So, OP will be back in a couple more years for post #3 to explain this shit?

Just get an AR10ish gun and put a 1-4 on it and call it good enough
fast enough
light enough
in the right cartridge

wtf is this real life?

1-Eye relief? Scopes aren't made to have a foot of eye relief some scopes are

2-Balance? The weight needs to be above and behind the mag-well to balance the rifle.

3-Hand-guard is a horrible spot to put a scope mount since it can flex small amounts.

4-Why? Please explain why anyone would want to do this with a scope?? for some this is faster to shoot with

not my cup of tea, but you were incorrect with some of your points....

yeah went back and reliazed it was an actual scout scope. Still stupid and anyone who thinks it is a good idea is

I don't think I'd call that an M4. Is that an 18" barrel? M4 usually denotes a 16" or 14.5" govt profile barrel with an M4/GL notch, carbine length gas system and handguards, and a collapsible stock.

The term "scout rifle" is meaningless.  It has no definition.  Notwithstanding Cooper's lofty bloviating on the subject.  He always came across as a pompous jackass to me.  There.  I said it.

Plus if you use your paracord sling for surviving and stuff, now how the eff are you supposed to do anything useful with your hands without dropping your rifle on the ground every 3 minutes?

I see something else wrong with this post every time I look at this thread.

A heavy AR with a LER scope,  a shitty sling and poor balance.

Seriously, do you understand ANYTHING about the scout concept?

I think the whole scout rifle thing is kinda pointless, but this shit is full retard.

In seriousness, though, if the "scout rifle" concept ever did make sense, it's been eclipsed long ago.  Now it's just an effort to be different.

An 18" AR-10 pattern rifle with a TA-33 and 10rd mag does everything the "scout" setup will, better.

Can the scout rifle concept evolve?

An 18" barreled AR-10 with a 1-6 or a TA-11 is a very useful rifle. Weight and bulk are an issue, but I think the concept needs to evolve as rifle technology has.

That's the biggest problem, Cooper has been dead for a long time now, and his ideas are reflections of a period of time and technology that has passed.

For those that might be interested in a rifle with a scout scope, don't. The reticles are notorious for near completely fading out from the sun behind you. Also, because of the small diopter lens and distance from eye, if any water (rain) gathers on the lens your eye can't burn through it, blocking a significant portion of the lens.

I looked it up and still don't really get it. It's lightweight, short, larger caliber, and usually a bolt action rifle with a forward mounted scope (because it's a bolt gun). Why would I choose that over a light AR type rifle (.308 or 5.56) with an Aimpoint or Eotech? Or an AK or a even a plain old lever action?

Seems like it's a made up niche gun that has no relative benefits unless you live in some commie shithole and can't have a real rifle.

Why anone is still making scout rifles in .308 instead of .338federal is beyond me. The .338federal is like the ultimate scout rifle cartridge.
