Got by the Museum today for a few minutes in the vault.  This is our Sauer 38H with light attachment.  It was supposed to be used by Himmler's guards.  I don't recall if any others like this are known in other collections.

It was a total surprise when it came to our Museum in the late 1980s.  In those days, Army Museums put out excess lists for other facilities to pick from and we built our excellent small arms collection by asking for almost anything interesting.  This was just listed as a 7.65mm German pistol and holster.  We figured we'd get a PPK or something, maybe an upgrade, and at least a free holster for something.  The uniform question when the box was opened was...."what the hell is this thing?"  We came to accept our good fortune quickly though.

Forgot to include a photo of the holster, obviously unique to this beast.  We loaded it with batteries to see if it worked after receiving it and it was pretty surprising.  It projected a 50 cent sized spot at 20 or 25 feet that was fairly bright.  Not exactly laser beam quality but not bad for the 1940s.

Yes, not meant for area illumination but a spot for aiming.

Ask any Boomer about the yellow light, with numerous dark voids that was on their genuine GI or Boy Scout flashlight.

Bulbs & battery tech were awful back then.

that big black circle in the middle & would only light up 20 or so feet.. or the big 6V battery light that'd light up further.. ugh. I'm completely spoiled with led flashlights!
