They don't call it a health care mandatory surcharge, they put a bow on that pig and call it a health and wellness charge, who could be against that? Then we have the "It's only 3%" angle with them boiling the frog slowly. Most people don't give a shit about 3%, any complaints get met with "then don't go out to eat." Why should the businesses stand up and fight these mandates when they can just score some quick virtue signalling points by playing it off as something positive instead of calling it what it is? It's a shitty tactic from a consumer standpoint, it's a devious tactic from a political standpoint. The fact that so many happily swallow and can't see the downside it is the evidence of mass ignorance. |

As much as they are doing it to virtue signal, I think a large part of it is so that they can have 'lower' menu prices as compared to the competition.
Most people will have it in their head that the place is less expensive than other places that offer equivalent fare. |

There are some restaurants in Seattle who add a 3% 'living wage' surcharge onto your bill.
They claim its due to having to pay their servers $15 an hour min wage ( and of course they get tips on top of that - so you figure $25-40an hour to wait tables ) Its a fucking scam and a few places I now avoid its not posted anywhere in the establishment so the customer has no notice they are gonna get shafted. And WA sales tax is near 10% for those who do not know. So 10% sales tax 3% living wage fee and then they want their 20% tip on top of that. Then factor in there is near zero free parking anywhere downtown Seattle And they wander why I have not eaten at a downtown Seattle restaurant in close to 3 yrs
