Heh there is an entire merchant class being sustained by EBT alone.
Pull it! |

If they would just make and enforce laws on what can be bought with EBT, this would not be necessary.
In MA it is legal to use EBT to get your nails done at a salon, buy alcohol, and buy cigarettes. |

This qoute from the article tells you all you need to know about the current system :
"Shares of Dollar Tree Inc. and Dollar General Corp. both dropped on Monday after the plan was unveiled." Why do dollar stores and gas stations accept ebt? They don't sell real food, just junk food. Also, this won't replace the ebt, just reduce it. Plus there are still welfare payments, section 8, WIC, and medicaid. This nations poor will not starve or freeze. They can get winter jackets from Church donations or buy them cheap at Goodwill. This is a needed step towards systemic reform. Maybe we just get a restriction on what ebt can be used for. However, ftito lay, Dollar general, coca cola, and 7-11 will fight this tooth and nail. |

This is why we must win a super majority in congress. Ideas like this become remote possibilities.

That was weird, "quote" put up an entirely unrelated post (which I deleted in this edit).
Just to be clear, I wasn't being critical of the proposal - it has a huge amount of merit. Not a fan at all of the, "I got mine, fuck the FSA" direction this thread immediately defaulted to. I don't believe it's going to be possible to engineer the fraud, waste and abuse out of a federal social safety net. Can we rely on the individual states to justly administer their own programs? I have no idea. My point was, I do know I'll tolerate some degree of criminality in the program before I see honest poor people and their kids suffer to ensure 100% of the abuse is stopped. |

We open up food kitchens and they have to go there to receive their balanced diet of 3 meals a day.
EBT will only have a small amount on it for "fun things". The Dems should love it because it gives them more control over their slaves. |

Quoted: Yep, the entitlement state is a train wreck and is in need of sweeping reform, but...it's not always about the recipients miraculously finding a job. There are help wanted signs in damn near every store in this part of WNC. They're almost all service jobs, and they pay about the same thing...roughly $8 to $11 an hour. Try raising two or three kids, keeping a roof over your head and a car running on $21K a year. People get by, but the bad teeth, tattered clothing and dirty kids in a country this hugely wealthy is hard to take. There's a lot of honest-to-God gut wrenching poverty in these mountains, and I see people in the local groceries buying food and staples in line with the programs intent almost every day. Cutting off the very small amount of discretionary money these people are given strikes me as extraordinarily mean-spirited. Boxes of food don't buy costly winter jackets to put on children's backs. They don't make expensive repairs to beat-to-shit cars, or fix the heat and patch the roof in tumble-down trailers. The people on this thread advocating shaming people, making kids grow up with the stigma of poverty, and punishing the estimated 85% of the homeless suffering from mental illness so they'll "get a job" need to seriously think about what, "There but for the grace of God go I" means. View Quote And, how the fuck does a soul enter heaven through the Grace of God if you fucking tax everything he might give? "Jesus says you should help the poor, give me all your fucking money so I can do that!" [Points gun] You haven't seen how the numbers work out when people are taxed less and how it relates to actual, real helping the poor. People don't give if they know the government is going to. |

The welfare portion of food stamps goes way beyond the poor. A huge component of it is supporting domestic agriculture/food production. If you read the original legislation, strengthening the agricultural economy was one of the express purposes. View Quote Not fuckin' likely. More like helping ADM, Tyson, Con-Agra, and their ilk. The little farmers are gonna he a pittance, if anything. |

Any comments from the left yet? They oughta be creative. View Quote "Trump is cutting benefits for the poor while giving tax breaks to the rich" Now that I think about it, the tax break for the rich line works with the EBT crowd because they have no paycheck to compare to last years. Is it actually cheaper? I had a food box delivery service for a while and dumped it because for the price it was cheaper to go to the store and buy it myself. If we're talking about making the program cheaper, adding packaging and delivery cost to the program doesn't make it cheaper. View Quote |

The comments on this are nuts. "Trump is telling poor people what they can eat", Only Trump's rich friends will get the contracts for the boxes", "What about people with dietary restriction?"

View Quote Not a single dollar should be transferred from the .gov to the .state. The states have their own taxing systems & they should be free to spend as much or as little as they want on all these issues. All the people who love these handouts can move to the blue states & all the people who don't want to pay for these handouts can move to the red states - the system would fix itself & then everybody can be happy. |

This is kind of a stupid idea. There are better places to save money or generate jobs by far than something like this. But whatever, I always love how many of the "Muh freedom!!!" guys on here want to decide what food people eat lol Does that mean I get a vote on small arms acquisition just cause I pay taxes towards them too? M27s for all branches just to piss off joglee!!!! View Quote If they are asking for a handout, then they can eat what is given to them. It's not a hard concept. Being shiftless, poor and lazy should be embarrassing and difficult. Spare me the cries of "what about old people!" How did old people survive before EBT? That's right, their children would help support them in their old age - it's full circle. You take care of your children growing up and your children take care of you on your way out the door. The extended family living together was the default nature of humans for thousands of years. Grandparents helping raise grandchildren and contributing to the family income whatever way they can, in return for living with the kids in an large, combined house or in neighboring houses in their golden years. If you do such a shitty job of raising your kids that they abandon you in your old age, well, that's too bad. You know, true freedom is just doing nothing about these people at all. If they choose not to work and cannot afford food, then they starve. Each person is free to make that decision. Personal responsibility and all that. |

The system could be totally restructured and the recipients would still find a way to beat it.

Looks like a credit card SNAP = Food stamps..... now electronically deposited onto the card each month WIC= Women, Infants, Children... special welfare/foodstamps for the aforementioned group... also loaded onto the same EBT card Welfare= cash payments..... also loaded onto the same card. Recipients may qualify for 1,2, or all 3 benefits and the system keeps them separate. EBT Foodstamps will only buy food. Cash payments will buy almost anything except alcohol and tobacco.
