I liked things about both.

Tombstone captured more of the color and dash of boomtowns, but was really corny in the "Heroicness" of the Earps.

The Old West dialogue was excellent in Tombstone, and completely lacking in Wyatt Earp.

Wyatt Earp characterized Earp better as a cold, calculating and morally ambiguous man, but the set design and costuming was out of a 50s oater.

Doc Holliday was Kilmer's best role, and made the movie.

Dennis Quaid played a much more accurate and realistic Holliday.

The romance between Earp and Josie was handled better in Wyatt Earp. Joanna Going was more age appropriate(and slutty)

The Vengeance Ride was pretty well done by Costner, and a disaster in Tombstone.

I wish you could shuffle both like a deck of cards.

That pretty well sums it up.

Tombstone is a better movie.

Wyatt Earp is a better film.

I like them both for different reasons......

I'm shocked - shocked, I say - that there are 45 people here who have even seen Wyatt Earp. I tried to watch it once. Turns out, Kevin Costner was in it, so I had to stop.

Tombstone isn't perfectly accurate, but it's probably one of the best movies ever, certainly one of the best historical/action/western flicks. Almost as good as Young Guns II.

Tombstone’s cast is superior and their performances made it the superior of the two. A lot of talent that worked unselfishly to make an entertaining and memorable film.

That is a great movie.

Sharon Stone is completely irrelevant to it-even though it was supposed to be her vehicle.

Tombstones weakest act was the the Vengeance Ride. The move had switched directors to George Cosmatos...who directed Cobra

Some of you... This thread makes me fear the future of this country. Seriously, Is this how you vote? You are given two choices and you give me a movie that wasn't on the list? I predict voting will go this way

I didn’t see Cheeseburger in the poll. Definitely my favorite. What this has to do with True Grit I have no idea except it was the best.

Tombstone by a mile, Costner's best Western was Free Range with Duval and Annette Benning (yum)
Outlaw Josie wales for the win ,even though I watch all three repetitively when they are on

Not a huge fan of Kostner but damn Open Range was really a masterpiece. He was perfect in that movie and role.

Agree Clint Eastwood had more and better Westerns than anybody. He was great in True Grit, too!

I think Tombstone is easier to watch, it just flows better and has a comedic aspect to keep it rolling. Wyatt Earp seemed to drag on and on. If I want to watch a western that is on forever then I’ll watch Lonesome Dove, which is a fantastic mini series/movie.

Great series but I enjoyed the Lonesome Dove books even more. The mini series had great casting, location, costumes, dialog, acting. They even ride the herd through Arkansas where the best movie True Grit was set!

Best Gun fight IMHO is in Open Range. Brutal!

Yeah that seemed far more realistic than most. Open Range is one of the all time best. Classic.

For some reason,  i know Tombstone could never have been made without kurt Russel, but he did very little for me in Tombstone.   And I am a huge Kurt Russel fan.   Honestly,  I think it might have been his moustache - looked goofy as hell to me.  I could never get past it.

Val Kilmer is amazing and steals every scene he is in.

Many great performances by great actors but it would have faded into near obscurity if Val Kilmer was not in it.

I grew up in the Gila Valley, Arizona.

To the South of it is Mt. Graham.

One time as a teen I was up there with my Dad.

We were on the south side looking over the "Sulphur Springs Valley".

My Dad pointed to a house at the base of the Mt, near Fort Grant.

He said, "son thats the Hooker ranch".  I asked him why Hookers would have a ranch in the middle of nowhere. He said, not those hookers, but Mr Hooker.  told me thats where Doc Holliday stayed for awhile.

What a cool memory of my Dad.

I never even though this would be a question. Tombstone is probably the best western ever made after the classic western era. Wyatt Earp is a......... movie I generally forget exists, to put it nicely.

Sometimes there are two movies made about certain people and certain events.  Sometimes both have redeeming qualities.  Sometimes we need to realize we got two gifts.

Stephen Lang did the best acting job out of anybody in either movie. Dude disappeared into Ike Clanton. Actually, I think the real Ike Clanton may have even played himself in that movie.

I watched both recently, and except for a couple of scenes, I forgot how bad The Costner movie was.

This is like Armageddon vs Deep Impact. While Tombstone/Wyatt Earp were released a little further apart, they were still too close together. Deep Impact is a good movie, but Armageddon is better in almost every way. Had there been 2 years between the two Deep Impact would have been remembered as a much better movie.
View Quote
"Armageddon" was a typical Michael Bay cartoon. While neither film is an award winner, "Deep Impact" is a far better movie.

Sometimes one is just better than the other, like Tombstone is better than Wyatt Earp (watched the latter last night, by the way).
