I don't believe we are in a simulation.  However, a simulation sort of "box" makes quantum mechanics sort of make sense, but eventually the analogy falls apart.  It's just a way to think about the weirdness that happens down at the very, very tiny (atoms) and very, very large (galaxies) and how what we think we know falls apart.  The units around the size of man, for a factor of a million either way, seem to fit human sized beings naturally, we're in the middle range of the sizes of things.   Faith, which is how the simulation theory was brought up, can also be looked at as a simulation analogy for things like creation and miracles.  

When we don't know, we jump to try to explain it by trying to shoehorn it into what we do know.  That was how science was up until Einstein, then things went fast, and we're now bogged down again into thinking we know everything, the way some scientists thought with the discovery of electricity.  

There are many things we just do not know and cannot explain.   Some can be used to argue against simulation while others can be used for it.   It's just an analogy for how to put it in terms you, yourself, understands.   If you want to think about something, learn what you can, and analogies are of great help in that, as long as you can figure out where the analogy is stretched too thin and falls apart.  It will at least help you understand that little bit you wanted to know more about.

Humans are extremely arrogant these days with "Science is Settled" crap.    As soon as they found a way to identify and map the Ozone layer, they noticed a thin spot, and immediately said it was man made and all refrigerants must be banned.  After a decade, it was realized that there's a 7 year cycle to the size of the ozone hole and it hasn't appreciably changed though we now use a lot more power to stay cool than we did with better refrigerants.   DDT was banned based on junk science about thinning eggshells in a one off not repeated experiment but over a book that was all a set up.  Reason - DOW needed to make new chemicals for profit in both cases and artificial fear hysteria was rung up.   As far as Coming Ice Age! Global Warming Climate Change, it's just like the Ozone hole.  As soon as there was a global network for measuring temperatures, they saw that it varied year to year and assumed it must be man made.  Then when it was cooler, that was also man made.  They don't care about he climate record, CO2 is a pollutant and must be banned!    You're the carbon that needs to be eliminated.

The arrogance and majority's blind belief in popular science is how we're being guided down the cattle chute with most Americans not giving a damn as long as their favorite TV show is on and their favorite political head says something they like or somebody says something bad about something they don't like.  All is well, no more fears, no wars, it's all imaginary and we're the top of the heap.   Arrogant Delusions.
