told him I will buy it after our vacation if they still have it. |

Wife is all excited about the Ruckus now.
May go and buy it tomorrow or Monday while she is working. Do dealers come off the list price much on these things? It's $2600 or so list. |

I am still nervous in traffic on it.
How long does it take to not assume every car or truck is going to run you over? |

I've done Key West on a bike from Indiana. I have also done Indiana to Fairbanks AK 4 times in a Semi. I have done Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay AK once in a Semi and that was enough for me. Is the drive to AK worth it. Yes in every single sense. There are things there that you would never see in the lower 48. Would I do it on a bike? Who know but if I did it I would do it on a dual sport style bike just for the extra ground clearance of the bike.

I am still nervous in traffic on it. How long does it take to not assume every car or truck is going to run you over? View Quote Always assume every other vehicle is going to try and kill you. It is why on a motorcycle my main tactic for staying alive is to twist the throttle and get the fuck away from everyone. Visibility -- being seen -- Is import. Reflective vest is good. Keep your high beams on during the day. Learn to weave in your lane, especially when approaching intersections; the moving lights will attract attention of those in front and behind you. I don't know what good gear is for scooters, but at the very least I would have on jeans and over-ankle boots. For a top look for armored mesh summer jackets; one really saves my ass -- err, elbows -- on a low sped low-side fall. Consider taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation beginner course. They will have a bike for you -- usually 250cc standards or dual sports -- and besides teaching you how to survive on the street, successfully completing the course may exempt you from the motorcycle endorsement road test (it does in Jersey, anyway). |

As long as you follow the PM schedule and don't overload it you should be fine for years. Get some kind of fix-a-flat or patch kit. Maybe carry a spare spark plug, but expecting inspecting it every oil change to see of it is fouling should suffice. Edited, because I'm a dumbass. |
