This is absolutely true. My daughter (19) has it way worse than I did at the same age. Rent (other than in a no-shit ghetto) is absolutely insane. And her income (inflation adjusted) is like half of what mine was.

When I was 20, my inflation-adjusted income was ~$56k/yr. My house (again, inflation-adjusted) was ~$146k. New construction. In California. I was broke as shit doing that (for a bit until my income went up), but I did do it. It's not even hypothetically possible for her to do what I did, right now.

To her credit, she's not letting it deter her. She'll figure it out.

This is exactly why inflation is so pernicious.  It doesn't much effect those already established on the higher end of the socioeconomic scale.    With a paid for house and cars, (or fixed rate loans), inflation could go up 300% this year and it wouldn't make a measurable difference to our life.   All we see is the value of our assets going up, up up.

Meanwhile, people just starting out, or at the lower income levels, Will feel the impact immediately.

I just got back from getting gas.  It was $3.87/gal   Kinda makes me cringe, and I have to remind myself that it doesn’t really matter.
The part that gave me a double take, is that the gas station drive through car wash is $8.89 and $10.89 .    That’s amazing, and it doesn’t even include central American dudes hand drying with shop rags, either.

This is really going to start bothering people pretty soon.

I've been refilling my propane tanks at the local TrueValue for the past couple years - $15 for 20lbs.

Today $18 for 20. That's a 20% increase. Can't say I'm surprised.

Yeah and the supply side problems haven't been realized on the market yet. We were warned by corporate a month ago to expect shortages this winter and we're one of the big dogs who buys in tens of millions of gallons. If you're getting your LP filled by a local mom and pop operation you might want to start stacking firewood.

My costs per trip have doubled. I couldn't tell you which items have gone up by what amount since I buy what I like and have never been the type to look too closely at prices or give a damn what's on sale this week. I just know what I used to average roughly at the checkout and my shopping habits haven't changed other than some substitutions demanded by availability.

Just posted this in another thread from shopping today.

Was going to pick up some peanut oil in prep for Thanksgiving because who knows what availability will be like later.

My jaw hit the floor at Costco, where I'd gotten it from the last several years for beating Sam's on price by a couple bucks.

Attachment Attached File

This is a 50% increase in price over the $32 it was last year. It was cheaper than Sam's $36.

This year Sam's is $51 and they don't even have any in stock at the two stores closest to me.

Other alternative was GFS (Gordon Food Service, restaurant supply if you don't have them nearby):

Bob Evans 1lb roll of regular sausage, I bought it 3-4 months ago.  It was 2 for $7.00. I bought it last week, it was 2 for $9.00 at the local IGA.  I'm an old guy and I need my fiber, Fiber One cereal at the nearest Kroger, $4.99 a box!!  At that price, I'll probably just start eating leaves and twigs for my fiber.

One of the few benefits of living in IL is the reasonable food prices.  Bacon at the meat counter is $5.99, oscar mayer bacon was on sale 2 weeks ago $4.99/pound and last week was 2 lb/$8.99.  Milk has been $4/ 2 gallons for a while now.

Definitely no panic buying going on by the masses but lot of the products at target grocery are sold out.  Still an ok selection, but the shelves are kinda thin in some parts.  Especially Diary for sure is picked over a bit.

I’ve seen the biggest price increases on beef tenderloin $40/lb trimmed Prime at Costco.  Was $26-28/lb last year.  A 1 pound tub of the lump crab is now $40… can’t remember what it was before but mid-$20 sounds right.

I’m guessing the higher end stuff is getting more and more price pressure than staples but good god.  Animal/Dairy/Produce also climbing up in general as those products aren’t as available for shrink flation (as it’s sold by the pound or in set package sizes.

The 5 pack of 1 pound tubes of frozen beef was $4/lb at Costco as well.

That is a good data point. My local restaurant chains are starting to pass along the expense. A couple of my favorite weekend breakfast places(sit down) are up 15% or so. Seeing weird things out of stock such as large cups at fast food chains, one night the local chicken place was out of chicken, and last Tuesday the local gas station had no gas for 24 hrs. I have not seen that since Carter. Was pretty odd in Oklahoma.
