3 months ago I sold a car for a family member, sale was online. Buyer is out of country, All over the phone. Car is a rare collectible car. I hold the car and the title untill I have payment and it's clear. He wired the money to the family member direct 10000.00. 2 weeks go by and no money In their account. Ask the guy to follow up and he sends me the wire receipt , he sent the money to someone else, his mistake.
It took a week but we got the payment I held it a week, no issues. He sent a truck to pick up the car, and it left. I kept the title untill he could give me a address I could send to him certified mail. I never heard from him. Yesterday he contacted me, didn't mention the missing title. Tells me he accidentally wired the money to my family member again 3 weeks ago and could they return it. I would think no one would be so stupid to wire the wrong people money twice in 3 months.. Is he just dumb or is this some stupid time consuming way to launder money. I still have the title to the car. Edit 1. Car was a old Mercedes, in rough shape. The orignal money was transfered, and removed from the account. Real cash. This was over 3 months ago. Transfer was done through wire. I have never heard of being able to reverse a wire after 3 months. |

they get you to wire them back 10k and then they claim fraud/ reverse charges on original...
any of that shit where they send you extra and you pay their shipper or anything should immediately raise your hackles. at the very least i would talk to a bank manager, cops might be an idea too. |
Why on earth would you sell a car to a foreign buyer with a money wire, and let a third party pick it up?
Your car’s probably stripped down and sold off for parts by now. They don’t care about the title. If the money actually hit your account, I would assume there’s some way they’re going to initiate a chargeback or it’s going to bounce. They’ll claim fraud or that they didn’t initiate the wire and you’ll be left with no money and no car. |
I thought it was gonna be the truck from Sanford & Son.
Get the money out of the account. In fact close it if you can. |
In another week or so the bank is going to call you and tell you it was a fraudulent transaction and you’re out the money.
It’s really a rather common scam. |
Wait 90 days. Wire transfer from a hacked account. Your going to get a charge back in it anyways. Title was irrelevant as it’s out of the country now or it’s still local and in pieces.
No collector is going to spend 5-10k shipping a car overseas that worth 10k. Shipping used to be cheap, no more. The minute he said it went to the wrong person you should have known this was a scam. |

Tag for outcome .
I also figure the bank is gonna soon say there is no money there , and will probably want some for their inconvenience . |
Foreign buyer should've been a clue. Only sell face to face and meet at the bank the money is being withdrawn from.
Not transferring the title till after the money is not only in my account but fully clears after 30 days. Too many scams. Money can go into an account via checks and MO's but then found to be fraudulent. Wait till the cash fully clears. Then it's yours. Sorry for the wait but that's the way it is now.

This is literally the standard foreign buyer with shipping agent scam. It is so well known that people make jokes and memes about it. It's like the Nigerian Prince of car selling.

Your money and your car are gone and even closing the account wiil do nothing for you

You should have given the tow operator a green 1973 AMC Gremlin in rough shape instead of the Mercedes.
Damn dude, how old are you? This is some shit my senile grandma would fall for. Although, even she would call me before doing something like that.
Edit - There is no "return" money. In the end, you will see he never actually sent a legitimate transfer in the first place, which means you have $0. He's hoping you're stupid enough to "refund" him $10,000.00 (which was never sent), so he gets your car and makes $10Gs. |
I hate when people think these dudes are legit with money wires and what not.
Cash in hand or fuck off. Don’t trust anyone these days. |
90+ days since the transfer doesn’t mean you’re in the clear and in this case it likely only means the money hasn’t been found to be stolen yet.
Sounds like a twist on the old overpayment scam. Now that he has your "trust," he has "accidentally" sent you another 10K. You refund it, and this time he reverses his wire.
Don't engage in this. He probably gets "free" cars this way. Ignore him or tell him your bank advised he takes it up with them. |
You now have no car and will be 10k lighter in the wallet. Good job.
OP… when you say you have the money in hand, from where? Your bank, a western union, or someplace else?
Edit 2 in op.
If anyone has any banking experience besides they read in a chain email once wants to give their opinion I'm open |
Did the 3rd wire (accidentally sent it again one) actually deposit?
You guys need to be in communication with the bank ASAP |
How does one spoof a wire transfer? OP said it arrived in his account.
I didn't think a wire was something that could be falsified. |
After all the years this shits been going on! And with all the publicity, stories, and jokes! I can't believe someone fell for this shit! Especially an arfommer.
Cash money, and in person transaction or GFL! |

It could be something they try a charge back, but not sure. I sold a 68 Charger via wire transfer, and shipped it to Australia with no issues. |

The only thing that prevents these things is cash. And verify the cash real before releasing the car and/or title.
Yes wired money can be revered with a "SWIFT recall'. Your best bet is if you can locate the tow operator and see if he happens to still have your car. If he happens to have it just straight up steal it back. |

Quoted: Edit 2 in op. If anyone has any banking experience besides they read in a chain email once wants to give their opinion I'm open View Quote I'm not an expert but I have sold a 50k car through wire transfer where I never talked to the buyer except text and email. 3rd party truck driver sent by buyer to get the car. Buyer probably was foreign but the bank was a PNC out of Philadelphia. I knew the branch manager at my bank very well. She suggested we open a separate account to receive the wire. Then move the money into my regular accounts and close the wire. She told me if they got this wire from that bank then it was legit. There was a very small chance there was some way a wire can be reversed very soon after it is requested, like if there's a claim of a mistake so that's why we moved it. IMO if you got a bank to bank wire it's legit and you're fine. I don't think I'd be just sending back the erroneous 10k. I'd probably open an account and compartmentalize it and give it some time. If the money stays and is real and the buyer gets serious with lawyer talk then maybe you take it serious. |
