Who remembers this man? While I am not a Baptist myself, I can think of no one in the media I had more respect for. He was a man of virtue and honor. He never waivered from his position and was a strait shooter. Whether or not you agreed with him, he was as genuine and solid of a person as you could get. I miss him

Saw him speak at Texas A&M when I went there. I was very impressed.
|
|
I saw him preach when I was a teenager. The man was charismatic.
|
|
I always thought he was a pompous, self righteous jackass but then he talked about hating the sin and loving the sinner and I'd never heard that before. It was kind of inspiring to me.
|
|
Didn't he start Liberty College? Their debate team leads the nation. He was also the self-proclaimed head of the moral majority. Anyway, I was never a fan.
|
|
Yes, I remember him well. He was a great American who loved this country and worked hard to preserve it.

I’m probably the only forum member who’s been given a noogy (sp?) by Jerry Falwell as a youngster.
He was a good man. |

Beat.

Now you done did it, Mr. Flynt.

He died at the restaurant my wife worked at out of HS. He apparently loved Bob Evans and ordered a shit ton of really unhealthy breakfast food.
EDIT: I was wrong, he had his last meal at Bob Evans but did not die there. |
|
Met him once. My sister parked in his space on campus and he pulled up in his black Suburban on the grass and laughed kindly at her for being so embarrassed. I was impressed to be honest.

A shuckster that fleeced a lot of people out of millions
Larry Flynt and 1st amendment reigned supreme over him. |

Someone just mentioned Larry Flynt. Stick this in yer pocket:
Burt Neuborne In The People v. Larry Flynt |

I go through Lynchburg all the time. Right past Falwell Airport (W24) and Liberty University.
|

Liberty University is the ONE place I would not be afraid to send my kids.
The older I get the more correct Jerry was. |

I grew up in Lynchburg, VA and attended my sophomore year of high school at Liberty Christian Academy which is the school affiliated with his church. His son Jonathan who is the current pastor at Thomas Road Church was in the same grade as me. I met his father, Jerry Many times. He was a genuinely nice man.

And pretty much everything he was concerned about coming to our country has happened and frankly way worse than he imagined. The only issue I have with him was his philosophy that morality could be legislated and I disagreed with the political movement of the moral majority as the mission of the church. But he is with Jesus now I am convinced of it. |

Met him once or twice at a local church. Or at least I think I did. It was over 20 years ago.

The guy who said 9/11 was God's judgement on America for homosexuality?
|

His story about coon hunting was the best! And all those stores about his cousin Marcel Ledbetter were funny too.

View Quote Falwell did not take an inappropriate salary or live a high life off of any tithing from the Thomas Road church or anywhere else. What money he had he earned from sales of his books and speaking fees. Falwell was the real deal as far as integrity. For example, he was the person brought in to clean up the mess created by Jim and Tammy Baker's scam timeshare theme park. Give credit where it is due instead of spewing stereotypical bigotry. |

He was a great, ethical man. I had the opportunity to meet and briefly chat with him a dozen times back in the 1980's.
I remember he once joked about firearms and self-protection: "If you have to shoot a man who is robbing your house, and he falls out the window, drag him back in". He saw me on the road once when he was driving his black Suburban -- he recognized me/my car and jokingly drove as if he was going to bump me off the road, then laughed and waved at me through the side glass. He was a good 'normal' kind of guy, despite his celebrity. |

His University (Liberty) is HUGE in Lynchburg now, I live there and it brings in a lot of great conservative people to the area. Truly awesome to grow up there.

To those of you from Lynchburg, do you remember Myrts restaurant on Candler's Mountain Road? Jerry used to eat there some and my mother ran the register taking orders there for 20 years. She graduated high school with Jerry's wife Macel and they stayed friends until Macel's death.

I live in land of Falwell. Never met him, but he was ok. Not a Baptist so never listened to him and always got that TV evangelist vibe, but heard quite a few stories of good deeds by him, including one from my grandfather about the work he did when Jerry was first starting out, Jerry not having the money to pay him but promised he would pay when he had it, several years later, papa received a check + interest.
LU is full of dipshits though and quite honestly no matter how much of an economic impact they have, there are times I wish they would just go the fuck away. None of those students can drive worth a shit. Edit: Also Jr is the reason for the explosion of LU. I don't even think Jerry could have imagined how much the University has taken over the city. |

Over 40 years ago my aunt worked at the Lynchburg Baptist College library for almost 20 years fresh out of college. I say almost 20 because they let her go so she didn’t get any retirement benefits. Kinda soured me on Falwell senior.

I know people who worked at Liberty and they said nothing but good about the man, except for his eating habits. Said he was always giving away money to those in need.

I never knew much about the guy, but I had a favorable opinion.
LU was the only college that my son wanted to attend. He really likes it there. He was talking to a friend back home that goes to a local university here. She was saying how the local town folk will show up at their parties and they get out of hand. A kid was shot in the chest at one of the parties that she was at. She asked my son if things happened like that at LU parties. He just laughed and said "No, it's not like that here". My wife is doing an online doctorate program at LU, she likes it. |

One of his big supporters was Charles Keating. Kind of wonder about his judge of character.
