I lived in a food desert. 5% rich people, 95% poor.
We had an expensive, high end specialty store, and a low rent sleezy off brand grocery store. Borrowing a car to go to a Safeway 15 miles away was a treat. We would load up like it was Costco (before there were warehouse grocery stores.) Trying to grocery shop via public transportation was a nightmare. Walking home 8 city blocks carrying 4 bags was a challenge. |

Link In addition to being the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart likely takes in the most food stamp dollars—an estimated 18 percent last year, according to leaked comments from a company vice president at a private dinner last fall, which Walmart later confirmed. That sum would amount to $13 billion, or about 4 percent of Walmart’s total U.S. sales. This is big business here people, never gonna happen. View Quote |

Yeah, there is an underground black market in EBT. As I understand it, and I could be wrong, people get their EBT card recharged by Uncle Sugar every month. They go to some shady store in the hood where they get maybe $50 cash in return for $100 EBT credit. They then take that $40 and buy beer, cigarettes and a $10 bag of pot. Not no mo'. Here's your box of groceries, see ya next month. Maybe the dope dealer on the corner will accept a package of pasta and a can of chicken meat as acceptable payment, but I doubt it. How would they jump fences running from the cops with a ruck sack full of spaghetti- o's and Trix? View Quote And they probably sale it for more than 50 cent on the dollar. No tax on EBT purchase either. They get amount of $ from some one they know, give them the card and pin and that person then goes and spend whatever the agree amount is, also they get points toward fuel at Krogers off EBT purchases also |

Am I missing something? Sounds like they still would be able to get the good stuff, steak, chicken, fish. There should audits done on it. Honestly it's 2018. No real reason a query can't be done on the system to see what is being bought. You spend all your money on junk food. You're cut off. If you're young and fit you should have to do some type of community service. It doesn't have to be picking up trash either. It could be tending the gates at a local HS football game or something and the school admin signs off on it. |

I see a business opportunity. The same companies that now benefit can continue to do so, but on a wholesale level. The boxes need to be manufactured and delivered to a packing facility. They then need to be filled and distributed. To be a recipient, one must fill X number of boxes per week/month/quarter. All of this activity needs to be managed. Contracts would need to be let and the work organized. It could be a win for everybody involved except the taxpayers that are robbed in order to fund this legalized crime. Put the welfare recipients in charge of distributing welfare to welfare recipients. What on earth could go wrong??? [crazy] |

Is powdered milk still a thing? View Quote To the original post: I like the idea in theory as ebt type programs get abused. However, the cost savings may not be there as you are now having to pay for the food purchased from the source, the logistics costs of transporting and distributing massive amounts of bulk product, warehousing, etc. Not saying it can’t be done, just would be interested to see more details on the plan. |

They used to do something similar around here. They called it "Commodities". You'd go pick up a box of flour, beans, etc.
I don't really have a problem with it. Alternately, restrict EBT to a specified list of commodities. Anything above that, you pay cash for. |

When I was a tot, in the late 70's. Dad just got out of The Navy, and went to work pouring concrete.
He hurt his back badly, ( nearly 70 today, he's half in a wheelchair because of it) I briefly remember blocks of .gov cheese, powdered milk, ect. I ate it and was thankful, we didn't eat steak or takeout. My brother and sister weren't born till 6 and 7 years later as we couldn't afford it. shortly after he got well enough to work, drove a truck, and then started a trucking company working 16 hr days but made a fortune and repaid that cost of .gov cheese via taxes 87,000x over. THAT's how it's supposed to work. not raising 3rd generations of dependent kids on it. The "system" needs an overhaul. |

Yep, the entitlement state is a train wreck and is in need of sweeping reform, but...it's not always about the recipients miraculously finding a job. There are help wanted signs in damn near every store in this part of WNC. They're almost all service jobs, and they pay about the same thing...roughly $8 to $11 an hour. Try raising two or three kids, keeping a roof over your head and a car running on $21K a year.
