Even Chuck Palahniuk thought the movie was better.

Uh no. I couldn't watch the LOTR movies because they just can't capture the magic in the books.

The Razors Edge

The 1984 film version of the book by  W. Somerset Maugham, starring...yes...Bill Murray!

I read the book in High School and it really influenced my life. When the movie came out two years later, I was amazed by how Bill Murray (who had only played comedic roles prior) nailed the character of Larry Darrell. In my mind's eye the book was written for Bill Murray's performance.

One of my favorite lines of dialog;

Gray: You and Isabel are my greatest friends in all the World.

Larry: Well Gray, old sport, that's just a tough break.

Of course vast amounts of the book were not included in the movie but if you read the book, the movie with Bill Murray is a great companion to the story.

from the book;

"American women expect to find in their husbands a perfection that English women only hope to find in their butlers.”

That sounds really good. I'm going to have to check that out.

Never read the book. One of those movies that can be watched countless times. Arthur Murray, Van Johnson. Was there a second key to the ice cream locker ?

They created that world, horrifying as it might be.

Yeah, the book was like "that's pretty cool."

The movie is mind-blowing.  To this day I can go back and watch it and catch things I never saw before.

Protip:  Tyler Durden is not a protagonist and the "moral" of the story (such as it is) probably isn't thst we should blow up a credit card company.

Eh, beyond the very broad outlines of "replicants" and a dystopian world of people owning synthetic animals and living in huge, otherwise abandoned buildings, they don't really have much in common.

Definitely. Cutting out all of the chapters dealing with the magazine, that no one gave a shit about, really helped the story move along.

They didn't leave out much, and what little they did...I didn't feel like I really missed it. It REALLY closely followed the book - down to the dialog. You almost never see that.

...has anyone read Das Boot? I own the movie (Original Uncut), but I've never read the book. Kinda wonder if one is better than the other.

In vocational school English class, teach knew she wouldn't get us to read that shit.

So, she arranged for the movie to be shown. We had a pretty nice theater in the school.

I had no idea what it was about. I forget how much into the movie it was before I realized it was what you said, I stood up and said, "I ain't watchin this shit. Gonna go sign out.

If you were 18, you could sign yourself out of school.

Most of the rest of the guys who were old enough followed me.

I agree.  The ending of the novella was a little disappointing; the movie's ending was better, mostly because it broke your heart.

Both Jurassic Park the book and the movie were awesome, though for different reasons. I thought the book was better because the movie makes some pretty substantial changes from the book. The movie was revolutionary for the time for its special effects.

The Lost World movie is a gigantic steaming pile of crap trying desperately to recapture all the intense moments that made Jurassic Park Great. Pretty much the main similarities between the book and the movie are that they both take place on an island and have dinosaurs.
Except the scene where the rex's push the trailers off the cliff was pretty much perfectly done.
True! That was a pretty intense scene. Too bad the rest of the movie is pretty much unwatchable.

I have a soft spot for starship troopers. Even if it's not actually based on the source material and stole the names is about all.. that said the sequels all suck.

Master & commander someone else mentioned too. Damn I love that movie. The books, with the exception of a few of the later ones, are amazing also.

LoTR were pretty damn good. Hobbit was complete shit.

Dune movie is ok. Dune book is fantastic. Dune book sequels are a steaming pile of manure.

Nope, try the eragon series...

The movie SHIT on the books after beating them to death with a rotting carcass...

Then they made a Xbox game from the movie, which vomited all over THE MOVIE after putting it through a blender.

John D. McDonald's Darker Than Amber was made into a really decent movie of the same name. It's only fault was that Rod Taylor did not quite fit the physical parameters of McDonald's Travis McGee.

I'm talking about the fictional character not the former poster here.
