We had a Bawk pilot who had a 182, used it to fly to both drill and his DC-8 UPS job.

Without getting into details that could get me in trouble, more than one federal LE unit has armed Blackhawks. I'm not talking about DAPs or anything like that, but window mounts with either 60's or 240's on swing arms. They seem to prefer mounting solutions that allow them to swing the guns in when not in use so as not to alarm the sheeple, but make no mistake if "them soup bois" are bringing a hawk full of dudes wearing Crye stuff, they will probly have belt guns in the crew chief window.

And of course they can always rely on NG or DOD assets if it's a significant enough event.

We did the shotgun training at sea. Customs or somebody recently seized a Panga and we took turns towing and shooting it's engine. M16 warning shots at distance, then pulled in close for the sabot slugs. 19 year old me had a bunch of experience with the 870 so I got to do the shooting. Good times. This is from the cutter focsle not from a whirlybird. My buddy qualifed with an M14 from an HH60.

Depends on the circumstances.

A drug load coming from down south ?  Probably just maintain contact  and call in other air assets because the 182 has to land eventually.

A plane heading into restricted airspace like the security zone around  a crowded Super Bowl stadium would justify a more aggressive response.

CBP air and marine have SCAR -Hs for taking out engines. Usually for boats though.

The Coast guard has shotguns with slugs and Reflex sights and Robar .50 BMG Rifles for the same tasks. In fact the USCG has an outboard engine used to qual with the slug guns.

What's unusual about that?  They are 100 times better than bulky non-inflatables, especially for that job.

Id go with belt mounted ones, but that's just personal preference because they work better with plate carriers and rifles and such

You'd be wrong.  Friend was the JAG officer on call on 9/11, she walked in the door and the first thing the General asked her was what his legal parameters for use of force were.  Those are now more clearly delineated so he doesn't have to wait to ask JAG.  Especially when you have a designated TFR.  Remember, there were F16's prepared to RAM jets on 9/11 because they didn't have ammo for their guns, now they do if they're on air defense alert.  And you can bet any TFR has somebody within intercept range on air defense duty.

Yup, the F15 that intercepted that hijacked plane in WA in 2018 had live ordnance.

Could the Hawk fly above the 182 and use it's down draft to "steal" the 182s air?  I.e. ruin it's aero lift?

The reverse is even more true.  It would be easier to shoot the blackhawk out of the sky at that distance than the Cessna with any given small arm.

Once the blackhawk started taking fire it would have to disengage anyway. It can't stay there.

And suppose the plane just never answered and ignored them.

Would someone in the national guard truly give an order to shoot a civilian plane down over a densely populated urban area with machinegun fire? Would they even be authorized to give that order?

I just doubt it.  A terrorist using this tactic will most likely succeed because at the end of the day, nobody will make that decision, or it would be made too late to matter anyway.

This exercise is a publicly visible deterrence. A show of force for football fans.

If it wasn't, would they really reveal their TTP?

If hadji was going to do this, he wouldn't come with just one plane either. It would be five or six at the same time.

Against a Cessna, normal rifle fire from an AR of some sort would probably do the trick just fine. There isn't much material in most of the plane that would stop a bullet from hitting the pilot or important controls/parts.

Wow. No.

A Blackhawk can take quite a bit of damage and keep going. They have armor upgrades. The pilots and crew are armored too. You're also not going to be shooting up a Blackhawk and survive very long. Between their own gunners and the accompanying Helicopter it wouldn't last long.

And anyone in command of an aircraft that is tasked with protecting life will absolutely order a shot once a threat becomes clear. Or the gunner will just do it himself. Soldiers aren't cops they worry about the priority of life, not liability.

A damaged cesna crashing MIGHT kill 10 people in the middle of an urban area. Crashing into a stadium? Way more. At the point you're shooting down planes you're mitigating casualties, not preventing them.

There were multiple blackhawks around Kansas City during the days leading up to the Super Bowl Parade.

Too bad they didnt get the green light to take out the car that ran through the cyclone fencing and all over the parade route. Although he was about to find out some other people were going to.

There's almost no limit to LE firepower anymore. I remember seeing some Texas state boats that looked straight out of act of valor.
The DPS boats that patrol the Rio Grande are pretty cool.
