I've been preparing for SHTF since the 1990's.  My level of urgency rises and falls, but I do believe this country and even this world are on a long term trend toward anarchy, war, famine, and pestilence.  It's mostly because the people running things are a bunch of arrogant idiots.

Been through hurricanes with extended lack of first world Luxuries for extended periods.

People adapt, and the average person is not nearly as feral as as arfcom thinks they are.

We do have a lot of bad apples that need to get culled, for sure, but the problem has festered simply because Democrats protect them. Cut that protection out and we are free to do the needful. El Salvador is doing that now.

On a side note, It's interesting that about 85% of the total prison population are or were drug addicts. Something else we need to deal with.

Things were worse in the 90s than they are now IMO.

Biden’s ATF is a paper tiger compared the Clinton years. At least now most Americans can carry a gun for self defense.

Exactly, constant exposure to news stories about people going insane and murdering whole families for no apparent reason creates biases. In an actual emergency most people just muddle along. They don't usually declare themselves "lord Humongous of the Cul de Sack" and begin demanding tribute of gold, saltpeter and slaves from their neighibors.

IDGAF about DOOM!

If OMGDOOM! is on the horizon, there isn't a thing I can do about it.  The only thing I have control over in this world is myself.  All I care about is protecting my family, providing for my family, raising my kids and making myself better.  In other words, living a happy fulfilled life.

If everyone was focused on those things, Doom wouldn't even be in the equation.

How often did your government steal an election in a coup, and surround the capital with barbed wire and thousands of armed troops, because they feared a revolt ?

Or the president bragging about criminal activities, making unconstitutional laws, because there was no consequences.

Or importing tens of millions of third worlders, in order to destroy stability, and gain more democrat seats in congress ?

Or the attorney general of the USA, speaking about how voter laws are racist and should be ignored?

Or government 35 trillion in debt, and adding another trillion every 3 months?

Openly political criminal prosecutions, where rule of law is tossed out the window.

I’d beg to differ, very much so has happened for the worse, just because your life hasn’t started sucking doesn’t mean millions of others lives haven’t, but I guarantee at some point soon, this tidal wave of shit will pact your own life in some meaningful way. Job loss, some diversity super citizen murders someone you love in a robbery, killed by a illegal drunk driver with a dozen dui convictions the victim / your loved one is blamed and perpetrator is released without bail with a big smile on his face and middle finger towards you, suddenly you can’t afford electricity, or there’s none to buy, your kids teachers decide they are now gay, or should become trans, some loony who can’t be committed burns your church down with people in it, and mobs of supporters cheer them on / protect them, or any one of a thousand other things very common these days decides to take roost above your home.

Normalcy bias is the opiate of the ignorant.  Plus real opiates, of course.

The trend line sucks over the last couple of years.  Paraphrasing runcible, 'If you can't see at this point what's going to happen, thats on you.'

Despair is a sin. So don't despair.  Find people who feel similarly, get together with them, and start organizing and doing contingency planning.  (The guy who offers you a bomb is a Fed.)

This quote from ADM Stockdale is good to put into practice (hat tip @Screechjet .  I know he got banned):
You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

Not doom, just common sense...
We have hurricanes here.  I stacked the plywood I used to board up my windows, marked each one as to the window it fits.  I have a generator.  I have some canned food, freeze dried packs, and a few MREs.
It amazes me how there will be a run on generators and gas cans when a storm approaches, and how many of said generators and gas cans get returned once the storm passes...

I have the means of self defense and more importantly, the training to know how to use the appropriate tools.  To live otherwise is foolish.   Being unprepared for life WROL is equally foolish..

Worse. The conspiracy theories that turn out to be true definitely hasn't helped, but the "get outside and talk to normal people" is the real reason. I think most people who advocate this live in roughly politicaly aligned areas. I talk to people and realize how fundermentaly divided we are as a country.

The hate toward anything that does not follow the narrative if palpable. And frankly I cannot envision a good exit strategy for this. Sure in the 70's the same attitudes were present, but not openly espoused with the same vitriol by middle aged, middled income suburbanites living cushy lives.

A historically an external boggy man could pull us as a nation together, now it will just be another opportunity to blame the other guy. If an impeding unavoidable astroid were to be announced today, the headline would be "______ to blame for cutting NASA funding".

How do you return to normal when generations of moral relativists are raising generations of nihilists?

My belief in “DOOM” has remained pretty steady since 2012-ish. That’s when it became clear to me that the federal government would spend itself to death. Obviously my belief in that has been nothing but reinforced.

However, I do not fall into any of your listed categories. For me it has spurred a serious commitment to self reliance, that includes wealth growth, physical fitness & hardening of my living spaces. It spurred my to do things like start a book collection for important knowledge, install a back-up generator & soon a wood stove, build a pond…

You get the idea. For me doom isn’t some abstract idea that leaves me scouring the internet for bad news or fapping to TEOWAKI or sitting around fretting over things I cannot control. It is not a wet blanket on my enjoyment of today. For me it simply serves as a motivating & inspiring force to do the needful.

