There are plenty of jobs that pay over 20k/yr with a BA in history. I don't know why you all assume it's a worthless degree. If nothing else, get what you need to be a teacher. Almost anything makes more than 20k/yr. A degree in anything + some kind of experience can land you a gov job. Most degrees just show that you can accomplish something with a set standard, kind of like boot camp in the military. You can't do this (presumably), but plenty of high paid analysts have history degrees. I know dudes that spent 5 years in the military doing intel shit, got a history degree while they were in, and jumped ship to an agency or contracting gig. Do what others have said, look for a job even if you have to move, don't lie but make your resume sound good. Also contrary to arfcom millionaires, your degree is worth something. You just aren't utilizing it right now. Good luck brother. You're doing better than a lot of people. View Quote |

Get your cdl and at least double if not triple your income. There should be a shitload of decent to high-paying cdl jobs in the northern part of WV around the Marcellus. Or just haul freight around if you can't tolerate any physical task.

This is unreal. Over 30k for a degree that gets you all that.

Also this is exactly what you should do.
Go into teaching history. Move to the best job you got.cash out your house for the next house you get near your job. Take care of your body till you get your teacher pension. That's it. In Texas a teacher starting at 43 would get pension at.....ummm at 62. Nailed it. There you go. Cangrats bruh. Higher pay and pension. Your welcome. |

Making under $10/hr I would say move to a better state, start working at a fast food place and in a year of being a good worker at least make shift manager pay. Go to work for Sheetz probably if I were in your situation. Fully serious.

You're actually in better shape than a lot of people. Being in WV doesn't help and won't - presume you're there for a reason perhaps your mom.
You need to get your expenses down to the absolute minimum while also increasing your earnings anyway you can. Throw all money beyond bare bones expenses towards the debt and that might could be paid off in 24 to 36 months. Then put 25% of your income into a Roth after the loan is paid and you have a very solid chance of being in good shape in 15 to 20 years. Any increase in earning between now and then will aid in that and decrease expected timelines. WV is wonderful... But there's not much there anymore. |

The thing is, I'm happy.
I've made good choices and I've made bad choices. I've never been arrested, never done drugs, never got married (or divorced), never had kids (so no child support). I walked away from what I wanted to do to take care of my mom because I was taught you do for family. I like where I live and have little desire to move. I got a worthless degree and took out too much in loans. I worked the real job and hated every minute of time I was in pointless meetings and cubicles. Now I realize that working just for money so I could buy toys sucked, now I work just to pay the bills. Now, I'm willing to work something else, but I have serious health issues I can't work around, so pretty much physical work is out of the question. I don't have the time or money to go back for a different degree, I've been in management and I'm not good at it (a man's got to know his limitations). I'm not a salesman. I'm just curious how bad of a shape I'm in for the future and what I can do at this point. EDIT: Just checked and my credit score is 549. But I have no outstanding accounts to pay on to show I'm capable of paying outstanding accounts. |

No wife, no kids, paid off house.
Not a big deal. Arfcom likes to think that Social Security will go away. Reality is that politicians on both sides of the aisle are unlikely to cut their own throats with seniors (who by and large vote). So they'll just fund it by raising the cap on the salary tax. You'll have enough to eat, go camping, go hunting, shoot, pay for a small fishing boat, and generally hang out and live a comfortable life in retirement. You won't be jet setting around the world, but c'est la vie. |

If you like where you live and are set then it's not too tough. Having the house paid off is golden. Check to see if there are any property tax rebate programs in W VA for low income folks. Selling the house and all that, some people jump to that all the time.
You need some extra money to boost up emergency savings first and foremost. Part time job or something extra PRONTO to build up a few thousand in case your car needs fixing or something comes up. There have to be jobs available to boost your income, get in touch with any job placement programs available in the area or surrounding area. You're a college educated person with just student loans. See what you would need to move into teaching, there may be some loan forgiveness programs to teach in your area if it's that depressed. People don't get how easy it is to get behind when you take on the stuff you did. You have a house and a college degree. You are a lot further ahead than tons of people, don't waste it. A little motivation and work and you'll be fine. |

If you don't want to move to where the jobs are, then I'm kind of at a loss as to what to suggest. Regarding your degree, is teaching history a possibility that interests you? Is it possible in your area, without moving? It certainly pays better than $20k/yr. Failing that, you could always get your CDL and be an over the road trucker for a while. You'll be gone a lot, but...you don't have a wife and kids to worry about - it's just you. And you can live pretty much wherever you want. And if you REALLY don't mind being gone a lot, you can easily quadruple your current income. And more. |
