ATC "Secondary Radar" which is their spinny antenna setup is pretty much junk from the 80s still left around and operational but doesn't even provide as much information as weather radar, it's back at 2nd generation Radar of the Vietnam war era. Once ADSB cooperative radar was initiated they don't even bother looking at their actual radar unless a pilot reports something, and even then they either won't see it or it is hidden in clutter. It barely detects airliners reliably, it won't be showing any balloons unless they're designed to return a strong radar signal with a corner reflector or transponder installed on platform. Problem with weather radar is it's designed to see water in air to get wind speeds and precipitation at all altitudes so isn't so good at airspace control. |

My local terminal controller under 10,000ft, points out primary targets to commercial arrival traffic all the time. "10 o clock 2 miles, type & altitude unknown primary only" Southwest: "were looking but negative contact"

I also bet that expedited opening up the filters. |
