Quoted: Yup, and I'd love to see you shake up our local hospitals; the problem with most buzzwordiness isn't the language, it's the disingenuous manor in which it's applied. If they actually practiced what they preached 87% of management would do pretty good, but when you tell people to do x, and then don't give them the support necessary to do so, you end up like a lot of hospitals where 20% of their staff are travelers and the rest are new grads or retired on the job. One of the local hospitals has a med surg floor that has recently been having assignments of 7pts/rn and they don't understand why they can't hire anyone and they're having falls and HAIs- but they pay 15-25%/hr less than the system 20 minutes away that doesn't have (at least serious) staffing issues. Surprise! View Quote It’s amazing, isn’t it? Or something as simple as “hey, a 6 pt assignment may be fine when they’re low-acuity patients that don’t need terribly much, but it’s hell when they’re 6 total care patients and you left the unit with 1 tech.” Because not all patients are created equal. |

Quoted: None of which you get from achieving a piece of paper. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: I've had a lifetime to study leadership and management. I've learned from each one of my bosses and the bosses I've worked with. Sometimes, it's been what to do, and sometimes it's been what not to do. Some of the most important lessons were "you don't know everything" and "everyone has something they can teach you." None of which you get from achieving a piece of paper. Nope. And realistically, this job didn’t need a bachelor’s degree/master’s in progress to do it. That’s what they wanted, but what they needed was someone with nursi by knowledge, the ability to research, and the ability to problem solve. |

My boss was shocked when I told her that I wanted to spend some of my orientation days with the housekeepers and the telemetry folks. I talk to dietary folks and physical therapists and physicians and pharmacy techs and the folks cleaning up explosive crap and the secretaries. Literally anyone that has any contact with patients or patient flow is a resource for me. The higher ups look at physicians and nurses, and their focus stops there. Mine...doesn’t. Because each one of those people has information that might be useful to me. I treat them as equals and show respect and deference and willingness to learn and listen.
And because of that, I hear things that no one else does. |

Quoted: Process improvement weasels: so what exactly do you do? Me: describes job PIW: how do you do that? Me: I talk to people and provide a sympathetic ear when they start bitching. PIW: neat! Do you think we can automate that? Me: well...I don’t really think you can. PIW: well, we want to. So we’re going to study your manual processes so we can automate that and track it. Me: good luck! What are people paying for stripped lowers nowadays? I bet those limited production ones from PSA would go for a pretty penny. I've got the abused, the gremlin, and space force ones.
