Tonight I learned that just because a SFP+ transceiver is 1Gb/10Gb and it plugs into my Supermicro router and works with Untangle doesn't mean that it will upon reboot when it starts back up

Good thing the WAN was still up so that I could get in with the Untangle Command Center and set the interface to 1000 Full Duplex so that it works upon reboot.

Lesson learned...the hard way...as usual

Hate it when that happens........

It's extremely stable now and I like it more than pfSense.  This was my fault as I've never messed with SFP+ stuff and had no idea what I was doing

I had it for 4 months and the uptime was 93 days when I decided to reboot it to test something (don't remember what it was).  I have applied 2 updates now and neither have required a reboot nor had any effect on traffic while it was being applied.

I like it so much that I bought a 5 year subscription to Home Pro.

Yeah screw the reliability, increased security, and lack of maintenance (including the extra cost of replacement batteries when they die) that comes with using wired devices

Not very. But even if it was, it's in my master bedroom walk-in closet...which itself is off the master bath. It could sound like a data center in there, for all I give a shit.

I like them quite a bit so far, but I don't really have anything else to compare it to (at least first hand).

To me, 4k video on a security camera is a great way to waste hard drive space, and not much else. I seriously doubt the camera optics on most of these are anywhere near good enough to make 4k anything other than a way to needlessly generate files that are way bigger than they need to be, given the quality. But...I dunno. Kinda talking out of my ass. Call it a hunch.

I think the pictures look great, and the IR is (at least to me) pretty incredible at night.

The "integrated into the ecosystem" bit is kinda nice. The video is stored on the existing Gen2 CloudKey, which doubles as an NVR with a 1TB drive (which I'm pretty sure can be upgraded, if'n ya really want). Not bad for $200, as sort of a "do it all" kind of appliance.

No complaints thus far, especially when just using it to view the live feed. You can obviously do a lot more in the browser, but if you just want to watch the live feed, scroll through the timeline or the triggered "events", it seems fine.

Note: I don't use it much, as I'm basically always on a real computer (and I bring a laptop with me everywhere I go). So take it for what it's worth. But it seems a'ight to me.

I dunno, since I don't have a standard G3 to compare it to. It's literally hanging upside down (included hard-ceiling mount configuration from the link above) under the overhang of my garage, with the included mount (it's screwed straight into the soffit). I'd take a picture, but it's dark and raining like a bitch right now.

For those curious on night time performance of the cameras:

This is the G3 Flex on my driveway. Even though it looks like it, there are no porch or driveway lights on. That's all IR. It's dark outside, and there's rain pouring down (enough that I need to adjust the motion sensitivity, because it's generating events one after the other right now).

And this is a G3 Dome (technically an indoor camera, but it's so well protected where it's at, I don't give a shit) looking at my front entry. Again, no porch light - that's just the IR.

I'm not overly sold on the Ubiquiti integrated ecosystem. It should also be noted that Unifi Video and Unifi Protect are two different applications which only share a common hardware component in the cameras. With Unifi Protect, you cannot currently have a NVR other than the one built into the CloudKey Gen2 which also means you can't do RAIDed drive arrays nor can you handle more than about 20 cameras (which is honestly fine for the average home owner). Unifi Video allows one to bring their own NVR but doesn't get as much support...I'm honestly surprised UBNT has released two minor updates since January as they kinda had a "no further development" attitude in November. Only real complaint you ever typically hear about Unifi-Video is the inability to add non-Ubiquiti cameras to the system.

Here's a Unifi-Video system I built for my in-laws so they can keep an eye on the barn (these cameras have recorded several dozen lambs being born this year) and if you note the timestamps, they were taken tonight (though I don't know why the hell one of the G3-Micro's is looking at the wall it's sitting on).

I got to check in on my switch in my parent's attic today as I added an AP (why is it I never get to go into the attic when it's not hot) for my dad's man-cave.

Fun note, Avigilon actually sells a 8K camera...with overhead it pulls a solid 50 Mbps when viewing at full resolution.

My next hacking project involves cobbling together an automated method of continually pulling the video off the Gen2 CloudKey (I can SSH to it...) and getting it onto my NAS (itself, another project).

I'm very new at this, so this is my very basic setup.

It's a very temporary thing as I need to eventually take the rack down, put some drywall up, then put the rack back up and then I'll get all my cables connected to the patch panel.  For now, it's just one port for my desktop and one for the living room television.  It's in an unfinished part of the basement.

Switch isn't anything fancy, just a TP-Link TL-SG1024.  Ran CAT-6 from two points in the finished part of the basement with some conduit for most of it as a lot ran near and across romex lines.  There's one set of two drops coming from the dining room on the first floor and one set of four drops coming from the living room on that floor too.  Trying to run anything to/from the second floor is too much of a challenge for me at this point so I'm just using a wifi extender up there for now.

I did something (sort of) like that with my Unifi controller. I wanted to get the configuration backups that the controller automatically generates offloaded to my NAS. I did it by mounting a folder in /media to an SMB share on the NAS, and then scheduling a bash script to rsync the backups over to it. It would have been easier and more instantaneous to just configure the controller to plop the backups directly into the mounted folder, but I lost patience trying to get that to work. Admittedly, my Unifi controller is running on an Ubuntu VM, so I'm not sure what can be done with whatever stripped-down version of Linux the Cloud Keys are probably running.

This weekend I ran cat7 from the router all the way to the other corner of the house up a flight. The 2 foot thick rock walls don't allow wifi to go very far. I found out that how well you connect the wires to the jack makes all the difference. When I the connections were good I'd get over 800mbs with an internet speed test (vive la fibre). Otherwise only about 90mbs.

I had to drill through two feet of rock wall too. That was fun.

I’m not sure what exactly you mean by “how well  connect the wires to the jack” but an inexpensive Ethernet cable tester can save you lots of headache.

A patch panel is a permanently installed termination point for multiple cables on the central “hub” end. As opposed to just having a bunch of Ethernet cables hanging out of the wall.

Generally they’re labeled so you know which is which is going where. You then install short jumpers from it to a network switch or other central device.

The patch panels I've used are all punch down connections, so it's easy to run cable without buying exact length cables. Then run a shorter length to switch.

The cat5 in my house wasn't long enough to run to where  mounted my rack, so I did a patch panel and then bought premade cables to run the short distance from panel to rack.

Also it is better to punch down a cable in a patch panel than to put a RJ45 male connector on the end of the cable.

Something about maintaining pair twist right up to the point of termination.

And horizontal cable (the run from the patch panel to the jack) is made of solid wires so it is not good to bend them and risk kinking them.

Jumper cables on the other hand are made of stranded wires and are more flexible.
