You're kind of late to be making another 2 to 4 year "investment" in training/schooling.  Better to just become a wage slave and try to make $15/hr digging ditches part time or whatever.

I don't believe you when you say you can't get a better job.  My wife has no education past high school.  She works 2 jobs.  One of them is an office clerk at an HVAC company 40 hours a week.  It pays her the most and provides her health insurance.  The other is for a travel agency.  The pay is shit  and she works there on weekends and most weeknights after her normal job for a few hours but she (and sometimes me) get lots of free international travel.  She makes over 2 twice what you do between them.  No physical stuff required, just filing, phone calls and typing. There is no way the best you can do is 20K.  Hell remote telemarketing jobs pay better than that.  Have you actually been trying or just been lax and not looking?

I am not knocking you for that if so. I am lazy too and I should be looking to step up myself.

Get a job waiting tables on the weekends, decent money if you are reasonably sociable and can work hard.   Think of a plan B for when not if you burn out.

Medical transcription from home?  Not great pay but you already work at a hospital so might have a foot in the door, try working your network.

I'm guessing you live in rural WV, and I'm guessing that you're lucky to have even found the job you've got, even if it does only pay $20k/yr.

I hate to say it, but you're probably going to have to move. You need to get your income way up, and that's hard to do without living in an area where A LOT of companies are hiring.

No, I'm saying I don't have creditt card debts, don't have a mortgage, don't owe banks or loan sharks beyond my student loans.

I still have them because the last 15 years have been tight financially and interest is a cast iron bitch. It happens.

Now, I got the loans and degree in history because I believed the lies that high school guidance councilors and my parents told me about get a degree, it doesn't matter in what, your loans will pay for themselves. C'est la vie.

You need to get a real job. If there are none in your area, move.

If you don't take care of your student loan debt, when you go on Social Security they'll deduct a payment from your SS check every month until it's paid off.

Personally, I'd look at selling my house, buying an RV to live in, and going where the work is. Seems as good an option as hanging out making minimum wage at your age is.

Good luck with it.

You're not screwed.  Better off than one of our sales guys at work - makes about $80k to $100k based on commissions.  Is 51.  Got divorced last year, has 2 kids both under 12, paying child support, paying alimony.  Very little left in 401k.  $35K truck loan.  Tons of credit card debt from living it up.  $250K mortgage (he drained most of his half of his 401k to pay lawyers and put down payment on house).

Gonna take him a while to get out of that one.

Wanna trade places with him?

How is your work ethic and would consider going the FSA route?

This from an earlier thread today, you're probably eligible for some welfare benefits and if you can't do certain jobs because of physical limitations, disability as well.

Go to your local workforce center and see if the state does grants for low income folks to attend a truck driving school.  You will make at least double what you are right now, even with the bottom feeders like Swift and CR England. Or if you're lucky, or want to relocate, you could make very decent money doing oilfield or fuel hauling work.

You can start saving now. Save everything you can. It's not too late. Pay the minimum to student loans. Every extra penny goes into savings. You can do it. Get a second job; get a better job; start a business.

Open a traditional IRA for you (and your wife). Max investment in both yearly. Mutual funds and high dividend yield stock combos. Reinvest dividends into accounts.

At your age, you are a way along the road of life.

You have obviously made quite a number of significant decisions along that way.

It would appear, from your present circumstances, that not very many of them have been wise.

I have no idea what advice to offer you which will enable you to change that pattern.

You have incurred $30,000 worth of debt, to get a degree which has no market value, and you have pissed away every dollar you have made so far in life.

I am baffled.

Good luck.

OP, how did you end up with a paid off house?

Your car may be paid off, but it is deteriorating and I don't see how you will be able to afford to replace it.

You are doing okay with controlling spending, but you desperately need to improve your income.  You have a useless degree, so ignore it.  What can you do to make money?  You're not too old to get training as long as it is toward a concrete, realistic goal.

You have no retirement savings.  That's rough.  You need to be maxing that thing out, soon.

If your financial problems seem insurmountable, remember there are guys out there 10 years older that are in your shoes, except they don't have a paid off house.

43, zero savings? Not even a 401(k)? With a BA in History and a job that pays less than $2K/month?

Christ, minimum wage in OR is $10.25/hr. You could come to Oregon and get a raise working full time at Taco Bell.

Get a teaching certificate and a job teaching history to middle- or high-school kids and your wage goes up by 50% at the very least AND you get a pension. Not to mention summers off for a second job or whatever.

You're either fucking with us or fucked unless you change something.

1.  Sell house and as much shit as you can.
2.  Pack car with remaining shit.
3.  Move somewhere with a strong economy and rent cheap.
4.  Find job.
5.  Start from scratch with a chance to succeed.

Do as as countless millions have done before you from the '49ers, to the dustbowl refuges and the depression era travelers.  Move to somewhere that isn't dying.

And to paraphrase Sam Kinison...West Virginia is full of SAND!

Seriously though, 40hrs a week

There are plenty of jobs that pay over 20k/yr with a BA in history. I don't know why you all assume it's a worthless degree. If nothing else, get what you need to be a teacher. Almost anything makes more than 20k/yr.

A degree in anything + some kind of experience can land you a gov job. Most degrees just show that you can accomplish something with a set standard, kind of like boot camp in the military.

You can't do this (presumably), but plenty of high paid analysts have history degrees. I know dudes that spent 5 years in the military doing intel shit, got a history degree while they were in, and jumped ship to an agency or contracting gig.

Do what others have said, look for a job even if you have to move, don't lie but make your resume sound good. Also contrary to arfcom millionaires, your degree is worth something. You just aren't utilizing it right now.

Good luck brother. You're doing better than a lot of people.
