That’s one hell of a punishment.

I’m watching 60 Days In and a participant got thrown in the hole. They brought him sticky buns and other shit that he ordered. So fucked up…

What's fucked up is the laws that put them in prison. If you cannot be free then society has no purpose for you.

I did recently hear they can't buy batteries when in the hole so they'd stock up before hand because they have to be given most of their stuff when they go. Smart thinking to buy batteries before you assault guards or inmates, and they say criminals are impulsive and don't plan ahead.

Differs by state I'm sure but commissary privileges are one of the first things stripped by disciplinary process in many states. Along with telephone, radio, etc.

Sometimes I think I would do well in solidarity confinement. As long as I had some books to read, I'd be fine. It'd be better than being around all the other criminals.

Hygiene items, writing paper, flexible pen for writing only. The also have to be placed in the hole for a while to buy from the commissary....they get to take some items from their property pack up when placed in seg...only above mentioned stuff along with some clothing

Depends on why they’re in there among other things. In MO DoC, supermax offenders can get normal commissary and even have electronics, and make honor status while still being in isolation.

Guys thrown in segregation for disciplinary reasons in lower level camps usually have a cellmate, and can get hygiene items from commissary, but they can’t get food, tobacco, etc.

There was a con on one of the prison shows who kept violating rules because he would get put in solitary and he didn't like being in genpop.

After multiple stays in solitary they told him all his violations were lengthening his prison stay.

I personally believe all jail/prison sentences should be in solitary confinement. The length of the sentence should be reduced, on average, to approximately 1/3 of what we give now. The only exception should be for murder, kidnapping and rape.

Prison is like anyplace else. I met some decent fellows who just fucked up big time. I flat out asked one dude why he was in, because he was smart, well mannered, educated, good looking. I knew his crime, he was down for kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon, but that’s not the same as knowing his story. His answer, “troutbum86, I’m a sunuvabitch when I’m on dope.”

Commissary is usually limited in SHU/SEG/Isolation....one thing worth bearing in mind....If a honey bun will shut an inmate up and make a difference between them flooding their cell or gassing an officer or anything else....I have no issue with the inmate purchasing a damn honey bun...It's not like they're supplied to the inmate free of charge

If you order commissary then go to solitary, you only get hygiene items until you’re out of solitary.

I wish they put me in solitary when I was in jail, if there was an option to be put in one without having to beat someone up I'd take it. Being stuck in a cell with 20 other inmates is one of the worst experiences of my life, hell is truly other people.

It won't be enough, we only got two books a week in jail. And I'm a fast reader and could read through Red Storm Rising in less than a day, ended up having to trade most of my food to the other inmates to get me books to read. The only thing that can keep you sane is by having a really good imagination to live out your memories in your head, I spent many many hours imagining I was still shitposting on the internet and making a list of topic thread ideas to make once I got out.

I had a Captain at one facility that I worked at who told me that convicted inmates we're already being punished for their crimes by losing some of their rights and freedoms and that they shouldn't be unduly punished any more than that. Later found out that that was bullshit too. Most convicted inmates are narcissists and sociopaths and there's just no getting around that. Substantial numbers of inmates as most know ARE the dregs of society with little interest in real and lasting rehabilitation. The way that it is.

One could guess its part of a morale booster. Decent food might prevent inmates from lashing out at staff or stupid antics.

A couple guys I know have done time in local county jail, and both said Sunday morning was the time to be there, because they got served 'cakes and flakes'. A little debbie snack and and a single box of cornflakes was enough to make for a good day apparently.

The hole is supposed to be the most secure unit in an institution, so most items you'd get in general population are restricted.  Of course it depends on the system, local, state, federal or whatever.  Some institutions take the idea that the hole shouldn't be too comfortable or it won't be a deterrent.  Others might consider it a management tool and use it as an incentive for good behavior while in the hole, to be taken away if they act up.

Not everyone goes there for getting into trouble either, which is worth mentioning if you consider how policies are written.  Sometimes someone is threatened, assaulted, or something along those lines to which they were not at fault.  Of course the opposite is true for others.  If you break rules and act stupid, you'll end up there and catch a discipline case.  Generally, the ones who can behave will get more privileges and the ones who don't will have more restrictions.  Pretty basic concept.

That being said, inmates are known to be resourceful when using basic items to get into trouble.  You can light a fire with a couple batteries, make homemade booze with certain food items, and so on.  Keep that in mind if you hear about institutions that have restrictive policies.

What you describe sounds like more of a psych ward then a regular prison with actual convicts. I've seen dudes (gang member/murder charge type stuff) spend a ton of time in solitary and they read books, call their family, listen to the radio, and do rec. And they're fine.

fuck no, it's like being in an overcrowded aquarium full of hungry fish that keep on nipping on each other. I got to see first hand how that worked, the strongest inmates would bully and wear the weakest ones slowly but surely. I was lucky I wasn't, the poor bastard that got the brunt of the bullying was in jail just because he couldn't pay child support. They'd take his food, fuck with him while sleeping and make thinly veiled threats of rape. And if you try to fight back they'd just beat the shit out of you, saw that happen with a new guy who got his jaw broken only two days after. The guys that attack you won't give a shit if they get their sentences extended for attacking you because it earns them more respect from the other bullies. Fuck that, solitary might be shitty for different reasons but at least you won't have to worry about someone attacking you anymore.

Former corrections here.

Solitary is one of the worst things that you could go through.  If you're a rapeo or murderer than fuck you.  If you fight than fuck you.

But Johnny drunk driver and little thiefs shouldn't get it, you will go crazy.

Funny thing if you are an MHU, mental health classification  you usually wind up there. So take someone who's crazy, and make them more crazy. And when they get out they're fucked in the head beyond saving.  They're back out in society and will offend real quick.

Everyone is one bad choice away from a correction facilty..  One choice.

I found that most inmates that I had any personal knowledge of were weak as individuals and ran their lives according to pack mentality and have very little moral turpitude whatsoever. In general, to trust an inmate on almost any level would be a recipe for certain disaster.

I was on lock down in county jail back in by younger days.  We didn't get commissary.  Some of the dudes on the floor would slide us shit under the door.

I don't know if words can express how much I appreciated that handful of skittles.  After a week of being locked in a little room with no contact with anybody, those few skittles were manna from heaven.  Maybe once every 5-10 years I get something I appreciate that much.

I paid that one forwards.  After I'd been in a while and got off lockdown, there was a new dude who found himself in the situation I was in earlier and I had myself a pack of starburst and slid him a few.

I am not tough enough to survive that shit. My father spent some time in jail in his young and stupid days. He told me from a young age that jail/prison is a shit hole full of predators that sucks to live in and that I should avoid doing stupid shit that would get me sent there. When I worked in corrections, they got their basic meals and that was about it other than some books and regular hygiene items...........many times when you walked by to check on them they wanted to talk and would engage in conversation. It was a way to break monotony...........but as for the commissary, you could look at items the inmates would order and it usually told you if something was about to go down. They stockpile for lockdowns

Depends on the jail/prison.  In some of them, if you have cash on you at the time of arrest, you can have that put on your books.

Some of them, outside people can put money on your books.

I've got family in state prison in FLA.  I can put money on their phone account to make calls and basically emails/text messages.  I cannot put money on their books for commissary but I can buy overpriced shit for them.  I enter my card on the website and pick out some items and on the next commissary day, they get those items.

Yep. I don't understand why we permit blatant gang activity to take place inside prisons.

The doors close, and a slot opens three times a day for bland, nutritious food. Your sentence is up, you get walked to the gates.

Why is it more complicated than that?
