I don't need to provide a reason for taking PTO that is a formal part of my compensation.

The company owes me PTO, not "PTO for approved activities".

My cat and I read this together... My cat is smarter than many people I've met. Though that doesn't say much, I've met some STUPID MF'ers...https://cdn.thisiswhyimbroke.com/thumb/how-to-talk-to-your-cat-about-gun-safety_400x333.jpg

You damn right it is. ALL house cats are.
Smarter than shit. They get humans to clean up their shit , feed  them, give them on demand affection/belly rubs, medical care, toys, roof over their heads with heating and cooling, etc.  All cause these aloof useless assholes have soft fur.
They aren't just smart, they have evolved into downright genius status. OR, "we" are sofa king wetarded.
Man, sucker for all kinds of pussy.

His co workers are less than thrilled with his recent attendance issue as the guy chose a few days last week to call off when two other guys in the department were already off.

Found another one!!
You sir must be one hell of a problem solver if your only option is leaving a dog on the floor to rot if not given a whole day off to deal with it.
You could always call mommy to help.
LOL! Not giving a problem employee a day off to fuck with a dead cat is now equated to " severe mental illness".
FFS we are doomed and FUBARed.
Such drama!!

There's a difference between a break up, and a dead animal in your house. I'm not leaving a dog corpse on my floor to rot all day because my boss wouldn't give me a day to at least do something about it. That's some sick shit, and a genuine symptom of severe mental illness.

Problem solver here: a cat died in the middle of winter, ground was frozen solid. Options: pay for cremation, no. out with the garbage, no. bag/tag and put in the freezer til spring, yes. "Hey everybody, don't mess with that black bag in the freezer." Problem solved and the kitteh got a decent burial come springtime.

Try and keep up. We already Said fridge or freezer.
On ice in a cooler would work too. Trash cans aren't cold enough unless it is winter in the colder climate areas.

Fucking that's why people don't want to work for you... JFC, give the guy a sick day. Move on.

This literally just happened to one of my employees. He called off, it was fine. We moved on in life. No big fucking deal.

This.  Deal with attendance issue when he gets back, and don't bring the damn car into it.

When my cat died, my boss was chill with me taking the day off. Dude's pet died, give him a break.

If this post was about a boomer and his dog everyone would have a different opinion.

Dude? was already on thin ice with the attendance.  Nice try with the boomer bullshit.

I’m 66% of that problem, and if I had an employee who had a close pet die I’d absolute have no problem giving them a few days to handle their shit and get to a better place.

Imagine working for a place that doesn’t give a shit about you or events happening in your life.

He said that, broadly speaking, a dead animal is no different than a break up. That's far beyond the individual circumstances described by the OP. That is a Jeffery Dahmer mentality.

This is an interesting topic. About 9 years ago, I had the "opportunity" to work as a consultant in oyher Shops outside of my market.

The PTO structure was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw.

Shop Owners acted like vacation requests were a personal insult.
No one actually knew where they stood with regard to PTO

Employees requested leave for utter nonsense( haircut, kids haircut, leave .5 hour early for an at-home online training course that started at 8:30)

Dog-bereavment

Cat-bereavment

I finally lost it on the entire Company.

I have never before or since, cut loose on a group like that day...I was a slobbering maniac about PTO, amongst other things I saw.

Upon finishing my tirade...4 Employees thanked me.
The OWNERS, said I was too harsh.
WTF.

They were STILL upset about the OWED VACATIONS, and not all the obviously fake BULLSHIT Pet-related/death realted/ etc Leave that they were approving.

That Shop went out of business about 29months later.

If you have good attendance, it doesn't matter why you call in.  If you have poor attendance, it doesn't matter what excuse you use.

Last I looked I think I had around 2 or 3 months worth of vacation and sick leave stacked up.  If I call in, the boss knows I have a reason.  I don't even bother explaining the reason, and he doesn't ask.

I personally think its a bad business decision and employee morale decision to allow people to accrue months of PTO.

It's not normal to sit back and never take PTO or accrue months' worth.

I'd at least want to know why and push for a limited amount of rollover each year.

Small business? A lot of them are run like shit and have no idea how to handle HR so its just 'owners discretion' and they don't really know the laws or state/fed regs around that type of stuff. A state labor board would love to sniff around a company where PTO is part of the compensation but being systematically denied based on what someone deems to be acceptable use or not. Reasonable staffing levels are a reason to deny PTO based on a standard like seniority. Denying PTO because you don't like the reason is not really acceptable.

This country/workforce/whatever is soon going to crash and burn in a loud catastrophic manner. Our society will not have the fortitude and toughness to make it through it.
