Movies, as entertaining as they may be, can in no way measure up to a good, well written, book.

Books and movies are completely different things, and they engage the mind in completely different ways.

Absolutely. But, I do find it interesting when movies capture some of the magic of a book. Most fall woefully short.

Gotta disagree for the sole fact that we didn't get to see rocket launchers taking out dinosaurs.

I second this, and as a big Kipling fan.  Also, with the news of privatizing the war in Afghanistan it may be particularly precient.

Both Jurassic Park the book and the movie were awesome, though for different reasons. I thought the book was better because the movie makes some pretty substantial changes from the book. The movie was revolutionary for the time for its special effects.

The Lost World movie is a gigantic steaming pile of crap trying desperately to recapture all the intense moments that made Jurassic Park Great. Pretty much the main similarities between the book and the movie are that they both take place on an island and have dinosaurs.

Harry Potter movies did a pretty good job. Not perfect but good enough.

Especially based on the year each was made, I can see the reason they left some things out.

Faithful to the book overall.  The one simple change made in the movie vastly improves it from the source material.

The Razors Edge

The 1984 film version of the book by  W. Somerset Maugham, starring...yes...Bill Murray!

I read the book in High School and it really influenced my life. When the movie came out two years later, I was amazed by how Bill Murray (who had only played comedic roles prior) nailed the character of Larry Darrell. In my mind's eye the book was written for Bill Murray's performance.

One of my favorite lines of dialog;

Gray: You and Isabel are my greatest friends in all the World.

Larry: Well Gray, old sport, that's just a tough break.

Of course vast amounts of the book were not included in the movie but if you read the book, the movie with Bill Murray is a great companion to the story.

from the book;

"American women expect to find in their husbands a perfection that English women only hope to find in their butlers.”

Dances with Wolves followed the book very closely.  The book was short so it lent itself well to a movie.

I was not of a fan of Tolkiens writing style.  Not a fan of George RR Martins either.  Game of thrones show is much better than the convoluted back and forth pedo rape fest that is his books.

The Princess Bride.  I have watched that movie countless times, a cult classic.  I was barely able to grind my way through the book.  The movie really built positively on the book.

One of these days someone will use modern CGI and special effect to bring JRR Tolkien's works to the big screen.  I am sort of surprise some has not done it yet...

Not even close.  JP is an awesome film, it holds up to this day, but the book was waaaaaaaayyyyy better.

LOTR was phenomenal, the film was in my opinion, far better than the book, which was clumsily written and a chore to get through.

Lonesome Dove and Shogun are almost perfect.

What part of Sonny's giant dong and Lucy Manzini's loose gaping vag didnt you enjoy?

Likewise for Jaws, did the book's description of the mafia angle and Ellen Brody/Matt Hopper highly charged sexual affair not entertain you?
I thought the whole thing about the ob/gy doctor fixing her problem in the book was interesting and should have been included.........In the book of Jaws Hooper gets eaten, in the movie not so much. Hell I'd have cheered if Dreyfus got eaten, he was beyond obnoxious.
I think in the book Ellen Brody got eaten too.
Don't remember that from the book, but, it would have made the movie a bit more interesting than jus the usual suspense.............
