I live in land of Falwell. Never met him, but he was ok. Not a Baptist so never listened to him and always got that TV evangelist vibe, but heard quite a few stories of good deeds by him, including one from my grandfather about the work he did when Jerry was first starting out, Jerry not having the money to pay him but promised he would pay when he had it, several years later, papa received a check + interest.

LU is full of dipshits though and quite honestly no matter how much of an economic impact they have, there are times I wish they would just go the fuck away. None of those students can drive worth a shit.

Edit:
Also Jr is the reason for the explosion of LU. I don't even think Jerry could have imagined how much the University has taken over the city.

I know you live here based on that alone lol. I feel the same way.

Side note about his death, I was actually on my way to work when we got passed by a convoy of black SUV's with a police escort and we had no clue what has happening. Only later did we learn it was the Falwell's on their way to the hospital. They must have been going close to 90mph

Utter Bullshit.

Falwell did not take an inappropriate salary or live a high life off of any tithing from the Thomas Road church or anywhere else. What money he had he earned from sales of his books and speaking fees.

Falwell was the real deal as far as integrity. For example, he was the person brought in to clean up the mess created by Jim and Tammy Baker's scam timeshare theme park.

Give credit where it is due instead of spewing stereotypical bigotry.

Where have I heard "book sales and speaking fees" before?  He was a political mover & shaker, ergo he was corrupt on some level.

While there are some bad people in Lynchburg, all in all it's a pretty decent place to live. The mountains are but a 30 -45 minute drive to the Parkway and it's only 4 hours to VA Beach. My main gripe about here is that the city spends most of it's money downtown rather than to widen the roads into and around the city. All of the main roads need at least 2 more lanes added to them. In the morning and evening it's an absolute chore to get around town even when you know the alternate way there because everyone else has figured out the alternate way too.

I never knew much about the guy,  but I had a favorable opinion.

LU was the only college that my son wanted to attend.  He really likes it there. He was talking to a friend back home that goes to a local university here. She was saying how the local town folk will show up at their parties and they get out of hand. A kid was shot in the chest at one of the parties that she was at. She asked my son if things happened like that at LU parties. He just laughed and said "No, it's not like that here".

My wife is doing an online doctorate program at LU, she likes it.

Unfortunately with the way the city is laid out the main roads can never be widened. Lakeside and wards are the worst but unless the city buys a ton of buildings and homes they cant be widened. Lakeside could in some areas but it would be costly.

The other big mistake was vdot not being able to secure the land tree of life is on and connecting a roadway to wyndhurst there instead of the way it is now. That intersection is a clusterfuck.

Oh I know, lol. That intersection in front of the Harley shop gives me the creeps when I'm on my bike. I've seen too many accidents there and won't come out of the Harley shop to U turn there but go up to the light at Greenview instead.  I've been here all of my life and it's become a completely different place in the past 10 years with all of the new apartment complex's and neighborhoods. Hell, I remember when the spot where the mall is was nothing but woods and Wards road was nothing but woods where the Walmart, Sam's, Best Buy and Target is.  As soon as my wife finishes her RN degree we're moving farther out and closer to either Bedford or Roanoke. It's a lot less traffic in Bedford and closer to the Parkway, lol

I've lived in a lot of 'college towns' and I can honestly say that exact same thing about every one of them.  Most non-student residents I met agreed.

I remember when they built Liberty. My first cousin was married to an assistant baseball coach there and I lived within walking distance. We had permission to take any baseballs that we could find behind the fence. We used to bring home 5 gallon buckets full.

Its strange how many Left-Wing Christians there are in Lynchburg.  I am currently surrounded by them, or at least they are the vocal ones and the Conservatives keep their mouths shut.

Yeah but he was probably wrong. More like it was God’s judgement for abortion. Probably more to come.

You guys have a beautiful area to live in. We've visited out there a few times and have enjoyed it.

I could see where having a huge university attached to the town could be bittersweet.

I saw Jerry a few times up close and I'm sure we traded hellos one of those times during my 2 years on campus at liberty.

But the question I have for the current lynchburgers is this. Is the Texas Inn still around? I have fond memories of cheesy westerns and chili dogs from there.

I was there 1992 until 2002.  Falwell's crew finally got the building via Hobby Lobby for some low, low price.

I met JF once in the mall; shook his hand and said hello. I don't know what he was up to but he was pressing the flesh.

I ate at Myrts once or twice. And I remember when Pittman Plaza was just about new!

The one downtown is still there and they built one just off of Greenview Drive called the Texas Inn Cornerstone. That's the one we go to since it's only a couple of miles from me.

I used to work in Lynchburg and would listen to convocation on the radio if I was there on Wednesdays.   One of his last messages, about 2 weeks before he died, stuck with me.  I dont remember the entire talk, but he was speaking about how God has a plan for everyone, and until he is done with that plan, he will take care of you.  Essentially you won't die until God is done using you here.    Then 2 weeks later God finished his earthly assignment.   I think he had been asked about his age and about death and was expounding on that some.

That bit has stayed with me ever since.  My grandfather coded at the nursing home.  He had had a dnr order rescinded for a surgical procedure, and a day or two later coded.  He told the nurse in his room, "I guess I'll be going now".  She turned around and he was blue.  They shocked him a total of 6 or 7 times, and he apparently felt the last one.  He said it felt like the house fell on him.  He asked the doc if he was trying to kill him or something.  ??   He was no worse for wear than before he coded and lived a few more months.

My dad died in 2015 from a blood clot after a leg surgery.   It seems as though there was no reason the ER staff didnt mitigate it.  He was there for an hour at least after a medic brought him in with classic PE symptoms.   They never started an IV, never pushed any drugs, but had time to take a CT scan and see the clot.  ER was dead that night, so they weren't busy, etc.....  Was a shitty deal all the way around.

But I take comfort in knowing his work was done here and nothing can change that.

Christ's church was tainted almost immediatley after it was founded and on down through the centuries by people trying to add their own opinions to Christ's teachings. That's why there are so many sects and denominations. Very few adhere strictly to the Word and get it right. Christianity has suffered the same fate as the Republic we were given and the Constitution by which it was to be governed. Too many johnny-come-lately's putting their own perverted interpretations on it. Arguing with a "Christian" who believes Jesus was a socialist would be like arguing with a democrat who believes we were founded as a democracy.
