Awesome video, OP!

I have a tiny coop and it's surrounded by a chain link fence. I have welded wire fencing over the top to prevent birds of prey from getting in. Weasels, not so much.

Thats actually quite common behavior for hawks. watch some videos of falconers catching hawks.

We have a pair of Kestrals that nest in the box i put up. have come the last three years. Never saw a pair of kestrals catch so many field mice.

I saw 8 hawks in a 1/4mi stretch 20 mins ago.

very unusual for hawks to group together. Very common for turkey vultures to group together. very common for people to confuse the two and post abou tit.

I'll go get pictures tomorrow and you can tell me if I am wrong. They are all through there every day.

Yes and no...I have seen some stupid justification when it comes to prosecuting people for protected species crimes.

Two that I know of personally;

Guy new to trapping leaves his bait exposed, Hawk saw the bait lands gets caught in the trap. Someone calls the cops. Hawk is set free apparently unscathed. Next thing the guy knows he is in federal court being charged with a felony. 3 years and 50k later the guy gets the FED DA to reduce charges to a Misdemeanor.

Guy legally poisoning wild dogs; all of a sudden has 3-4 dead hawks around his property, same thing someone calls the DNR/police. Must have given the DA a BJ b/c all he ever got was civil fines but he paid right around 10k in civil fines.

They do that when they get caught on the ground by a bigger critter. If he had tried to pick it up by hand it would have attacked with its feet. I found a kestrel with a broken wing that did that to me-and yes, it hurts.

Good job of handling him. I expected to see the shovel smashing the hawk at some point which would have been a "holy shit I can't believe he did that" moment. Raptors are Federally protected so hurting, maiming, harassing or killing them means you WILL deal with the Feds and it WILL cost you big $$$$$. Not good!

Whether the hawk escaped unharmed is not relevant to those humorless fellers at US Fish and Wildlife. You'd better have a good explanation for the fence wire hawk trap.

This is an interesting thread. Most likely no fish cops will visit, but there's always one that needs to make an example of a citizen, so watch your chickens and your own six.

The fence is just keeping the chickens out of the back door of the barn. I guess the chicken ran over there in the fight and the hawk got stuck.

Their is no trap of any kind involved.

The point is that the fence is rolled up into a cylinder. That doesn't like a plausible barricade to the barn, and it's odd that a chicken would find itself inside.

now any wire you have could be considered a hawk trap?

first of the video it starts out flat up against the wall. he moves it to try and get the hawk scooped up and away from the door and it rolls up
Just had a good laugh at the thought of what would have happened if the hawk got through that doorway. the S would have really HTF lol

I dont understand why they are protected. sure seems like a bunch of them around
just as much of a nuisance as coyotes but you cant do a thing about them

friend heard this. so he got some guinea and they are good alarms for when people show up

all he got out of it is a guinea with a bad leg now...

losing a few chickens a week right now...

they have evn been bombing the chicken house. chickens are all freaked out and not laying at all
im not sure whats going on this year but the hawks and vultures and other winged meat eaters have been out in numbers
like I have never seen before

Interesting. We're on the coast, and have a pretty good size predatory bird population based on the amount of birders we have around here. We haven't lost a single chicken (knock on wood) since we introduced those noisy ass guineas to the herd. We had a rooster too, but I got tired of watching him rape chickens all day. He became tamales.

Before, I had hawks nail chickens through the coop wire. It was bad. There would be 3 or 4 red tails visible at any given time. Some of the chickens still have PTSD and don't produce.
