So what I gathered from this is you financed 1000$ a month to drive a black jeep for 5 months, then decided to buy a silver one?

Your loan payoff was $1100 less than the original principle, and you traded it in for $4000 less than you paid. So it cost you $5100 to drive that jeep for about 5 months.

I thought you were refering to a mo payment.

Like I said earlier, I knew I was going to eat some $$ f4om the trade. I was fine with that. Read my revised question at the bottom of the last page.

Based on the going rate for rubicons around here, you could have sold the black one private party and made back every penny you paid, if not more. You lost out on about $7k by trading instead of selling private party.

Did you get $1000 a month worth of enjoyment out of the black jeep? If yes, then you did fine.

If you didn't get $1000 a month worth of enjoyment out of it, you paid too much.

Personally, I think you paid too much. I would have either kept the black one, or had it painted.

The color and soft top wasn't cuttin it. I have a silver Jetta that hasn't been washed in almost a year and you cant tell. The hard top is quieter and more robust in my opinion.

It looks like you paid 10 grand for a paint job and hard top.

I wouldn't pay that much, but if you're happy, then that's all that matters.

No, my revised question was, did the dealership make out like bandits on the second loan?

Money lost is money lost, I'll make more, so yes $1000 a month to drive a black jeep was no skin off my back.

No, about $4,200.

The only thing that changed was I got a better interest rate and my monthly payment went up exactly $50. They started off wanting me to pay almost $150 more a month!

I knew going in I was going to eat $4-5k on the trade, that was unavoidable. My goal in the end was not to increase my mo payments more than $50, and I did that. The better question I should have put in OP was, did I prevent the dealership from making out like bandits? I don't think they did, but I want to be sure, so thats why I asked.

I don't think you did too bad.  ~$4000 more.  The hard top alone would have cost you $2200 at Quadratec.

It's your money, but man...I can't imagine financing a vehicle for 7 fuckin' years.

I'll give you this - a Rubicon is probably the best choice, if you absolutely insist on financing one that long. But still...7 fuckin' years. Yikes.

Absolutely! If all you plan on is a budget boost to fit 33s underneath, the rubicon is one of the best offroad packages out of the box. And hold their value.

7 years isn't a big deal. Its not like I'm going to take that all the way out 7yrs. The car I'm still driving I did for 6 but paid it off in a little under 5.

I can't either. I financed our Jeep Grand Cherokee for 5 years (12 years ago) and that was too long.

Plus, it's a Jeep Fiat. He's going to be pouring money into repairs on that thing long before 7 years is up.

Well, they:  a) made money on the first sale, then b) got it back for $4k less than they sold it to you, so they can c) sell it again for at least what you paid for it, while d) selling you another one at sticker.

I think they did OK on that deal.  You, not so much.

I would imagine that it could potentially damage resale value (either price or the time it takes to sell) because most prospective buyers are going to take a long hard look at a newer vehicle that has been repainted.  Especially on that type of vehicle - did the seller really hate the paint bad enough to have it redone, or was it in an off road accident that wasn't fixed with insurance money that isn't showing up on a carfax?

Not only that, but NO ONE paints a new vehicle, ever. Its not cost effective, because nothing can compete with a factory job short of stripping the new vehicle back down to frame and spraying it all. It was never even an option I considered. If you want a color change you have to trade up or down. Having a new vehicle painted is dumber than buying a new vehicle and having it painted.

The hardtop was the cheaper of the two, bout $1200 shipped, but that would be a total of nearly $6-7k minimum. Just better to trade for that money.

I cant believe this thread is still going. I'm completely happy with the new ride, the money I have lost on the trade is no big deal, its just money, I'll make more. I should have framed the question better, because what I really wanted to know was, did the dealership make out like bandits on my trade. I don't think so because I got both for less than sticker (new one 35k down to 31k, old one 33k down to 29k) and my monthly payment only went up $50. The only huge hit was the 25k they gave me for the old one.
