Meh, either one will work fine if you do it right...I use MOA, why? because I am lucky to get my hunting buddys to even try learning the ins and outs of the only thing they know, let alone how to deal with MIL system...As for which is more accurate, meh, pretty equal ...Last 4th of July we hauled supplies in for hunting camp and spent some time shooting...Anyway at night my drunk buddy bet me I couldn't hit a can of beer on the top of the ridge...cold bore shot at 766 yards..Use what fits your circumstances best, and what you are comfortable with...

No need to aim at all. Just walk it in. I think there is another thread out there today that explains this concept very well. I think I will get rid of all my red dots also.

It's almost like no one in this thread has ever heard of a range finder or a kestrel

1”/100yds … 1/1000….They’re both imperfect approximations.
Get good at both, it’s just math and angles/ratios. At least if you use real MOA it’s an integer based system. |

People who capitalize "mil", which is the abbreviation for "milliradian", really bring the dimma-dumb to this Dimma-Dome.

I can think in inches/feet/yards/miles since that's what I am used to. MOA/MOA is not inferior to mils, just different. If I was used to meters/kilometers then I would prefer that style system. Some reticles are better in one or the other.

Quoted: The gun number is just an approximation and doesn’t scale accurately, .3 at 300 doesn’t translate to 1.2 at 1200 and those nice round numbers are only applicable at one wind speed. What do you do when the wind goes from 5 to 8 mph? Or you miss with your 5mph wind call and have to shoot a different target at a different distance? That’s why I like the tremor, as long as you are shooting the same load the wind dots never change. Once I know the dots are 4mph I can shoot at any distance (with less than 10 mills of drop) in any wind speed, very quickly. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: What about wind specifically makes mils better? I'm of the opinion as long as the reticle matches the clicks, it doesn't really matter. You can get the speed of your gun (example of 5 MPH), and when the wind is that speed, your amount of hold is similar to the yard line... so a 5 MPH wind at 500 yards is .5 MILs... 300 yards at 5 MPH is .3 MILs... 10 MPH wind at 600 yards is 1.2 MILs The gun number is just an approximation and doesn’t scale accurately, .3 at 300 doesn’t translate to 1.2 at 1200 and those nice round numbers are only applicable at one wind speed. Once I know the dots are 4mph I can shoot at any distance (with less than 10 mills of drop) in any wind speed, very quickly. Besides that, the wind effect isn't purely linear and differs based on the projectile, MV, and other conditions. It's just an estimation. You just guess wind in multiples of 5mph and work off that assuming a linear progression. And this is the case regardless of whether you're using Mils or MOA. |

For my AR... its a 3 MPH gun out to 600 yards for my 69 gn RMR load... I can shoot further, but that doesnt happen often, and if it is happening, I can check what the wind speed bracket is at the further distances. For my rifles effective range though... its pretty damn spot on to say its a 3 MPH gun. Attached File |

I learned on mil dots. Tried mils. Mil dots were so ingrained for me to use, I just couldn't make the cross over to mils.
Height of Target in inches (divided by 36) x 1000, divided by the number of mils. Is much easier for me to do. |

MOA, mils, don’t care (prefer MOA because approx 1”/100y is pretty intuitive for me).
