I used to manage rental car facilities, and we sure as shit had to reconcile fuel tank usage daily. We reconciled tank level (long wooden stick in old days, and electronically, later), gas pump dispense volume on the physical pumps, and semi tanker delivery volumes. Shame on her for being a thief, and she deserves whatever legal ramifications she receives. But the gas station was obviously not complying with underground tank regulations. I'd be kind of surprised if they aren't fined.

Yeah, it's a dumb argument.
If a farmstand leaves out eggs in a cooler and an old coffee can to pay on the honor system, and you take some eggs and don't pay,
you're not "taking advantage" of a glitch in the system, you're a thief, plain and simple.

There's a gas station here that has a Rewards program where you earn $ off gas, and your account is linked to your phone number. That's also how you claim your Rewards at the pump. You can often get anywhere from $0.20 to $2.00/gal off by simply entering the phone number of a friend or family member who you think might participate in the program.  In minecraft.

This is like idiots who find extra money in their bank due to an error, and decide it's theirs to spend or "I found a credit card on a restaurant table/bar, so it's mine to use".

Using your own shopper card is like making a deposit at a bank, then trying to rob it.

lol. She bought the card from a guy (now deceased), and she was renting its use, and then she sold it.

No part of this scheme is a glitch or random.

It’s tweaker mayhem.

I love how people are like: "She found a way to make the computer say it was free. That makes it not criminal."

My dudes.
How do you feel about the people that print their own barcode stickers, and then use self-checkout?
How about the guy with the RFID reader cloning your hotel key and then looting your room?
Debit card scammers?
Identity theft?
Crypto thieves?

Over 7000 gallons of gas?  In the course of 500 separate fill-ups?  Over the course of less than 200 calendar days?  All at the same gas station?

When I was a tiny kid maybe 8, I learned the candy machine you put a dime or quarter in turn the knob one turn and out poured candy.

Hmm I said to myself. Next day I went back and it would dispense candy with every turn and no money.

I wasn't so smart. I went to the register and asked if I could get a small paper bag and the nice lady gave me the bag.

I promptly went to said malfunctioning candy machine and filled the bag. Unbeknownst to me I had caught someones attention and was later caught in my second attempt.

I think that was the first and only time I stole something.  Can't remember if I got an ass whipping for that or not.

A+ for being resourceful.

Dumb asses at the station should have figured it out when they Z’d out the register at the end of the day.

Fuel sales v gallons pumped.
View Quote

Eh...maybe.  Maintenance Mode bypasses the sales $.  And their daily fuel reconciliation (environmental tracking for possible tank  leaks, typically reported by a Veeder Root type system). might not have been off either, since the gallons would haven  been "removed" electronically trough the POS, so the gallons dispensed matches the gallons no longer in the ground.  Also, how many daily gallons are we talking about.   25 gallons...a dealer might assume  other issues, so a deeper dive into the POS reports would be necessary.   It would take time to piece this together and would likely require assistance from the Brand (Exxon, Sunoco, Shell, or whomever), who typically have Fraud managers and that's probably the  Loss Prevention manager they refer to in  the article.

Not the most brazen I've seen.  Once had a station manager in FL find an extension cord running from the back of this station.  He followed it across the street and up a telephone pole.  At the top, was $30,000 camera, focused on the station's dispensers.  The thief was skilled enough to use software and skimmer to steal debit card info, and steal a $30K camera to capture the PINs, but couldn't  figure out how to power the camera, other than  run an extension cord!?!?

Was she a trucker? That breaks down to about 260 gallons (!) per week over a period of just over 6 months, if my math is right.

Article says a friend used the card too, but only for about $700 worth.

(I drive a beat-to-shit ecconobox that only uses about 15 gallons per week.)