Same here. I'm just trying to set myself and my family up with options: Options for food, water, transportation, heat, cooking, etc. Doing my best to stay in shape and up to date on vehicle maintenance and prioritizing purchases I need RIGHT NOW that would def. help in the future DOOM scenario; like chainsaws and other tools. I always buy way more screws and nails than I need for a project so I can save a trip. You get the idea.

In a real bad scenario I wouldn't survive long enough to use all my mags and shoot all my ammo. That's there to outfit and train my kids/grandkids hopefully.

I enjoy homesteading/prepping as a hobby. Same with hunting, fishing, reading. I will not regret all my "prepping" if I never need the preps. The kids and I are having fun and making memories.

doom is relative. if you are a citizen of best korea you have experienced doom your entire life. if you are on the border on either side in urkaine, you are experiencing doom every day, if you are in the trenches it is especially doomful. if you are in gaza you are experiencing doom. if you are a homeless person living in a cardboard box in a drug camp you are living doom.

there is enough doom to go around. if you want real doom its easy to find.

Pretty simple, really. Live a prepared lifestyle, but that doesn't mean you have to live in constant fear. You shouldn't. Live prepared and you really won't have to, although you simply can't prepare for everything. Sometimes you can see things coming, sometimes you can't. It would seem apparent there is a storm coming, but today I woke up, had some chicken fingers, about to go to work, today will most likely be a normal day like any other. If it turns out not to be I'll deal with it.

Wrote a song in the band I was in in high school. One of the lines in the chorus went "they say the world is coming to an end, but knowing me I really don't give a fuck, don't care never have and never will, I'll deal with it when the time comes..."

Do I believe we're heading into hard times, yes. But right now things are ok. At least for me. I will continue to enjoy it while I still can. YMMV.

All of it over reported, duplicated in reports by hysterical news people, sensationalized, propagandized by both Left and Right; and a very specific Black Swan event in a worst case location populated and governed by the least likely to be able to handle it.

And that propensity for over reporting and over sensationalizing is now enshrined in social media. Entire industries have grown up around it...not least of which is Prepper Culture. Which is the heir(and multiplier) to the Survivalist movement of the Cold War, the Militia movement of the 90s and the Zombie Apocalypse of the last 20 years.

There's a continuum between recognition of the need for self reliance(food, water, meds, security) as a mindset and influence on your lifestyle; and a fixation on a possibility of multiple worst case scenarios playing out simultaneously as the default likelihood in the near future.
One is logical, prudent and perfectly healthy. The other, not so much.
That highlights one of the fundamental errors in forecasting: That "X" bad outcome will happen and propagate to the worst case outcome because no one will try to mitigate it.
The Ukraine war was supposed to start a cascade of failures in the food supply chain and result in widespread catastrophic famine...last year. The danger was there, and the consequences could have been brutal, but steps were taken by even incompetent and corrupt governments and corporations because they don't want their entire populations to die off and, as always, there was profit to be made.
No famine.

Should people prep? Hell, even FEMA recommends two weeks worth(minimum) of supplies.
Should you buy entire suites of guns, spare parts and a lifetime ammo supply for all the grandchildren your toddler might someday produce?
...Maybe?

Doom from its source definition means "judgment." Frankly, humanity gets what it deserves. Humanity doesn't care for Truth and how Reality operates. Man has become so disconnected from Reality, Nature, and The Self. We think we can do what we want without consequences. Well, Reality doesn't work that way. Will I be sad for the small few good souls here who are good people? Yes, but humanity is not separate from itself or nature.

I don't fear it but I welcome it. Truth can be loving and caring just as it can be reckoning and chaotic. Force is required to create change. If it causes people to come face to face with The Truth then so be it. The Knowledge has always been out there to prevent this from occurring. People simply ignored it. I don't feel bad for people who ignore The Laws of Nature when they touch a hot stove repeatedly. Sometimes you have to learn through Chaos.

talking points.

i hear people say things were worse in the 70s, or ww2, or here, or there. various parts of society has shown issues occasionally, but when did the government, president, congress, etc be the crazy ones spouting insane things and doing totally destructive things and hurting the country left and right?

never, were in totally new territory. well, 1775 was the last time we were dealing with problems such as these, where the leaders were hostile towards the citizens, passing destructive laws, and didnt give a shit about how it effected us.

honestly, if you really cant see how bad things are right now, how out of control they are, how the people at the top will fight tooth and nail to prevent anyone from stopping them, i really dont know what to say. because its obvious as fuck to me, and very obvious where this country will be in a few more very short years. its going to be ugly. well, its ugly now for tens of millions, and every day it gets ugly for more people.

really hurts me to acknowledge that my country is such a dumpster fire, and really hurts me knowing i spent so many years defending it, only to have things turn to shit for my own grandkids. % wise, the next generation will definately have a worse standard of living than we had.

I've always enjoyed new challenges so the impending doom is almost something to look forward to.

It is pretty much impossible to know what exactly what type of doom will happen and when.

So I take reasonable precautions and make reasonable preparations to try to lessen the impact of what ever comes but at the same time I don't obsess over it.

I'm into my 60s now and plan to enjoy what ever good days I have left. If the hard times get here before I am gone I'll deal with it best that I can and keep on trucking.
