Tonight I learned that just because a SFP+ transceiver is 1Gb/10Gb and it plugs into my Supermicro router and works with Untangle doesn't mean that it will upon reboot when it starts back up
Good thing the WAN was still up so that I could get in with the Untangle Command Center and set the interface to 1000 Full Duplex so that it works upon reboot. Lesson learned...the hard way...as usual |

I had it for 4 months and the uptime was 93 days when I decided to reboot it to test something (don't remember what it was). I have applied 2 updates now and neither have required a reboot nor had any effect on traffic while it was being applied. I like it so much that I bought a 5 year subscription to Home Pro. |

@subnet how do you like the unifi cameras? They seem overly expensive for 1080p
I think most of the pricetag is the ability to integrate into the ecosystem... |

View Quote To me, 4k video on a security camera is a great way to waste hard drive space, and not much else. I seriously doubt the camera optics on most of these are anywhere near good enough to make 4k anything other than a way to needlessly generate files that are way bigger than they need to be, given the quality. But...I dunno. Kinda talking out of my ass. Call it a hunch. I think the pictures look great, and the IR is (at least to me) pretty incredible at night. The "integrated into the ecosystem" bit is kinda nice. The video is stored on the existing Gen2 CloudKey, which doubles as an NVR with a 1TB drive (which I'm pretty sure can be upgraded, if'n ya really want). Not bad for $200, as sort of a "do it all" kind of appliance. |

For those curious on night time performance of the cameras:
This is the G3 Flex on my driveway. Even though it looks like it, there are no porch or driveway lights on. That's all IR. It's dark outside, and there's rain pouring down (enough that I need to adjust the motion sensitivity, because it's generating events one after the other right now). And this is a G3 Dome (technically an indoor camera, but it's so well protected where it's at, I don't give a shit) looking at my front entry. Again, no porch light - that's just the IR. |

I'm not overly sold on the Ubiquiti integrated ecosystem. It should also be noted that Unifi Video and Unifi Protect are two different applications which only share a common hardware component in the cameras. With Unifi Protect, you cannot currently have a NVR other than the one built into the CloudKey Gen2 which also means you can't do RAIDed drive arrays nor can you handle more than about 20 cameras (which is honestly fine for the average home owner). Unifi Video allows one to bring their own NVR but doesn't get as much support...I'm honestly surprised UBNT has released two minor updates since January as they kinda had a "no further development" attitude in November. Only real complaint you ever typically hear about Unifi-Video is the inability to add non-Ubiquiti cameras to the system. Here's a Unifi-Video system I built for my in-laws so they can keep an eye on the barn (these cameras have recorded several dozen lambs being born this year) and if you note the timestamps, they were taken tonight (though I don't know why the hell one of the G3-Micro's is looking at the wall it's sitting on). https://i.imgur.com/DkzHVt2.jpg I got to check in on my switch in my parent's attic today as I added an AP (why is it I never get to go into the attic when it's not hot) for my dad's man-cave. https://i.imgur.com/pSnkMo7.jpg Fun note, Avigilon actually sells a 8K camera...with overhead it pulls a solid 50 Mbps when viewing at full resolution. This weekend I ran cat7 from the router all the way to the other corner of the house up a flight. The 2 foot thick rock walls don't allow wifi to go very far. I found out that how well you connect the wires to the jack makes all the difference. When I the connections were good I'd get over 800mbs with an internet speed test (vive la fibre). Otherwise only about 90mbs.
I had to drill through two feet of rock wall too. That was fun. |

what is the purpose of a patch panel? View Quote Something about maintaining pair twist right up to the point of termination. And horizontal cable (the run from the patch panel to the jack) is made of solid wires so it is not good to bend them and risk kinking them. Jumper cables on the other hand are made of stranded wires and are more flexible. |
