It seems like every bubba out east thinks they need a 300 or 338 mag to shoot a 200lb white tail.

Im drunk

Cuss and discuss.

Eta. I started this due to a mutual friend of a friend that went shooting with us. He had just bought a 30 nosler for an upcoming Barbary sheep hunt. His 270 wsm is not enough apparently. He shot mabey 10 rounds in a 5 hour period and said he was done the recoil was to much.

NM Barbary arent that tough to kill.

While true, that is a 1/10 rant and only because you didn't insult Texans, but it's still true in Texas.

6.5 Creedmoor had opened my eyes to low recoil, medium to small calibers with great terminal performance. I don't own anything bigger than a .308.

I shoot moose every year and elk most years with a 308. They all die just as fast as when I used a 300win.

I used to think that way. But a lot of guys do....the whole "bigger is better' mentality as new and more impressive offerings have come out over the years.

It got to the point I was hunting 110lb white tails with a 300 mag.

I ended up going back to a .............  .243 and that's what I use here for deer that weigh twice as much.
Cheaper, lighter, more fun, just as good.

Does it really matter if the bullet is 308, 30-06 or 300wm?

Same hole. On a deer they're all going to go through and through.

300wm on elk just extends my range.

Although a 6.5cm light weight hunting rifle is in my to get list.

I'm probably overgunned for whitetail with my 12 ga sabot (rifled barrel) gun. I hunt Ohio (shotgun and straight wall only) but I'm pretty sure it's 50 state legal and I'd feel comfortable shooting it at anything with antlers in North America (not talking about 800 yard elk shots). I sit in the tree stand and think about building a supressed 44 mag single shot. But that's money I could spend on plane tickets and hunting tags. I just have this strange desire to do the North American Grand Slam with my shotgun.

More expensive
More noise
More recoil
Lower magazine capacity
Heavier/larger rifle
Higher risk of bullet failure at close range

Yeah, they offer a lot.

Most Bubba's couldn't use a .300 savage to it's full potential, let alone a .300 win mag.

I've owned 2 30'06's. The Remington BDL featherweight SUCKED to shoot. I'll never understand the featherweight hunting gun concept. If you can't shoot it enough during the summer because it makes your shoulder bleed, it will be useless when you're climbing mountains. If all you're doing is walking a mile or so to a tree stand, who cares how heavy the rifle is? It's a fraction of the weight of the deer you're going to pack out. Then I had a Savage 30-06. Incomplete project, never should have gotten rid of it.

Meh Bubba and his FUDD friends are mostly idiots when it comes to the actual science of terminal ballistics.

Magnums have a place and are amazing hard hitting killing machines. They are not needed to kill whitetails, they do make dropping/killing whitetails at distance in open terrain much more ethical though.

They are another tool in the tool box.

Also, 6.5 creedlapuawinchester terminal ballistics are babytown frolics compared to a fast 30 cal... and behind the shoulder shots where the deer runs 50yds and dies are not "good". Hydrostatic shock is real and it works, you also don't need a magnum to do it. That should stir the pot sufficiently

Seems to be the case around here. Everyone wants a 300 win mag minimum for their 140lb doe.

.308 is my top end for deer hunting and I consider it a good bit of overkill, .223 seems to kill them just as dead for me. This year I took 2 with .223, 1 with .308, and 1 with .45. All either dropped where they were shot, or ran no more than 30 yards.

I use a 7 mag for deer and elk simply because I don't have to account for much drop in the ranges I'm normally shooting. 100-400 yards. I have shot deer with less but can't think of a good reason to use less gun.

Except the guy 2 posts above you that shoots a 300 RUM.

You can't overkill animals. I've seen more meat damage on white tails and mule deer with a 270 Win than any of the magnums. If you can stand the recoil (and most aren't that bad) there isn't much downside to shooting a magnum.

As always I have to throw in the disclaimer that I don't shoot a magnum. I'm not here defending my choices. Just passing on what I've seen and experienced with seeing many deer taking with a wide variety of calibers.

I failed to break an elk shoulder bone at 400 yards with a 270 when I was 15, so I understand the value of magnum calibers.

If I were back in the west and hunting regularly, I'd build two bolt actions, one in 6.5 creedmoor and one in 300 win mag. They should have pretty much the same trajectory, allowing me to practice more with the 6.5. I'd use the 6.5 for white tails, mule deer and antelope, and the 300 win mag for elk, moose or bear.

ETA: I'm a really shitty hunter, but a decent shooter. I took an elk at 250 yards with a magnum muzzle loader once.

I don't hunt big came, just because of the hassle.  If I did I would use a 223 with a good heavy bullet.

Shot placement is key and while the hole may be smaller than a 308, it will penetrate just as far. If I couldn't get a good shot then I wouldn't take it.  Some Hunters tend to get a little overconfident because they bought the Magnum whatever to take their game. Magnum does not compensate for lack of accuracy or shot placement.
