This thread isn't for you if you're a boomer who thinks country music peaked when the singers looked like this:
Attached File When I say modern, I mean people making music now, touring now, and releasing new music still. I have found modern country that I like better than pretty much anything made in the past. I will post some examples, and welcome others to share some of their favorites. One of my favorites: Tyler Childers Tyler Childers - Nose On The Grindstone | OurVinyl Sessions The Turnpike Troubadours: The Bird Hunters Diamonds & Gasoline Trampled by Turtles Trampled by Turtles - Wait So Long Ain't No Use in Tryin' |
|
Thread needs some ladies:
Sarah Jarosz - Run Away Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan - Crossing Muddy Waters Long Time Traveller Waterbound (feat. Ruth Moody) |
|
Some might call this 'not country,' but how much more country can you get than a woman playing a fretless banjo that she built herself?
Rhiannon Giddens - I'm On My Way (Official Video) |
|
I don't like country music that gets radio play. Whiskey Meyers, turnpike troubadour, Ryan Bingham, Chris knight, steel drivers are all regulars on my play list. I liked Luke combs until he became nashvillized.

Taylor swift is more country than these instagram friendly goobers

Nathaniel Rateliff - And It's Still Alright - On The Farm Sessions @pickathon 2022 Quoted: modern country music is gay pop music. View Quote Tell me you didn't listen to any of the songs without telling me... |

I found a few by accident, but once I found a Pandora channel that played this stuff, I found even more of it. I haven't listened to a "country" radio station in decades. |

Way better than Rap/Gay/Pop country music. Here's another one Original 16 Brewery Sessions - Colter Wall - "The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie" |

Most, if not all, of those artists are folk, bluegrass, or Americana genre, they wouldn't be classed as country.
And Childers is liberal trash, same with Sturgill. Try Flatland Calvary, Brent Cobb, and Charley Crockett. Crockett is especially good for an old-time country sound in a young artist. ETA: Here's Crockett at the Ryman Charley Crockett - "Welcome To Hard Times" (Live From the Ryman) |

All country sounds like shit to me, but I love a good contrarian thread.

Modern Country music is CRAP
Country that sounds like RAP. Every singer sounds the same |

This song often hits me in a very soft spot. Super convicting for me.

You could not be more wrong. You could try, but you would not be successful.

Two of those are new to me. This is something I hoped to get from this thread (that and winding up the boomers still listening to LPs and yelling at clouds). |

"Well, yeah I mean, I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have.
I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the shittier stuff gets. But that’s the way it always is, isn’t it?" - Tom Petty |

Quoted: OP. I think you like Americana music. Not country music. View Quote Much of it is labelled that on various things, but what's the difference? How is people playing acoustic string instruments and singing about rough, blue-collar, rural living not country? I think it's the essence of country, and is more authentic than the lame shit that is on country radio. Homos like Alan Jackson and Clint Black with contrived accents and costumes from the western-wear store perform "real" country, but the Steeldrivers and Turnpike Troubadours don't? |

OP is all hat no cattle type of cowboy.
New country sucks.....old country is where it's at. And get off my lawn!! |

I’m 30 and this is lol
I liked Tyler Childers until he literally made trans and blm liberal loving statements. Backstreet Boys for “country” folk. |

What about this?

I don't really pay attention to the political leanings of musicians for the most part.
What did Sturgill Simpson do to brand him a leftist? Of course that term is used quite loosely here, similar to fascist on DU I would imagine. |

I think Jason Isbell could fall into modern country music.

Dwight and the Bakersfield sound is my high water mark. YMMV

Cody Jinks, Aaron Lewis, Colter Wall, and Whiskey Myers are the only "new" artists I've heard lately that are worth a shit.
If I hear auto tuned vocals and dance beats, I turn it off. That ain't country. |
