That makes two of us.  The movie was as good as it could be, given that movies have to change so many things.  I guess it came out a bit late, most of the Burroughs fans having died off.  It is amusing to see a young person's reaction to reading Tarzan, after being indoctrinated for so many years by Hollywood.

Two Costner flicks I really liked that were total bombs at the box office . . .

The Postman
Waterworld

Also . . . a couple of Geena Davis flicks

Cutthroat Island
The Long Kiss Goodnight

1941

So many set-ups, one-liners cameos and sight gags. Unfortunately Belushi was not funny but his part was small.

Borderline “flop” (I think it basically broke even), but I still firmly believe Zodiac is one of the top 10 films made so far in this century.

I wouldn’t say it flopped, since it did make more money than its budget, but it didn’t do great. It also came out at the same time as American Beauty, and was compared unfavorably to it. In hindsight I think most people would agree that American Beauty is an inferior film in every way.

It’s a lot like Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line in that regard. SPR seemed to not stand the test of time.

Idiocracy was also a mediocre/poor showing box office wise. They seemed to have a rough time marketing Mike Judge films back in the day.

Boondock Saints. It's release got slashed because shortly before it was to be released the Columbine shooting happened. The studio didnt want to release a film about two guys in black coats shooting a bunch of people after that, so they released it in 5 theaters initially and it only grossed $30k. Home video sales ended up being like $50 million due mostly to word of mouth, but in regards to budget vs theatrical sales, it flopped hard. One of my favorite movies.
