I have looked at these as well, and just buying a surplus to convert. But 58 mph unless regeared does not sound like fun.

The main problem with a big truck like that is finding somewhere to store it. I have been working on and restoring military vehicles since 2004 and have amasses quite a nice collection so far. I'm up to 6 right now. This pic doesn't include the one I just bought a month ago and us currently under restoration.

You want comfortable highway performance at 85 mph, you buy a Sprinter B rv.  You want huge amounts of room offroad & endless expensive maintenance, you accept 58 mph on the highway.

Realistically, if I would buy a surplus vehicle it would be one of these:

They're fairly affordable and spare parts are everywhere, the entire drivetrain is Volvo commercial parts.

If I felt fancy, I might even splurge for one of these:

Parts are available for these as well.

That's the 90 mm PVPJ 1110, pansarvärnspjäs.

We donated a few battalions worth of them to the Baltics in the 90's, and they've recently been spotted in Ukraine. Up to 800 mm of penetration in RHA, depending on the ammo used.

The spotting rifle used on it is a AG42 Ljungman chambered in a low-velocity 7.62x51.

After watching these two work their asses off on BRDMs, and having been a part-time Humvee mechanic on paper rather briefly, one quickly comes to the conclusion that military vehicles depend heavily on a nation-state logistics train.

Not really. Our main thing is overcoming bad maintenance.

Working a couple hours every couple (7-9 months) really ain’t much.

They are very reliable vehicles. Easy to maintain.

If I was going to buy a military surplus vehicle  it would depend on my purpose for said vehicle.

Fun/useful? M35 or an m900

Fun/party van? A grenadier would be dope.

Unusual/cool? Brdm-2.

A duece or humvee ambulance would probably be more practical but always thought a HEMTT would be cool if you had multiple skids to load on it.  You could remove the wheels and mount an RV trailer to one, another one with a cargo container and one as a flat bed to haul stuff around.

Amphibious would be cool
I remember seeing LARCs when my Dad was stationed at Lewes Beach naval station before he left the navy in the late 1960s.   It was a SOSUS station.   They just seemed huge then.   Saw one in a junkyard in TN a few years ago.  Should’ve made an offer

There's a LARC in Poulson, MT.  A tourist ride in the summer.  Hangs out in the vicinity of 61637 US-93.  They call it the "Happy Hippo".  It is large.

What kind of 4Runner do you have? I have had several 'Runners and Pickups, currently driving a '99 'Runner with 3.4 that gets 20ish mpg. And all of the others have been at least high teens for mpg.

I've got the base vehicle.

IMHO, only the A2 with the Cummins 6CTA is worth it. Easily distinguished by the CTIS (which may or may not still be installed). The earlier ones with the Cummins 14L just don't make the same power and can't be built as easily to make more. I've seen guys turbo them but it's not a small amount of work.

This is the way. I'd really like one but can't afford to spend the going rate they are for a toy. Settled for my 5 ton.

Everyone that I've seen that owns one says they drive great and you can be putting down 500+ hp with nothing more than a tune. Last I saw though, the parts situation isn't great but the engines are Cats and supported by Cat shops.

Do not bob unless you want to sacrifice the capability of a drive axle and it's going to be a pavement queen.

If you want the bobbed look, just get an LMTV.

There are armored cabs for the LMTV.  You get the best of both worlds - a clapped out government surplus truck, AND armor it's hard to get parts for!

Bobbing where you cut down the frame/body would be chill, I would not chop the wheelbase if you plan on driving over 25mph it may have directional stability issues.
