I am 60 and have lots of skills. But they are low-level ones. I can fix this and that, but then damn near any Texas wetback is younger, faster, smarter, and more skilled than I am. Every generation has had low performers. I was able to make a living in business and then once I got tired of getting in and out of cars and walking across parking lots all day, education. The latter is another story.
The modern problem is that public education has for decades now pitched college as the yellow brick road to happiness and easy prosperity and that the trades are for....I mean......losers, right? I was in public education for years and put three kids through school. The hatred of skills was stunning. But then schools have been run by the skill-less for more than a generation. Get me a bus load of admins and I bet if the thing broke down and their lives depended on fixing it, they wouldn't be able to open an access panel and if they did would be absolutely stumped for anything they saw. My son works for a non-profit in Houston that teaches trades. Their 30k square foot facility is practically surrounded by hipsterville. There are no walk-ins from that crowd. But the path to the trendy burger joint is well-worn. |

I'm a Superintendent in the commercial construction industry running 20+M dollar jobs at 25, I used to design and build boats for the military and I personally built a Rock crawler in HS and a 1200HP diesel truck in my free time....I know how to build shit. But I agree with him. |

The greatest generation was still in control of education in the 1970s when auto shop and wood shop began to disappear. People who grew up during the Depression and the War struggled. Many of them grew up on the farm with daily, grinding manual labor. YKou had to fix everything yourself because you didn't have the money. Higher education was at that time the path to a better life. They push higher education and discouraged trades because they didn't want their kids to have to work that hard. It's was a poor idea born out of god intentions. We Boobmers were raised to think that way. We had unlimited faith in our parents. When we started to graduate from college in 1966 through 1986, a college degree was a very good investment. Our nieces and nephews and even our kids looked down on manual labor. My son doesn't. He is a welder, machinist, coder, etc. I am proud of him but I want him to finish college with a ME degree. Skill and creds are still a good combination. He doesn't want to weld in the cold rain anymore. There is no reason for that anti-work attitude to continue today. |

I hate my generation for the most part. There is a small faction of us that are hard working, freedom loving Americans. I have the same student loans the rest of them have but the difference is I don't complain. I chose a degree that I could actually use and knowingly signed my student loan agreement and understood the debt I was taking on. I'm 27 and will have my loans paid off by the time I'm 30.
My brother in law on the other hand is 28 and recently decided to quit his job and go back to school. This will be his 3rd career choice and complains every day about the cost of education and student loans. He's never held a real job and has never paid taxes. He is a staunch Bernie supporter and openly socialist. |

Is there any air conditioning in the shop? Are you in a hot climate? Does the lack of qualified applicants cause labor shortages that cost you money? Would a small amount of AC on the makeup air in your shop cause productivity and profitability to increase? Those would be my questions, and yes, I know the airflow requirements of a welding shop and how cost prohibitive "room temperature" AC would be. We live in different times. It is VERY hard to find qualified workers in the skilled trades. People just don't want to work any more, all the way up to guys in their 30's and 40's. It's a "kinder, gentler" work environment even in construction where you have to be very careful not to hurt feelings. It boggles the mind. Maybe if you put even a small amount of AC in your shop it would make sense financially? It's the cost of doing business, perhaps. |

In muppets recent job hunt, it seems to me that places want degrees for jobs that should not require anything beyond ability to read.
They want a bachelors degree to be a librarian..  how much can be involved with putting Jackson books on a shelf ahead of Patterson? 
They want to pay $8 an hour and require you wear pants... im not taking any $8 an hour jobs and working with dregs of humanity... I'll stay home on my couch.
They want more for a degree that it's worth. I love history and would be good getting others to love it but I'm not paying $80k + interest on loans to make maybe $40k a year.
It's like saying "we don't want anything but the best for our kids so unless you won a Nobel Prize, fuck off"...

I can fix this and that, but then damn near any Texas wetback is younger, faster, smarter, and more skilled than I am. Every generation has had low performers. I was able to make a living in business and then once I got tired of getting in and out of cars and walking across parking lots all day, education. The latter is another story. The modern problem is that public education has for decades now pitched college as the yellow brick road to happiness and easy prosperity and that the trades are for....I mean......losers, right? I was in public education for years and put three kids through school. The hatred of skills was stunning. But then schools have been run by the skill-less for more than a generation. Get me a bus load of admins and I bet if the thing broke down and their lives depended on fixing it, they wouldn't be able to open an access panel and if they did would be absolutely stumped for anything they saw. My son works for a non-profit in Houston that teaches trades. Their 30k square foot facility is practically surrounded by hipsterville. There are no walk-ins from that crowd. But the path to the trendy burger joint is well-worn. Boom The generation that Ratzenberger's from took a GIANT shit on the Trades and is now reaping the whirlwind for it. |

WOW, why all the hate? Is it because he said the M word? Just like GD here is a guy who would actually appreciate someones ability to repair their stupid zippo, build a rifle, or custom smoker. GD has an obsession with over built, high quality goods and you hate the guy who wishes that more people knew how to create the same crap. lulz.
Anyway, he has been preaching this for quite some time and he is totally correct. And it isnt like there was something magical that happened with the first millennial was born. It has been a slow drift away from the ability to "build" and create. Unfortunately we have been training the Chinese to do it. They are mostly the suck right now, but I see that flipping in about 15 years. |
